Quest 64 was lol. Though I did like it anyway, despite it being more or less crap.

Gauntlet: Legends was fun though, and one of my favorite N64 games from when I was a kid.

It had a lot of good things going for it that I wish other games would have picked up on, but ultimately devolved into "pump earth, spam magic barrier, be immune to 95% of everything in the game, staff everything to death."

With enough tedious grinding I'm sure you could.

The thing is, the defining trait of that game's combat system was being able to dodge attacks. The problem was, your defense didn't scale unless you were taking hits. So you got punished for playing smart when suddenly the last quarter of the game and the four or so bosses in it were bland endurance matches against stupidly powerful unavoidable attacks.

Earth happens to give you a game-breaking payoff before that happens. And gives you Avalanche, which was about the only spell you'd ever need again.
