If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    • As I don't care about anime that much, my question is...how the fuck do I know those two?
    • and I think Nanoha was there.\

      Question answered~
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    > Betty Boop
    > Magister Negi Magi
    > Hmm, something is different about these pictures, but WHAT?!

    The era.

Also, could someone send us mods a report of how formatting-breaking happened on the first page, before it got fixed?

Also, I don't see why people should complain about animesque western art, but that's because I don't mind the animesque style myself in general.  That said, it is true that animé is derived from western animation, though the two have diverged quite significantly.

Also, I don't recognize any of those animé series in that big picture except for Shana.

Um...isn't she the girl in the far left with the 2005 year tag? Or am I mistaken?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Far right, second from bottom.

    ...far left?

You mean the middle 2005 pic?

Shana is in the right 2005 pic, and the one in the middle is Kozue (well, one of her alternate personalities) from Mahoraba.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Is the top-left one Madoka?

    I don't recognize anything recent.

2007 center panel is one of the Key Three I think (Kanon/Air/Clannad).  2004 entry looks familiar...Baccano?
  • You can change. You can.
Eh, they are all the same. Whatever.
  • Top left is Dog Days, which is like the opposite of Madoka with the exception of one character.
  • I don't recognize much in the way of recent stuff either.
  • You can change. You can.
2009, far left looks like Gretel...not sure, though.
  • Wait Gretal from Black Lagoon?

Left 2009 is Liselotte Werckmeister from 11eyes.

Tiger and Bunny is in the top-right?

How did I not recognize that?  I watch that show.
  • Did you see the most recent episode?
  • edited 2011-05-25 00:43:42
No, which I guess would be why I didn't recognize it.

Still I probably should have been able to tell...
  • That's Origami Cyclone without his suit on.
  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
I don't mind animesque art in western animation, as long as its not Teen Titans.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    I like Teen Titans.
  • What's wrong with Teen Titans using animesque art? (not that I actually watched it before, but still)
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
hating things that are popular doesnt make you cool you know
  • ☭Unstoppable Sex Goddess☭
It conveyed too much wackiness in a slightly serious mood with the OMGSUPERBIG faces and the chibi battle scenes or drama/yelling scenes.
  • ^^But, if you're a troper / IJBMer, it's your job to hate things that are popular. Didn't you know that?
  • You can change. You can.
I liked TT. That said, I prefer the comics.
  • TT was pretty awesome.
  • You can change. You can.
I actually didn't like how they dealt with the Terra arc, for starters...
  • I loved Teen Titans, it was my favourite show before Avatar came into existence.

Exactly. It was like a monkey just imitated what he saw without understanding how or why things worked or in what context certain devices were used. To put it another way: it was like he was designing a car, and he understood that cars have engines but nobody told him where they go, so he wound up putting them on the roof.

The show was otherwise bearable, but it would've been helped by a more serious (or at least more consistent) artstyle.

Not all animé influences are just "big eyes" actually. A lot of stuff comes down to more subtle things. Physical dynamics (as in, what the camera is shooting) the use of speedlines, how much is shown in a shot, the use of distinctive silhouettes, stuff like that.
