  • I was told that in FSTDT as well, actually.

My boyfriend has also been saying that a lot recently...

In my opinion, I would rather leave peacefully in a few years with my boyfriend and then cut all ties without much of a fuss, since that would be less...traumatic...for everyone involved. Not to mention the whole "Throw him in a nursing home!" style of revenge, albeit, I have a hard time believing I'd go through with it.
  • That...was a bit of a derail...I apologize for that. Talking about my father makes me rant-y. Should probably make a different thread in Meatspace for that...

    Back on topic!

Health class, out of all of them (second to maybe Biology/Science, in some cases, due to wrongness) is the worst.

It is a Bible class under the guise of a Health class, with little tidbits of information on your body thrown in to ensure that they can't get sued. (if they could get sued in the first place, that is.) I should not have to recite a Bible verse in High School Health. Nor should I have to come up with an answer as to how it is my Christianly duty to keep my body healthy.

(Also, I apologize if I'm necro-ing this, meant to post last night but never got the chance due to storms.)

Hmm, this isn't Pensacola Christian College / A Beka Books.

    > Math is just incredibly inept in its execution, especially when it comes to Algebra and Geometry.  Example: A question may be answered with either a mixed number or improper fraction. The computer will only want the improper fraction.  The school does not warn you of this in any way.

This just sounds like the interface was designed very shittily.

    > I am actually taught that dinosaurs walked with man, and that Noah carried them on his Ark.
    > Wouldn't it make more sense to claim that Noah didn't carry them?

    This.  So totally this.
  • Glenn, if you wish to view the lessons themselves, I posted a pair of megaupload links in the first page.

It's a lot more inept than it seems...

That pic in the OP reminded me of this.

Oh, abuse of reductionism is another famous stupidity.  Occam's Razor is frequently used as a primary piece of support--"it makes more sense this way!".
  • Forgive me, but I can't really tell what you mean by that...
  • Did Anonym just link to LessWrong?
  • ~♥YES♥~! I *AM* a ~♥cupcake♥~! ^_^
Yes, Anonym just linked to LessWrong.
  • I will say that I have a very hard time understanding what "reductionism" is, and trying to figure it out from that article is hurting my mind slightly.

I'm going to ask, am I right in thinking that my school...isn't...exactly...good?
  • Here is the wikipedia page for reductionism. It might be easier to understand. Don't worry too much reductionism is more college level than highschool. You are right in thinking that your school is not that good.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Actually, it seems like my use of "reductionism" was not really correct.

What I meant was that simply favoring explanations that are simpler, without regard to whether they are accurate.

And yes, you are correct in observing that your homeschool program is...lacking.
  • Dude, first of all I just want to say that any and all ranting about parents is perfectly justified and if you ever feel the need to do it, I am here to listen.

Second: Your parents are horrible, horrible people. They are abusive, dangerous people who should never have been allowed to raise a child. As soon as you can possibly get out of there, do so. Disown them and never look back. Your life will be much better off for it. Don't let yourself get trapped into thinking you owe them anything or that you have any kind of responsibility towards them. You are being far, far too lenient on people who ought to be in jail for child abuse.

Third: I'd like to reiterate my earlier promise that if you ever need someone to talk to I'll listen. No child ever deserves to be put through what you have.
  • Thank you, both to Delta and to Fargle.

I'm not really sure how to respond to Fargle, it's extremely difficult for me to be sure what to say to things like that. I suppose that all I really can say is that you don't really have to worry about me getting trapped into thinking that I owe them (that...got crushed a few months ago...it's a long story) and that I do plan on leaving here as soon as my boyfriend has the resources to allow me to do so.

Chances are, I'll elaborate more on my father and the rest of my family situation in a later thread, since...this one is supposed to be about my homeschool and poking fun at just how inept it is.

    Once again, thank you.
  • You're welcome.

I'm glad you're preparing to get out because I'm not really sure what other advice I can give besides "Run, run far, run fast and never look back."

Maybe right a book exposing, ridiculing and just generally tearing apart everything about your "school"?
  • That's actually one of the reasons other than the entertainment value of it's idiocy that I've been posting it. I don't really think I have any other method of exposing it at the moment.

Not to mention, getting a good laugh out of it makes it worth SOMETHING.
  • You are welcome and don't worry about keeping things on topic. Derails happen here and are kind of expected. I am quite happy that you realize that your education is crap, you are not buying into the fundie bs, and can laught at it.
  • Write it all up, be very detailed and thorough and then post it everywhere you possibly can. Anywhere that it can possibly have an impact. Blogs, political debate forums, Child Services etc etc etc. Get yourself noticed and, if you can, find a news agency that's sympathetic to your cause. Send it to newspapers or the people who made the documentary "Jesus Camp" as an expose. Don't stop until you've kicked up enough controversy and bad press about this school in question that they're forced to close.

  • Thank you, Delta. I'm actually the only one out of my entire family that has realized how stupid this is. This is including my little sister, who attends this school as well and *does* buy into it.

    She's funny, if cruel.
  • Ah, ninja'd by Fargle.

I've been doing my best, albeit, I have to do this whilst also ensuring that neither the school nor my parents know that I'm doing it, which is...difficult.
  • As soon as you turn 18 and have enough of an income to support yourself that can cease to be a concern.

Clarifcation, what control the school has on your personal life, beyond homework.
  • What do you mean by that, Delta?
    I meant exposing the school.
  • @Delta: I have no idea what you were trying to say there. Please clarify your wording.
  • That all I need to know. I just wanted to know what control the school has on your personal life.
  • Surprisingly little, on it's own.

The real issue as far as control over my personal life is my father...

    He keeps coming up...
  • I'm not really sure on the specifics of American law but you do realise the stuff you've told us (Particularly about the medication) is potential grounds for a criminal case don't you?
  • I believe so, according to some of the things I heard on the FSTDT thread about my father.

I will say that my medication *has* been refilled since that incident, but he's done a lot of other stupid things since then.
  • On a lighter note, does anyone have any highlights from the curriculum thus far that they'd like to share? Any moments that really made you go "What the hell is this I'm reading?!"?

This is partially for entertainment purposes, after all.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I am partially inclined to post selections from my own A Beka Book textbooks, which were used in my middle-school homeschooling many years ago.

Thankfully, I went to a public high school.
