Watched it for a philosophy class. It was awesome.
Screw Utena, I have more gun!
^^ I watched it because I felt like it. :P
When the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie came out, it was the first Trek thing I'd ever actually seen, and I got really into it. Borrowed and watched the complete TOS from my neighbor, then picked up the complete TNG collection on eBay. I made it to about season 4 before stuff happened and I kind of stopped watching, but lately I've got the urge again. So I'm going back and watching a few of my favorite episodes before picking up where I left off.
Then I dunno, DS9 on Netflix or something.
What J.J. Abrams made wasn't Star Trek.
I mean, it wasn't terrible or anything but it wasn't Star Trek.
I don't care? It was a fun movie and I really doubt I'd have gotten into the series proper without it.
It's really bugs me when people go all discontinuity on an adaptation or series they didn't like of an IP they like.
Either way, I have to agree. I wouldn't have enjoyed an actual star trek movie for pretty much the same reasons I don't enjoy a James Bond movie.
Honestly, all I can say is that stories belong to the audience once they get out and pretending otherwise seems pretty ridiculous to me.
It's been quite a while since I've made a megapost.
And this was pretty small too. not what I'd consider a real gigantpost.
what is this i hear?
the great glenn magus harvey has gone.............................laconic?!?!
More like I've gone AFK more often, thanks to having a ton of applications, and then a ton of issues to think about regarding the admissions offers I've gotten, between reply deadlines, campus visits, financial aid packages, potential career paths, academic and non-academic resources, and much more.
I guess I'll have to agree to disagree. Canon>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fanon in my book.
I don't think that canon or fanon are more important than each other, but simply that it's your choice what to care about and how to interpret a story. You can choose to interpret it just as the authors meant for you to do it, but you don't have to.
>It's really bugs me when people go all discontinuity on an adaptation or series they didn't like of an IP they like.
It's a literal alternate universe that includes none of the themes that continued through all the Star Trek series (even the shitty ones) and these changes certainly aren't ones made out of artistic vision.
It's an enjoyable movie in its own right, but it doesn't follow the things that made Star Trek so important, successful, and resonant.
To me, it depends entirely on what type of work it is, ambiguity of interpretation by design is something.
I really can't make a call between canon and fanon, myself.
If you keep Star Wars in mind, you'll understand why.
^^ It bugs me that there's a very real dichotomy between intelligent and insightful on one hand, and bombastic and with mass appeal on the other. An unnecessary one, mind, but it bothers me that this is so often how it pans out when it's possible to create perfectly intelligent and insightful works of media that could be marketed to a wide audience.
I'd say that just because it doesn't speak of social issues, it doesn't mean that it can't be resonant. Just on a different level.
Man, Star Wars canon and fanon are both rife with missing the point.
^Certainly, but those were the things that made Star Trek resonant. If it could find a way to be emotionally resonant on another level I might be more accepting.
It seemed to almost go there with Spock's struggle between his human and vulcan side but that never really goes anywhere.
Did you get in anywhere?
Honestly, if there is just one reason to love Chris Nolan is that he understands that this dichotomy is not true (From an craftmanship perspective) and works under that assumption.
Not to mention ignoring the tone of the OT in favour of pretentious high fantasy shenanigans when the originals always felt closer to fairy tales and idealistic Westerns.
Honestly, I found Kirk's struggle between young rebellious man and captain and leader of a crew who needs to take care of them and lead them to victory quite compelling, if only because, um, I've been there. >_>

Oh mos def. There's a real false dichotomy in believing that something can't be viscerally pleasing and intelligent at the same time.
^Maybe if Christopher Pine wasn't such a swaggering prick I'd have bought it more. >_>
I dunno, Chris Pine brings in a charm to the role that Shatner simply doesn't have with all his stilted boring speeches.
Honestly, though I think that's part of the point. Kirk's a prick. He learns to not be a prick for the sake of other people's lives.
I like Chris Pine, keep in mind the only movie of his that I've seen is Carriers.
But the thing is, he's still kind of a prick when he does. The whole scene where he goads Spock into attacking him is incredibly hard to buy because of how petulant Kirk fucking sounds. It's another problem I have with how they set up the friendship between Kirk and Spock in that it starts out of animosity. Placing him as the opposite to Spock instead of McCoy is also a deviation I don't like, as Kirk was meant to be a man who could embody both logic and emotion.
I'm not going to pretend Shatner's acting has aged well, especially not compared to a crew that had Nimoy and Takei on it, but the only way Pine really brings depth to it is by being obnoxious and jerkish.
You were on the Enterprise?
As horrible as it must have been for those involved, I love inexplicable things like this.

I've been reading up on Elder Scrolls Lore instead of doing homework.
It's actually really interesting to me. I'm not usually the greatest fan of fantasy (Sci-Fi's my thing), but Elder Scrolls Lore actually really intrigues me.
Well, the day is almost over and I don't have a painful hangover. Today's birthday was pretty uneventful. Cake was good though, if a little strong.
