    You can change. You can.
Well, yeah, another problem of the show is that, even though the cast is likeable as hell, all five characters, except Homura, seem to be tied by their function on the metaplot. So, Mami's there to die and show us how risky the job is, Sayaka is there to show us what being a Meguca entails, Kyuoko is there to show us how most Magical Girls don't always fight for good and also tell us how wishes can damage the wisher and Madoka's role on the story is not clear until the last third, making her role as a measly POV kinda sad and hard to empathize with as the implication that she's as much a watcher as us seems to try and force sympathy on the viewer, in my opinion.

^There're a couple of movies coming up, apparently.

    > I'm not sure why "yuri overtones" count as a bad thing though...

It's not; it's just not a selling point for me.

    > Oh, also, even if you didn't like the first Precure series, other
Precure series are generally unrelated and quite a bit different.  And,
at least in the case of Heartcatch Precure, far better, so that would
probably be a better series to try than Futari Wa Pretty Cure.

So which Precure series should I start with?  Alternatively, should I rewatch the first Precure episode with proper audio (either original + subs, or dub)?  Fun fact: I watched the second half of the first episode mostly with replaced audio--the audio being replaced by Ferrucio Busoni's Variations and Fugue on Chopin's Prelude in C minor.  Unfortunately, the video has since been taken down, and before I've been able to get a reply on who the pianist was.  Damnit, Toei, don't be a killjoy, especially when it comes to fuckin' awesome piano music.  Nevertheless, the plot of the episode still made sense to me.

    > Think shojo deconstructivism mixed with early-Evangelion's mix of humor
and relatively dark characters with a dash of Gainax insanity.

    1. What exactly is the shojo genre anyway?  Just cuteness and excessive flower and bubble-glare backgrounds?
    2. Mixing humor with relatively dark characters and a dash of insanity doesn't sound particularly appealing to me.  It would have to do this mix very carefully for me to like it, in my experience.  YMMV I guess.

^ Like I said, if you want to watch a Precure series, start with Heartcatch Precure since it's the best.
  • You can change. You can.
    1. What exactly is the shojo genre anyway? Just cuteness and excessive flower and bubble-glare backgrounds?

Not really. Shojo is basically anime directed at girls. So basically, anime with a clear romantic bent, girls are the lead, usually, as well as stories about personal growth and stuff.

    2. Mixing humor with relatively dark characters and a dash of insanity doesn't sound particularly appealing to me. It would have to do this mix very carefully for me to like it, in my experience. YMMV I guess.

Well, you did like Eva, and early Evangelion was pretty much what I described, to be honest.

It bears mentioning that the relative refers to darker characters in comparison to most of the shojo released at the time of Utena's broadcasting.

Also, I haven't watched and I'm going by other people's comments.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Watching Blade 2.

I love this scene where the love interest is all 'Why do you hate vampires so much?' and instead of going 'Because they're soulless blood-sucking monsters that murdered my mom you bitch' he says 'it's in my blood'

    Go go David Goyer dialogue.
  • You can change. You can.
    you gotta admit

    the pun is delicious
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Oh man, if you like that pun, you will fucking love Blade 2. You can not go five minutes without Blood being mentioned or references to the theme of kinship in this film.
  • WARNING LATE TO THE PARTY

Juan, I thought internship's don't pay diddly squat?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I liked NGE most for the characters and their interactions and development.  It had characters that I felt deeply sympathetic toward.  The action and plot was a delivery mechanism for the characterization, in my opinion.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
GOD DAMMIT YOU FUCKING KILL DONNIE YEN OFF FUCKING SCREEN YOU BASTARDS WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT GOYER I'M COMING FOR YOOOOOOOOU!
  • Fortunately, Utena is also largely focused on the characters and their interactions and development.  So... yeah.

Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Wait, what about Donnie Yen now?

    He was in Blade 2?

Is that the one with the vampire mutation and the old vampire lord?

^ Okay, fine, I'll give it a shot.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Indeed. It's actually a pretty awesome movie in that 'video game you watch' kind of way. Donnie Yen's in it, but as I've pointed out, criminally underused.

From the first episode, Kyubey told her she was gonna be incredibly powerful and change the world. Her role was set, and the plot required her to work up to it, which she did in a sort of vicarious way. I don't mind if characters are effectively props primarily meant to support a metaplot if they're effective props and if I can be attached to them for what they are.

You mean to tell me I watched a movie with Donnie Yen in it without realizing?

    Holy shit.
  • You can change. You can.

oh yay, my kinda movie. Campy pun shit~

Juan, I thought internship's don't pay diddly squat?

    sorta kinda maybe?

The thing is, this is not an internship by normal means (I pulled in some favours and those favours pulled some favours...)
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
So someone heard you like favours, so they enacted favourception?
  • Juan confirmed for cartel connections.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
He's Columbian, what did you expect?

Just finished watching Saving Private Ryan for the first time (slowpoke.jpg).

    Wow.
  • You can change. You can.
    >columbian

    canada joke

anyway, Private Ryan is a great great movie. Probably one of my favorite war flicks. Apart from maybe the Dirty Dozen and Apocalypse Now.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Yeah, it was really good.

Also, lol at Nathan Fillion being the other James Ryan.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Man, it's weird to think Fillion's Canadian. He seems so All-American.
  • You can change. You can.
    Inorite?

Honestly, Ryan has probably one of the most hilarious "These guys are not famous yet" casts of all time. Fillion, Diesel, Bryan Cranston.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
^^ Maybe he's like Bandit Keith.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    >>Bryan Cranston

holy shit how did I miss that
  • The thing is, this is not an internship by normal means (I pulled in some favours and those favours pulled some favours...)

In retrospect, I regret not having jumped at this sort of opportunity more often. My resume could have had something beautiful on it. Ah, well.

  • You can change. You can.
The funny thing about Fillion is that the role that makes everyone think he's an American is not an American at all.

Then again, if there's anything more American than Malcolm Reynolds, then that man is overdoising in supersoldier serum or something.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
  • You can change. You can.
Motherfuckingly insane priests are american as fuck, too.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Yeah, psychotic and violent protestants are a staple that goes back to Salem.
