  • Has friends besides tanks now
Friend's Twitter status: "Missed my afterschool cup! Great!" (Her phone is hilariously buggy and turned "bus" into "cup", if you hadn't figured that latter detail out).

My first thought: "She's in the Light Music Club? :O"
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Oh yeah, I still need to finish K-On.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
    Yes you do.

    /channeling the now-gone DYRE
  • Is it weird that "cup" made me think of bras, rather than the things you drink out of?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Everybody tells me not to watch Bleach, because it's just standard generic shonen fare.

But I don't really watch any shonen.

    So I'm watching it anyway.

    >_>

It's not that it's standard and generic--in fact, the first two seasons are really pretty good, and the first, especially, has some neat ideas and implementations.

It's just very poorly written once you get into arcs three and beyond, as if Kubo knew he had landed on a cash cow and stopped caring.

For something similar, I'd recommend Yu Yu Hakusho instead, personally. Or for just plain good shonen, Rurouni Kenshin.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I read part of the Bleach manga once. It was...well, the start was pretty okay. It got very boring very fast, though.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^^It suffers from pacing issues and art issues as well. Not to mention that Kubo admitted he was making stuff up as he went along.

I shall watch the first few seasons then, and see how I like it. (It has over 200 episodes :O  )

I can give it to my brother if I don't like it, at least. Considering he's binging on Naruto and actually enjoying it, I am sure he won't mind.

^^ I consider a lot of flaws to fall under "poor writing", including bad pacing. I didn't cover art, though, true; it looks nice in the areas where Kubo actually puts time into details, but if something is deemed unimportant--like, say, most of the background--it becomes completely white, with maybe a few lines to show that there's actually still something.

^ Yeah, by all means watch the first three seasons. And the descent of the rest of the series is pretty gradual, from a storytelling standpoint.

V True. But neglect of detail is one of the flaws of the franchise as a whole, I think. I wouldn't know if it holds true for the anime, since I never saw the point of reading and watching a work at the same time.

I'm watching it, not reading it, though.

Note that Bleach is the only one of the current major Shonen fighters that isn't in Shonen Jump's top 3 series.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^What replaced it? Toriko right? Though it has its flaws it deserves the spot more than Bleach.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
It's generally hovered in fourth. A few different things have been ahead of it in third, depending on what timeframe you're talking about.

What's keeping Naruto there, if I might ask and if anyone knows? Has it actually done anything cool recently?

Details make up a lot of the work.

I'll have to watch it to find out though.

I mean, I sort-of enjoyed Naruto. I grew tired of the filler and only watching one episode at a time though.

By that I mostly meant art, though Kubo does seem to have a habit of neglecting ideas he could have implemented to good effect.

The target demographic for Naruto generally... doesn't care overly much for the finer aspects of storytelling.

It took me ages to convince my brother to watch Fullmetal Alchemist afterwards.

stop posting so much I can't keep up D:

Animation can sometimes make up for a lack of detail, so... hmmm

@Everest: That's a common thread between a lot of long running shounen manga. They start out with good ideas, but can't keep it up after 100+ chapters. Given the life of a mangaka, I can't really blame them though.

Also, Cygan. When it comes to something like Bleach. I would read the manga, it takes far less time.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Seconding the "read the manga."

Also lets you skip out on all the crappy filler.

Another thing about that Bleach anime that you would notice.

The recaps are long. Really, really long. At its worst the op + the recap would take up a third of the full episdode.

Watching anime is easier than manga for me. Mostly because the moving pictures and all... >_>

It's the same problem I have reading books though.

With all the filler (though never Naruto levels of bad) it's not so cut and dry...

Quite simply I shall just ask people to compile a list of bad filler episodes so I can skip them =D

Filler arcs are easy to ignore, but filler in normal episodes is harder (the aforementioned recap thing).
  • Has One piece been brought up yet?

My friend said the Bleach filler actually was really high quality and that a filler character actually was brought into the main story as a full-blown character.

    You'd think so :3

The recaps don't happen anymore, at least not after the Arrancar arc. They were kind of long.

^^Debatable, and YMMV of course, but people generally agree each filler was better than the last.
