  • You can change. You can.
Because autism, silly. You really shouldn't ask beyond that, dude.
  • Silence is golden.

    Rest in peace, Jack

    Amen to that.

  • My obsessions are very rarely productive. How does drawing road signs and taking pictures of Meijer stores accomplish anything, you know?

I wish I knew why my brain is wired the way it is.
    I do, too.

That's why I like to read psychology articles every so often, especially since they often give advice on dealing with one's condition. Even just knowing that your problem has a name is a great help.

Speaking of which, I've recently found out that "fear of being judged" is called social anxiety. Considering how often I've heard people complain about that in meatspace, I'm surprised my phobia carried over to the Internet. But then again, it's easier to disguise such a thing without body languages and immediate response. Still, people are a lot more overtly judgmental on the Net.

Without wanting to ask anything too personal, those users who are on the spectrum, have you been diagnosed professionally or is it self diagnosis?

If self diagnosis, is there a reason for not seeking a professional verification?

(I ask as my work was in supporting roles with people on the autistic spectrum and so it is relevant to my professional/intellectual interests)
  • The earliest I remember being told about it was being told about it by an elementary school counselor when I was 8.

My parents told me some doctor told me I was autistic. I remember I saw a whole lot of counselors in elementary school of varying helpfulness, though I get the impression most people I've interacted with don't actually understand it. There's much about it I don't understand myself.

My veternarian told me my Platinum Swordtail had restless leg syndrome.
  • I was apparently diagnosed with Asperger's by some doctor when I was 7.

My parents, of course, didn't bother to tell me about this until I was 13. Grumble.

    @Abyss_Worm

I have found that there is very little understanding of anything to do with ASD especially in educational settings where understandings will matter a huge deal, it seems almost like unless the person you are talking to has a family member on the spectrum or has specifically worked with people on the spectrum then they are clueless.

Speaking of which, when I say varying helpfulness, the ones on the lower end of the scale pretty much told me it was my own fault for not behaving properly.

Thanks for starting this conversation, by the way.

Yeah that is exactly the wrong kind of reaction.

Luckily going by what my old boss was saying educational staff are being given more information on ASD in their training.

I've been diagnosed professionally. I was...I think I was 16-15. all I know is that it is fairly recent.
  • I almost got diagnosed as mentally retarded by a school counciler, if that counts at all.
  • You can change. You can.
    Really?

    Did he explain why?
  • It was something he was telling my parents, I didn't even know about till they told me, but apparently my behavoir was what triggered them to believe this.
  • You can change. You can.
"Them"? Thought it was only the councilor who thought you were mentally retarded?
  • that's the thing, I didn't even see the counciler about it -_-, as I said, I only heard about it from my parents.

  • You can change. You can.
    Ah.

For whatever it's worth, you don't sound mentally retarded from here. Just mentally unhinged.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
I would put my synchtube to watch some MADs,but I don't know how many of you guys would be interested in it
  • Well, I would watch but I have a class in about an hour and I don't have acess to flash at this moment

My doctor tried to diagnose me with Asperger's, but I didn't fit the requirements.
  • You can change. You can.
You don't fit, Cygan, to be honest. I'd say that ou'd have problems, but lack of empathy is hardly one of them.

In other news, I'm sick as hell and my back is killing me.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
If I were to be honest I think a counsellor would have an interesting time with me.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I definitely have problems, up to and including not really having social skills and social-phobia.

They aren't mental illnesses though. They're just due to a lousy upbringing.

The only mental illness I was ever officially diagnosed with was clinical depression.

Also, they fucked up on my IQ test >:|
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I wouldn't trust IQ tests much anyway, the fact you can buy a book that teaches you to basically anticipate the general scope of the questions allowing you to jump up loads of point seems to me that the test isn't measuring anything but your skill at IQ tests.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
It's a useful tool if you didn't do that.

I scored far too high though. Did another one recently with a professional, scored over 20 points lower than last time (106). So, yeah.

    You can change. You can.
I had an IQ test for one of those tests to see what careers would you be interested in.

    I scored 120-130-ish

I also cheated. Because I'm that good. >:)

^Not really. IQ tests only test abstration qualities. they don't test rhethoric, and many other things.

    ^^ Indeed.

(The 106 is my current score, not my old score. My IQ is not 85 or less.)
