As for the word, it's from the same root as "Wallachia", "Wales", and "Wallonia", which is to say, proto-Germanic *walhaz. Meaning "foreigner" or something like that, as in someone who didn't speak a Germanic tongue. Obviously enough it's apparently a borrowing. For much the same reason, you've got Slovaks near Hungary, Slovenes near Austria and Italy, and a bunch of similarly named tribes on the edges of the settlement range elsewhere. You don't need to differentiate between "us" and "not us" when everyone around you is some flavor of "us".

I think it's been pointed out, specifically in response to that post about Alexander the Great, that he actually was gay or bi, making the complaint quite ironic.

Though I guess that irony is probably why the complaint achieved meme status.

The joke is basically that a common complaint is that woke adaptations turn everybody gay but in this case it was historically accurate and the Prime Defender of Tradition and Chadness did not know that.

In fact later in the thread he complains that the claims of homosexual activity were 'unsubstantiated' without citing any sources and without acknowledging that homosexual activity at the time and especially in warfaring types was pretty common.
