Man, I can't edit my posts. Someone please fix my mess.

Some time ago I had given up on the fact that things have to get worse before they can get better.

Besides that, I don't really think Maduro will last long, and Capriles (who's now my personal hero) and the rest of the MUD are working on bringing him down. Not that they need to. And the pot banging is nice to hear.

And, well, sharing all this stuff here is recomforting. Thank you all.

Hah, that's what she'd like to think. Anyhows, glad to hear she's safe.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

It's a bug that happens sometimes when you edit right after posting. Try refreshing the page then trying to edit again. If it still doesn't work, then that's a problem I'm unfamiliar with.

  • ^^ Huh, I tried doing that and my first post became my third. Whatever, I guess.

Anyhows, I've been glued to the screen for long enough now, but I should be working on trying to get the hell out of here, so, see you guys! I'll let you know if things get even worse.

Who else here thinks Venezuela's politicians are officially outclassing Serbia's in terms of craziness?

This whole situation reminds me much of Serbia in 2000, to be honest.  One of the chief reasons why I'm so hostile to Capriles is that the "revolution" ended up fucking us all over even though we were already fucked to begin with.

  • "you duck spawn, refined creature, you try to be cynical, yokel, but all that comes out of it is that you're a dunce!!!!! you duck plug!"

Can I ask for more on Uribe? I've read pretty favourable (to him) article once in my newspaper. Gave the impression of loony, but effective in curbing all the guerilla warfare and shit. I wonder if he was kinda crazy but really effective, or kinda effective but really crazy, because that article painted him as more of the former.

That international incident, IIRC, had something to do with Chavez and his pals (among them the Ecuadorian guy) supporting the guerillas, right? I think it was something along the lines of Uribe deciding that if FARC folks receive foreign support, he'd be fine with crossing the border to get them.

  • Kichigai birthday!!
I like how, out of all the shit going down, my country's media main concern is "H-he said mean things about Spain ;_;"

    You can change. You can.

    OK so Uribe

    right

    - gets documents in order -

    So here's uh the deal

back in 1989, M-19 demobilized and load down their weapons. M-19 was probably the scariest of the insurgent groups in Colombia history having even laid siege to the Palace of Justice, amongst many other things and deeds.

In exchange for laying down their weapons and disbanding, most of their members were given a chance at playing politician. Any sane person would have said no and asked for prison instead. They didn't In fact, Navarro-Wolff, their second-in-command was one of the three senators who wrote the 1991 constitution that is still upheld by the current government. It's a very neat document for the most part, admittedly, especially considering it has the sexiest first amendment, in my opinion (The Right To Live)

Anyway, so, after this success in peaceful negotiations, Carlos Pastrana (NOT the president who accomplished this, mind you. In fact, he was elected in 1998) decides that his government can reach both FARC and ELN and offers them a no man's land where they can sit down and negotiate in the Guaviare area.

But the government didn't have a negotiation plan and FARC ended up intensifying their attacks and "recruitment drives" (Kidnapping people, most often kids, and training them to fight.)

Of course, this caused outrage. And people wanted a stronger hand. Not to mention that the paramilitary forces (AUC) were warring with the guerrillas over the coke trade in order to, you know, fund their wars. So overall it was messy.

There was one thing Pastrana did, though. He approached the Clinton administration and they devices the Colombia Plan. The idea behind the plan was strengthening the Colombian military forces, with the condition that they fought the War on Drugs right at the source.

Strengthening this tie and a will to take it even further than that was the core of Uribe's election campaign. Considering people hated Pastrana and wanted extreme measures against insurgents, it wasn't hard for him to be elected.

As was said before, he is very much a great Commander in Chief. It's just that he can't do peace and his sacrifice of social development endeavours ended up causing more problems for the countries. But still, he handled the problem and it was kind of needed to be handled. He ended up even setting up a demobilization program for FARC and ELN, as well as a humanitarian trade option in order to free various political prisoners (Perhaps most famously, Pablo Emilio Moncayo)

but the dude was also crazy paranoid and abused his power. Honestly, I think the most obvious comparison is Nixon. He did some important things, but his abuse of power and willingness to use presidential resources to spy on the opposition or the court are unforgivable.

Regarding Operation Phoenix: It's important to remember that the attack happened around five AM, after the Military got a fix on AKA 'Raul Reyes' location. And they bombed it right away.

Oh and that location happened to be Ecuatorian territory. So it wasn't just as if Chavez and Correa were trying to defend their guerrilla mates. I wouldn't say that they are/were not in cahoots with the guerrilla but the fact of the matter is that Uribe violated the sovereignty of Ecuatorian territory without their permission and committed an act of violence that could have ended with a high value of collateral damage. Not to mention, it sets a dangerous precedent.

yo you made me write this shit

you don't have any thoughts or what

  • Man, I can't concentrate on stuff.

Reminds me of that time Uribe caused another Venezuela-Colombia drama like a week or so before leaving office, while everybody knew Santos would put a stop to it.

Also, what about that recent thing with Uribe undermining Santos' negotiations with the FARC? How's that going?

  • You can change. You can.

All he's doing is twittering like a bitter ex-president trying to be relevant is bound to do.

You're the Alex here, it's not my task to try to convince the other the sky is green or shit. Er, I mean, I was offline. So, thanks. That's a nice summary, and pretty much fits well what I did know of the guy, so there's nothing I could ask further or argue about.

Also: like, one of my friends is in Cartagena right now, IIRC, some sort of six months of teaching English. When I learned she's about to leave, I asked if it's safe, you know, world's lead in murder per capita and shit. She said I was the first to show concern, other folks just assumed she's going to smuggle coke. Heh heh.

I'm curious, because from the way this statement is structured, it seems like this is a positive reaction to learning about this.

and that would certainly be interesting to examine the mind-set of the person who finds this thing to be "positive"

  • The username really says it all.

A socially maladjusted person is sad. A socially maladjusted person who constructs a system of ideas to justify it and point the finger to society is fascinating. A socially maladjusted person who constructs a system of ideas that fits somewhat but not completely in an existing niche(the MRA sphere in this case) and causes pointless flamewars by snowflaking it up is exquisite.

It's not about 'justifiable'schadenfreude(although you could make a case that a person raging at them uppity feminists deserves to be alone) so much as hilarious leaps in logic, quotable terminology and the grandeur the mundane is giving(f. ex., hunting for dates becomes a Love Quest, curious in how close it embodies the chivalric romance in that it's all about the suffering of the protagonist never obtaining the girl).

    Congratulations, Juan!

For some reason, every single comment that I had tried to post on domestic news sites in the last month or so got blocked. :(

Meanwhile, a guy calling himself "Expert" is simultaneously criticizing conservativism and calling for the control and repression of sexuality ("a dangerous and irrational urge that is the main cause for violence and antisocial behaviour in the developed world") through censorship and a complete ban of "overly revealing clothing".

You just wouldn't believe how weird defense mechanism these people can develop for being chronically unable to get laid.

"you duck spawn, refined creature, you try to be cynical, yokel, but all that comes out of it is that you're a dunce!!!!! you duck plug!"

So, the council of a certain city around here had to name a roundabout (or how do you call that circular streets meet things).

First proposal came from the left-wing councilors, who proposed to name it after a communist official. After everyone else stopped cringing, there was a proposal to honour Thatcher. However, the law says five years need to pass since the death of a person for a street to be named after her, so in the end it couldn't have been Thatcher anyway, which everyone knew but it still didn't stop them from suggesting her. Then, some other folks came up with an idea that the place is too ugly anyway to "honour" anyone with it, and everybody agreed to a compromise solution of naming it after the nearby railway station.

BTW, I'm thinking about reposting it to a certain relevant thread on TVT. Do you think it's worth it? I mean, I'd have to de-lurk.

    edit: congrats.

You just wouldn't believe how weird reasonings people in general can develop surrounding pretty much any idea.

There was an odd moment earlier today.

I was in Washington, DC.  I had just finished attending a pretty formal event (people in suits and ties), on some upper floor in a building where everyone was dressed pretty formally/professionally.  Like, think, the office building of a very well-respected organization, in the capital city.  Heck, the moderator for the panel discussion was a celebrity herself.

So I'm walking toward the elevator with a couple friends who had also come to the event, after saying bye to my professor (who was on the panel).

Suddenly, this really cute girl in a tank top and shorts (i.e. completely incongruous choice of clothing) runs into the space to our right, keeps pace with us as we walk toward the elevator, then continues over and into some other meeting space.  (There were several meetings going on on that floor, all at once.)  I think she may have been carrying some papers, which would explain that.

    So, since Tuesday:

    • All but asking for violence against the opposition while on simulcast and on multiple TV shows.

    • Calling for motorcycle gangs to spread out.

    • Motorcycle gangs and armymen shooting at protestors.

    • In light of the above, calling for officialists to counterprotest.

    • Physically attacking two MUD deputees during an assembly (warning: graphic)

    • Denying the right to speak at the National Assembly to deputees who call for a full audit.

    • Threatening not to grant funds to governments with governors who call for a full audit. The funds would be granted to its comunal councils instead.

    • The only non-chavist National Electoral Council rector is under investigation.

    • Two newspaper buildings have been raided.

    • A state legislator has disappeared.

    • Most of the fires that were said to have been caused by the opposition on Monday turned out to not have happened at all. The one that did happen was a false flag opperation. Other claims turned out to be false or distorted.

    • Two other false flag operations were uncovered as they happened.

    • Maduro called for officialists to shoot fireworks during pot banging time (and I've just realized how dirty this sounds) so as to drown it down. It failed for many obvious reasons.

    • Openly declaring they'd fire public workers who voted for Capriles. They've had their belongings (phones, etc.) checked to see if they have things like Capriles' photos to fire them.

    • An audit of the remaining 46% votes has been accepted. This will take a month (the first 54% took less than 6 hours) and from what I understand it won't be a throughout audit. The MUD has accepted this. I have a bad feeling about this.
