How all the interesting discussions get locked...

edited 2011-07-18 17:11:25 in General
You can change. You can.
no, I don't think the lockings in question were unjustified, but I think that many a thread locked here provided with an interesting topic of discussion, but we always lose them.

Guys, come on, can't you be more civil? At least, smarter?

The first hint of drama and everything gets locked now.

Honestly...  I'd say the conundrum is that though it seriously reduces the potential for fun..... it.... also.... kinda works. Y'know?
I suspect folks taking things too seriously plays a part though. Folks oughtn't to do that.

Serious Business is bad for folks.

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I agree that recent thread was a useful cultural exchange.

Perhaps they should be given cooldown periods and a the offending posts thumped so they can be restarted later without (hopefully) any drama?
  • You can change. You can.
The problem is that there shouldn't be hints of drama. There shouldn't be drama. why can't you guys just...discuss without going at each other's throats?

p.s. I bet twenty quid this one'll be locked soon too.

[Edit]: It isn't drama though. It is "the first hint of potential drama" ....... or to put it another way, the first suggestion of a hint of a notion that someone, somewhere, might take what is being said as Serious Business.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    ^^^I'll try that.

    ^^Agreed.
  • Maybe the mods would be better handing out warnings when a thread threatens to veer out of control.

After all, a full discussion got closed due to the inane postings of a select few, which is bothersome to say the least.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, here's the thing. At the time I decided to lock, the thread had 39 posts, and the last 8 were what got it locked. That's more than 20% of the thread.
  • Besides... when drama breaks out....

... well honestly, it is just funny.

How could it be anything else? A special kind of bittersweet humour.

  • You can change. You can.
Exactly. Locking seems a bit like an overkill. I understand it from INUH's POV, as most of the discussions were really heading for bad places, but still, it's a bit of a non-solution, because normally a lock leaves the implication that discussing the topic is wrong/will lead to a shitstorm/etc etc.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
In a bit, I'll delete that portion of the thread and unlock. Let it cool down first, though.

^^ Yeah, that sort of thing bugged me on TV Tropes. Although that's mostly because the mods followed through on those implications.

When drama breaks out, half the time it's kinda annoying and not really funny at all, especially if it came the hell out of nowhere in a serious thread.

    You'll delete my posts?   ;_;

    But... but... I wasn't attacking
anyone. I was just declaring my observations with casual disregard
for.... well, anything a drunk person would casually disregard!

*Breaks down in tears... stops for a moment and looks up to see if being watched.... then if so, gets back to fa- ... crying.*

especially if it came the hell out of nowhere in a serious thread.

...  -_-;  ... Folks shouldn't make Serious threads. This is the Internet.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^
That attitude isn't the best, as many people can have serious discussions on the internet.

^ They shouldn't though.  It isn't good for them to get serious.
Getting serious inevitably leads to getting butthurt.

I mean ... heck, don't we know this already?
I still remember trying to teach my mother when she was a n00b and wanted to use the Internet to talk to other Poultrémon Trainers...  (she eventually met an american one and married him) ...  And she used to keep getting butthurt about things that other people on the Poultrémon forums said. It took me SO long to explain to her that the Internet is NOT for Serious Business... She went totally flame-rage and almost ended up in tears after someone criticised her Leghorns.
I mean really... she is so naive it scares me sometimes.
She is just lucky that the only people who care about Poultrémon are generally too lame to be serious threats.

I've pretty given up at this point with arguing the whole "people can be serious on the internet" thing, so whatever

    EDIT: ^ This

    EDIT: v, vv Those too
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Whilst people need to maybe step back and not take certain things too seriously.
That is different from being able to converse in a serious manner.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
It's easy to be an asshole when all you say in response is "LOL PEOPLE TAKING THINGS SERIOUS" though.
  • Radd... I don't do drama, unless it relates to S*ny. We all know this by now, surely?

    Rule of thumb:
I'm always sincere, but never serious.
That means that while I mean what I say, any perceived intensity can be pretty much divided by several thousand, as my actual intensity is usually close to zero. I'm typically just sitting in front of my keyboard, giggling to myself, drunk.... unless I'm being miserable, in which case I'm just miserable and it doesn't actually have anything to do with anything anyone said, because I'm off in my own little deluded Nihilist fantasy of everyone being dead.

Honestly, just take note of this:

Most of what I write, I write under the assumption that I'm just talking to imaginary voices in my head because I'm bored out of my fucking mind and reality is horrible. This is why I love the Internet. I'm pretty sure none of this really happens.

  • Gonna leave this here to prove you wrong Soti.

    ... But it doesn't.
So you're not doing a very good job.

Heck, and here I thought you were going to dig up something OLD and actually surprise me.
I mean heck, I can maintain at least a semblance of consistency within a 24 hour period. What do you take me for? Someone who can't.

    How ruuuude.

*Picks nose and flicks it ... somewhere*
  • @Soti:

You sure justifying your style of posting in a serious manner like that is wise?

    RE-ANIMATOR
    "In a serious manner"?

    .... You've lost me.
My seriousness variable only sets to "true" if S*ny is involved, pretty much.
Almost every other situation has it set to "false".

There is no "manner" to it one way or another.

I spent the first decade of my online life roleplaying.  "Manner" doesn't mean a damned thing. You either trust my word on it or you don't.  The way I type doesn't change depending on the seriousness variable, at least so far as I'm aware.
You'd have to speak to someone who has known me online longer to be sure... like my ex-wife.

... I wasn't aware there was any "manner" to my posts anyhow.
Rest assured though, my expression going into such threads is the same as my expression coming out of them.

[Edit]: That does remind me... a lot of people throughout my internet time have reacted strangely to my casual swearing here and there. I occasionally notice this pattern, but usually dismiss it later. But I always got this impression when I put the word "fucking" in for faux-emphasis (usually with a smirk, and otherwise deadpan), that people assumed rage or something.  Was always funny. Stupid people. They really suck at reading into text. Poor idiots and their lack of audio / visual cues. ^_^
  • If you want something old then your Temp Ban will work.
  • I'm not sure how the temp ban I got was supposed to prove anything... besides that someone, somewhere got wound up as a result of something I said or did...... which, essentially, is true of my entire life so far as I can tell.
Heck, I don't even remember any more.

  • ^ It says that you were being a dick, and that you should really start remedying that. If you don't mind offending people, that's fine, but I hope that you also don't mind being kicked out of the forums you frequent when you do it.

Soti, it seems you suffer from a case of hypocrisy.

I suggest a check-up from your local doctor. or perhaps psychologist to help clear that up.

Unfortunately baiting people into getting pissed off is also against the rules, and it's one of the many things I am no longer allowed to do either.

I say fuck and shit and cunt and fat all of the time, but people should know it's just because I programmed the "| \" key to type "fuck" instead of "| \", so it would be fucking easier to type fuck.
  • Maybe the mods would be better handing out warnings when a thread threatens to veer out of control.

This. Y'know, then maybe people would be less prone to doing things to get certain threads locked.

Also, maybe more bannings? Just a thought.
