  • @fourteenwings Magica Wars might be relevant with how there's lots of magical girls in the country but they never team up and with how powers work they kind of can't.
  • There is love everywhere, I already know
I guess that's one way to do it, but it's really far removed from the sort of smaller cast dealing with normal magical girl stuff thing.

Crazy idea: a magical girl who gets her powers from degaussing CRTs.
  • isn't that just the witch from PMMM episode 4

It occurred to me that whatever DEEN was hoping to achieve with THE REFLECTION (classic super hero story but anime) is what I'm expecting Infini-T Force to achieve next cour.

So I actually went and watched the first episode of Haganai and I'm not actually sure what I watched. Like if I were to rate this right now it'd be something like "5i".

It appears to be a comedy-of-errors (by which I mean a comedy wherein the characters make stupid decisions and the humor comes from that) about friendship, or rather, about attempting to make friends and doing it badly. But I'm not even sure it's that.

    > discussion about Neo Aquarium and King of Crustaceans, both aquatic dogfight games

Someone should make an aquatic dogfight game featuring Arpeggio of Blue Steel characters and/or setting.

The second episode of Haganai uses "Monster Hunting" as the bland-name-product version of Monster Hunter.

Except right after the mid-episode commercial break, one of the characters says "not a piece of crap like Monster Hunter".

    lol

oh gosh they translated (and voiced!) a (fake) dating sim for this
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
oh gosh they're actually using the dating sim to smack the idiotic characters in the face with basic social skills like learning to apologize for being rude

i'm actually honestly curious to watch more just to see what kind of strangeness this train ends up to

like, how much more bizarre can it get

anyway so basically the dub is practically deadpan compared to the bizarreness of the plot events and in a way this is actually kinda unexpectedly entertaining

ITT: GMH reacts to basically the most un-GMH series ever

well actually it's dubbed so it's not all that un-GMH

in episode three they level up to reading outright smut, out loud

in as much of a matter-of-fact tone of voice as one can have when being forced to read it out loud against one's will

apparently they're doing the "relatively normal person surrounded by crazies" thing since male main character's little sister insists on pretending to be a vampire at home

    lol "fullmetal necromancer"

Well, the show went into actual "just romance" territory and wasn't particularly entertaining in the process.

    Also lol sounding girly.

    also lol leaving cliffhangers

dangit i want to drop this series but it's not letting me

oh gosh this just had to involve a socially awkward scientist girl did it

and not just that, but she also refers to herself in third-person

and not just that, but also knockoff evangelion robot porn -- not "robot porn" as in "giant robots everywhere for fans of giant robots", but "giant robots talking smuttily and making glaringly obvious references to sexuality"

okay i think i've had it, bye

why can't we have more normal, socially-well-adjusted scientist girls

So, every poorly done romance anime ever.
    Also lol sounding girly.

This reaaaaaally doesn't sound funny out of context.

also GMH you could screencap stuff so it doesn't just sound like you've finally gone off the deep end

okay i'll try to screencap stuff next time

fwiw the "sounding girly" part was basically the male lead, in a flashback, commenting that the best friend he knew as a kid (and is shown to look like a boy, at least) sounded "girly", and then later in the episode

anyway meanwhile this show seems to be trying to figure out how much stupid it can cram into one show

edit: the problem with screencapping this is that i can't screencap dub lines

also, unrelated: wanted to point out that this series is rather distinctive in that every female character has noticeable lips. personally i'd rather they not do this though lol
  • There is love everywhere, I already know
every female character has noticeable lips

There is no show like this not Love Live! that deserves to exist.

why are you continuing to watch a crap sub
  • edited 2017-08-30 21:05:38
Because after all that went on with torrent sites the official subs were the easiest to get as I'm not in any private trackers for anime.

Also, this went through three different spellings somehow.

Wait, these are the OFFICIAL subs???

The heck with this; you should have asked me and I could have gotten you something far better. At least, I recall that it was far better in being at least consistent and correct, though I can't check that right now because it's stuck in a box somewhere.
  • edited 2017-08-31 00:34:38
Would this involve physically sending me copies or just an invite to a private tracker? Because the second would most likely still be useful for other stuff.

Also I updated my blog some. That includes explaining the splatter of posts up there that I made about Haganai, in a more comprehensible format. No screenshots, still, sorry, though it's a dub so there's no interesting dialogue I can screenshot.

    Thanks for the clarification.

By the way, next cour there's a show called Animegataris that is sort of basically about socially akward anime fans trying to survive the end of the world. GARNiDELiA are on board to do the OP too, so I'm excited.

Otherwise, other weirdos deal with each other shows I know are GJ-bu (which I have personal experience with and loved), Denki-gai no Honya-san (which always seemed like a fun show to watch if I had the time) and Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! (which has Mizuki Nana in one of her few random seiyuu bits as of late).

am i the only one who is a little tired of this self-reference meme, involving anime fans (including but not limited to downright otakus) being insert characters or otherwise involved in situations?

it seems a little overdone lately and while it can certainly work i feel like i'm not in the mood for it

i mean, whether, say, Nanoha Takamachi is an anime fan herself seems it would be the most inconsequential thing in characterizing her, for example; her whole point (in my mind at least) is being that distinctive combination of empathetic skill and (magical) firepower, and as long as that doesn't change, adding a geekystuff background seems to be a pointless gimmick

somewhat more relevant gimmick is if a character actively uses their geekystuff familiarity as part of their actions in the story, which the main character of Re:Zero seems to be doing, but still it feels ham-handed. like, y'know, i was reading this to get away from that, right?

The protagonist of Infinite Dendrogram* is sort of a nerd, but it's limited to him referencing things when relevant.

I think Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku dealt with most of the magical girls knowing enough about anime culture to reference it well too.

Putting <>s around things is a good way to make them disappear, I guess.
  • edited 2017-09-02 10:26:58
From what I've seen Nanoha has never demonstrated "empathetic skill" more than like, Hibiki. The main difference is how people treat her more than anything else.

Also, firepower doesn't really have anything to do with characterization.
I think Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku dealt with most of the magical girls knowing enough about anime culture to reference it well too.

Mahoiku also very strongly implies, if not explicitly stating that people who watch anime are just more likely to become magical girls. (was it explicitly stated when describing Magical Daisy's backstory?)
