I am not ready to quit TV Tropes yet

Does that explain why there's so much anime when compared to 70's shows and movies?
  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy
That is a bit of a pain in the arse, true. Does every single fanfic need a page of its own with character sheets and all?

I don't think the policy is that bad. I mean, I dunno, I know a lot of people have issues with fanfiction getting trope pages, or fanworks, or things they deemed to be ideologically offensive or...well, useless, but it's better than if we made things notable, because sooner or later, people would start complaining about that too...

But the thing is, it's up to a person to make them. If you want articles on stuff like shows from the 70s, nobody is going to do it but you.

Some people take fanfic too seriously.

  • Electric Boogaloo
The thing is, it takes about a sentence and a half to explain adequately explain "Baka". We don't need an entire page for it (thank God it's an example-less article). If anything, we should just add a line about it in the Japanese Fanspeak page.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
I wouldn't say the policy itself is inherently problematic so much as a large portion of the wiki using to justify making articles about obscure anime, fanworks, etc. at the expense of more famous works that should get more than they do. Showing an obvious bias to people outside the site.

    ^That too.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
No Such Thing As Notability applies to works. The problem is when people apply it to other pages.

Do you guys want to help me launch a SeventiesAcidTransition trope?
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington

Vorpy, that sounds awesome! What movies have examples of this?

  • Woki mit deim Popo.
Yeah, but I doubt anyone of you have a living memory of the 70's.  I do.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
^You got me there. I just go back to the 80s.
  • So every time a page for an obscure anime is made, it becomes impossible to make one more page for a famous book?
  • Juan: I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I just usually like to have a better reason for something's removal aside from individuals not liking it.

Before you give up on me as a hopeless weeaboo, I'm all for changing stuff that actually does impede the sites mission. My Special Project on Stock Japanese Characters is a prime example, where we are removing tropes that were incorrectly being listed as "Anime Character Types", which was causing Fan Myopia and strangling the non-Anime example listings of those tropes.

Fanspeak terms simply don't really hurt anything, however, so I don't see much reason to be rid of them.

    You can change. You can.
Who says you need to have been there in 70s to experience and understand a work from said decade?

^I don't think you're a hopeless weeaboo, man. I just can't argue further than that. I know it's silly and I know it might be dumb that my reasoning here is simply "Why is a word given so much importance?"...but that's how I feel, and if it doesn't work, that's fine. That's why I don't bring it to the board, I don't have any arguments to back it up and I'm fine with that. I'd be happy to see it gone, but I can live if it doesn't.

Neo: If you have a problem with older works not being listed or entry pimped enough, you know the simple solution for that, right?

You say "at the expense of" as though the person who just entry-pimped My Immortal would be editing the hell out of The Great Gatsby if we didn't have that policy.

Cygan: In reference to the Fighteer quote you posted earlier here, he has since revised his position on the subject of Useful Notes.

@Juan: It's all good, man. I wouldn't be offended or anything if you did bring it up for removal on the wiki proper, I would simply argue against it there the same way I did here. And if you got consensus to remove it, I wouldn't have a problem with that, because it's a consensus-driven site.
  • You can change. You can.
    Also...

It's because I have first hand experience of living in it? I remember the bell bottoms, the variety shows, and the Star Wars Holiday Special.  I also remember that time seem to be far less cynical back then too.

I have to keep in mind between me and most other people here, there's a generation gap.  Of course I'm going to see things differently from people from a different generation.
  • You can change. You can.
Then, well, I think English has a lovely acronym for you...DIY, I think?

But yeah, if you can do it and you want the wiki to have it, what's stopping you?
  • Woki mit deim Popo.
The thing is I tend to work better with others that are interested in a same work.  If it's something like obscure like Misfits of Science, I'll work on it up to a certain point.  That's when I just can't think of anything to add.  If another person adds to that, I tend to remember some of the other stuff I forgot before.  Since that show is pretty obscure, that page won't get a lot edits.

Streets of Fire on the other hand is a little more well known and I able to recall tropes that went there since there more people interested in that and added and refined the list of tropes.
  • edited 2011-08-04 12:52:59
You don't have to add every trope used by a work. In fact, my M.O. when it comes to work pages is: Add a couple paragraph description, 5 relevant trope examples, put it on the appropriate indexes, and let Wiki Magic take it from there.

I'm happiest when I never have to touch a work page again after launching it because other editors are picking up on it.

New policy: The next time I see someone here complaining about Wiki Groaning, I'm going to start stalking their edit history to ensure that they're putting their money where their mouths are. =P

Nice plan but I'm not sure of know what my handle is at TvT.
  • You'd be surprised. In fact, you'd really be surprised at the fact that I'm watching you at your computer right now.

(Seriously though, that comment wasn't directed at you specifically. I've just seen several tropers complain about Wiki Groaning while doing next-to-nothing to address the issue.)

I know Thenamelesssamurai. Swell guy. Great guitar player.

    Dunno the other one, though.

    It's because we're lazy. :(

And because I'm a bad editor who doesn't remember most of the works I'd like to see in the wiki because they happened forever ago to me.
  • WHY ARE THEY IN MY IP ADDRESSES?
  • You can change. You can.
Probably he's your brother and you don't know it.
  • Hah, all my IP addresses are belong to me. :D
