I am not ready to quit TV Tropes yet

  • @AHR: Ooh, tell me, how did Axis Powers Hetalia handle the siege of Leningrad? Did Germany make mean faces at Russia? Was the Anschluss represented by a facefault?

@Vorpy: You could always make a rough draft of a page, and have someone else check it for you. A lot of my early pages were filled with spoilers, but I got out of that habit eventually.

  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Maybe the failure of the Stresa Front was represented by a wacky big-brother trio of misunderstandings.
  • --checks--

I do not think APH covered that.

Ivy: APH's wikipedia entry doesn't really mention anything negative about the series in terms of white-washing history. Does that make wikipedia full of creepy fuckers in a site that's rapidly turning into a pit?

I don't really understand the sudden insistence from people that TVTropes is a terrible site if they're not allowed to say how bad certain works are in the wiki. Especially since you actually can say how bad works are in the wiki, just not in the main page.

    Kichigai birthday!!
Encyclopedia Dramatica's article on Hetalia is great, even if it's just because of this line

There is no mention of Jews or the Holocaust in Hetalia. This
is because it is a history show, and everybody knows the Holocaust
    didn't happen.
  • @Meeble: Does the Wikipedia page say that watching the show is a good way to learn history?
  • The main historical events portrayed in this work occur between World War I and World War II. The series often uses satire and comedy to address well-known historical events as well as historical and cultural trivia.
  • edited 2011-08-03 17:22:01
Well, in addition to what AHR said, one of the reviews listed also mentions that some jokes will go over your head if you don't have a PHD in history.

If that's your main sticking point, you can easily edit that line out you know.
  • ...But it doesn't address well-known historical events and aarrrgh

    Yes it does?

The one that comes to mind is apparently one time the US tried to paint a mountain red. Also it depicts the Revolutionary War in flashback. Also, other nations fighting over Italy.

And then there was the time Machiavelli was mentioned by Italy, in theme to what Meeble mentioned.

I haven't really seen much of it though.
  • You could also write a sternly worded review, and add some entries in the YMMV tab if you're worried that our article is overall too positive.
  • Yeah, about that sternly worded review...

    > Everyone has sore spots. WWII people don't get special treatment.

    > The entire point is that all the characters are sterotypes. If you want
politically correct, watch the news, not a comedy show based on being
not politically correct. It's the entire basis of the show. Also, if
there was no world war going on, there would be no conflict. Unless you
want more slash as emotional conflict. WWII was included because it's
rather recent, but still old enough to not be a fresh wound, and because
it included pretty much the entire world, meaning more characters would
be included. Why are you even attempting to make a review if you don't
like anime? I actually wonder if you've seen more than a handful of
episodes. As it stands, I seriously doubt you have

    > If you don't enjoy anime, then why bother trying to watch it or even
looking it up? It clearly states that Hetalia's genre is anime not
cartoon or live-action. You should have generalized it as an anime and
have ignored it. If you didn't know that it was an anime—which I doubt
that—you've might known from the synopsis that it satirizes WWII and
WWII has a great impact on yourself, you should have left it alone.
Hetalia is not for everyone and you would have known this if you read
    the synopsis.

    > The thing is it's not about WAR, okay? It's about the characters
themselves and how they interact with one another. Sure, there's war,
but the main focus is on the characters.

    > As a history buff myself, I honestly enjoy this series. Actually, I
honestly enjoy its fandom- the good side of it, that is. Where else can
you find heartwrenching, romantic, dark, and historically accurate fics
about, say, the Seven Year's War?
Oh, and one last thing: If you don't like anime, why on earth did you watch this series?!

    > As my account was banned (I don't know why) I'll shall provide something of a rebuttal to Lightningings

...wait, the writer of the review got banned? For what? Writing a negative review of a show that a lot of people on the site love?
  • tl;dr Hetalia's translated name would be Axis Powers Sh Italy and I hate it (the series, I love the name). Also, the art is pretty sucky.

    That might be why.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    >states that Hetalia's genre is anime

    ಠ_ಠ

    Just...just...argh.

Looking at the guy's profile, he had a tendency to get really pissed about things he didn't like, so it doesn't surprise me that he's banned.
  • ...BAHAHAHAHAH Hadn't even noticed that XD
  • @AHR: ...That's a bannable offense, in a review?
  • Kichigai birthday!!
So apparently Urotsukidoji and Doraemon are from the same genre.

    Who knew

Well, I was more of referring to how it doesn't come across as a review. It comes across as a pot shot. When one makes a negative review, you need to explain your points calmly, without resorting to names.

But then again, I'm big on common courtesy, so it could just be me.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Again, looking at the guy's profile page, it's not a stretch that he did something bannable somewhere.
  • ...that's probably a more likely event.

    nvm
  • You can change. You can.
    Yeah, reviews should be more...professional?

I don't know the right word.
  • So, TVTropes is bad because it allows people to disagree with negative review of works? There's a ton of comments there, some that agree and some not.

I'm not certain he was banned for that review, considering the review was posted some 4 months prior to the comment in which he says he was banned (and mentions that he's not sure why.)

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    ^^Thoughtful? Level-headed?

Yeah, Boku no Pico can go pretty deep.

  • @GLORIOUSLeader: It doesn't say that, I don't think--

    > It has a number of things going for it, such as quality animation and
opening theme songs, and has a number of big names involved, such as
Yoshiten, the character designer for Bible Black, and

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Professional is perfect. We don't mind negative reviews but youtube comment style stuff is not acceptable.

The Hetalia one isn't that, but it's a pretty shitty review anyway.

    ^Oh what.

When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
^^ I know that. I'm just using it to say that I refuse to defend a site where a hefty portion of the userbase likes child porn, and another large chunk prevents people from saying anything bad about it.
  • You can change. You can.
As it is, I do think that the wiki should be objective and state the facts and let the reader draw his/her own conclusions. My other problems with the site are still not being fixed any time soon.

Such as lovely Troper Tales, and how reviews don't have more quality control.
