I'm gonna suggest if any of you have spare $10 dollars (or however much is the exchange), Steam and a love of strategy games to get Fate of the World.

    "The planet is in crisis.

    Your mission: Save the Earth.

It won't be easy. As head of the Global Environmental Organization, you'll be pitted against strengthening natural disasters, dwindling food and energy resources, tense international situations...and an ever-growing population that will not accept failure. Armed with the newly granted powers of the GEO and your team of loyal agents, you must navigate the challenges of the next two centuries by any means you decide. Prevention and response, social change, clandestine operations, technological breakthroughs, alternative power, space navigation...all are at your disposal."

Although it does have a steep learning curve.
(I went to the forums looking for further info and found a troll denying climate change, hence the reason for this thread.)

Do you know why these things have to be anvillicious?

    Because of things like this.

Granted, it's not the most unbiased source, but it's based in fact.

    ^^
Some anvils need to be dropped (especially carbon neutral anvils).
Also it is based on scientific modelling from a professor at Oxford university
Also you can be a complete dick in it, you can develop bio weapons (effective population control!) and spread fossil fuel usage. etc etc

If you do buy it go read there wikia as it is very in depth and explains a lot of stuff in extra detail that is helpful.
  • "To the radical greens, it's a day for humanity to engage in self-abasement, bow before the altar of Gaia and apologize for the offense against nature of simply being alive. It's a day to conjure fears, preach limits and condemn the capitalist system that created a country wealthy enough to indulge these shiftless hippies in the first place."

Not seeing how this isn't true.

Anvils need to be dropped because people are lazy fucks.  Most harmful broken equipment can be properly repaired or scrapped by professionals, but people tend to just dump them in a landfill and buy a replacement instead.  There are recycling bins and shit all over the place around here, but most of the can/bottle recycling rate seems to be tied to the local homeless population trying to get booze money.

Conversely, a lot of anvils need to be dropped on the hippies who jump on ideological bandwagons without doing their research as well, see (edit: kneejerk opposition to) nuclear power.

Wait, are you praising or condemning nuclear power?

I'm generally in favor of nuclear power (apologies for the ambiguity), but more importantly I'm condemning hippies right now :P

Alright. I thought you were one of those people condemning nuclear power because of its "danger." Yeah, those people get on my nerves as well. For example, spurred on solely by the collapse of the reactor at Fukishima, the German government decided to phase out all use of nuclear power by 2022. And for that, they are dumbasses.

^ Please stop strawmanning. I never insinuated you were such. All I said was that considering this to be true:

"To the radical greens, it's a day for humanity to engage in self-abasement, bow before the altar of Gaia and apologize for the offense against nature of simply being alive. It's a day to conjure fears, preach limits and condemn the capitalist system that created a country wealthy enough to indulge these shiftless hippies in the first place."

is stupid, since it is also strawmanning. And lying.

^^ Exactly the nuclear plants at Fukushima  did pretty well considering the cornercutting in building and how old they were, they stood up very well to stuff they weren't properly meant to defend against.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Not to mention the fact that Germany isn't getting many tsunamis anytime soon.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
^ And the nuclear plants that would be built would be a newer generation which would be even safer and more efficient.

Live here for a few years, Leader.  You will get very, very bitter about hippies shouting kneejerks about things they haven't put much thought or research into.

Granted, a lot of the old "real" hippies are actually pretty cool.

Oregon? The state composed solely of pot, hippies, canoes, and hippies riding canoes made out of pot? No thanks.

Though on the bright side, if they try to smoke the canoe, they'll drown.
  • Don't forget the meth.
  • Holy fucking shit that Media Matters place is a giant cesspit of communist liberals.

The actual site is very good but the commentators are fucking insane

Way to dodge the question. By pointing out something I already pointed out.

    'kay, I'll ask again:
The fuck does being a communist have to do with the environment?
  • "This has got to be really scary stuff for people who believe it is the natural right of wealthy individuals and corporations to exploit the natural resources of the entire world without regard to national borders. The idea that the long-term interests of each individual country should override the individual's right to make money by stripping its natural resources in single-minded pursuit of profit has got to be anathema to them.

It would be sort of like claiming that say, the right of the people of West Virginia to breathe clean air and drink water that doesn't burst into flame outweighs the rights of mining companies to rip off the tops of mountains and pump cr*p into the earth in pursuit of profits."

    Textbook anti-capitalism.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
So, you support the rights of corporations over the rights of people? Good to know.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Yes, but your original statement:
Leader: Yes, you must headdesk because I am -gasp!- not a Radical Communist Left-Wing Liberal! How dare I not be one!
was directed not at the site that's a quote from, but at the other people in the thread, who haven't said anything like that.

    [tɕagɛn]
Leader: Except that the entire comment is the same "CORPORATIONS ARE EVIL AND HORRIBLE AND EAT BABIES AND KILL KITTENS" fearmongering and rhetoric that communists love so much.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Okay, then. Why don't the people of West Virginia deserve the right to have their health prioritized over the profits of corporations?
  • They do.

But the entire comment is basically saying that corporations are Always Chaotic Evil and want to kill/fuck up their customers (Which makes no sense Economically whatsoever) For Teh Evulz.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yes, that particular comment is stupid. But nevertheless, some corporations (and even more people, really) could do a better job of being environmentally friendly.
