    ^Considering how long he's been around, I can only imagine it's deliberate.

    And I stopped pretty soon in because that was around the time when I realized I hate most shonen, and the characters mostly annoyed me.

    I liked a lot of secondary characters. Spirit, Franken, Marie, Azusa, the zombie dude, and the Grim Reaper were all great and with the exception of Black Star the kids didn't bother me.

    I only read the first 3 volumes before realizing that it's boring, generic shounen.  Of course, I do still like the art, and it's not like I actively dislike generic shounen series... so I could probably be pretty easily persuaded to start reading it again, I just haven't felt much of a desire to do so.  That said, Maka was my favorite character of what I read, due to her not being ridiculous.
