  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!

^Yeah, but that's a problem with the execution of the ending itself, not with having no variation.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Were you using divine weapons? They're the exception. Otherwise kicking is the only way to get them completely gone (though they stop reviving when you kill their necromancers).

    what necromancers

this is like, the first level

i don't even have the stuff to upgrade my weapons yet

While ME3's ending might be that bad I still object to the idea that it had to be a culmination of your choices, because any of the important ones culminated in character interactions.

And that sure is why random squadmates of yours abandoned you on Earth to fly to some jungle planet with Joker and EDI. Including your love interest. For literally no reason. Yup.

There are no skeletons in the first level (unless you're insane and went to the cemetery right at the start).  You're just talking about hollow soldiers then?

In any case, if it's the part I'm thinking of, it's easy enough to just kick that guy off the ledge.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Oh, you're not where I thought you were then. Those enemies aren't skeletons; they're undead soldiers. (ninja'd)

Fuck if I know. I haven't played for like... two months. They play more like the skeletons in most games than zombies, so I call them skeletons.

In any case, if it's the part I'm thinking of, it's easy enough to just kick that guy off the ledge.

It's usually easy enough to try, but you first have to position yourself so that you don't accidentally move off the ledge when you try, and the skeleton has this thing where if you try to kick him he can punch you or something, and bam you've been knocked off a cliff.

And because I started as a wanderer, I didn't actually have a kick attack. I had to run back and grind skeletons for something ridiculous like an hour until they finally dropped a Longsword.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
If you have a longsword, you really shouldn't need to kick that guy.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I don't need to kick that guy now. I never did, I just waited for him to come where I am.

Longswords are really bad weapons for high-Dexterity characters though. :|

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Yeah...

The wanderer isn't exactly the best starting class.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

It's good for nearly everything else though. I got way farther as a Wanderer than I ever did as a Soldier or a Pyromancer.

Then there's also the fact that the game refused to ever give me a bow, forcing me to make do with the inferior crossbow. :|

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Really? You didn't do well with pyromancy? About everything for the first hour is weak to them, and they have good strength and fast growth, making them ideal for greatswords.
  • Bows suck.  There's really no need to use them.

In fact, I can't even think of any part where they might be useful.

    Maybe the Ornstein/Slough boss fight.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I kept getting confused and forgetting what buttons did what.

The same goes for every magic class in this game.

There's a reason I always stick to the same style.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

In fact, I can't even think of any part where they might be useful.

Any time the enemy isn't right next to you.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
But then they just run over to you.
  • Magic is useful at a distance because it tends to do absurdly high damage.  But bows... don't.  So unless you're shooting something that actually can't run over to you, then it's barely worth it.

And then you swap to your sword. Only it's easier to kill them because they're lower on health.

And, you, enemies that can't run over to you. Fucking balcony mage. Fucking crossbow.

^ Wanderers are great with Bows. :|

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

Bows are good for high dexterity characters who might be able to thin a group out before entering close range, or lure enemies over while dealing decent damage. There's also the fact that even pretty basic bows tend to scale really well with that stat, making them ideal for starting a fight by dealing some decent damage at long range and bringing close combat to an area that suits you. Mundane bows can also be upgraded like any other weapons, so if you have the minimum stats for one, you can scale it off faith or intelligence, or make it elemental.

They're by no means a mainstay, but they can be useful tools, especially if your character build just happens to excel in dexterity. That said, I've never found dexterity characters that useful, although that might be a holdover attitude from Demon's Souls, where faith and intelligence builds destroyed all the others. Except for the Blueblood Sword luck build.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

And considering I'm, you know, a Wanderer, who is basically nothing but Endurance, Vitality and Dexterity... :P

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
The one enemy bows had a distinct advantage against got patched to be immune to them.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

    -shrug-

Bows are useful in a lot of situations. Large, slow enemies are particularly vulnerable to any ranged attacks; people prefer magic because it has higher damage, but bows will do just as fine.

Shooting enemies from a distance can also draw enemies out of buildings/off bridges, ect, pulling them onto more favourable terrain for you, saving you a lot of hassle.

And they are especially useful for enemies which are dangerous in melee, such as the weird plant creatures underneath the blacksmith, in the forest.

They won't ever murderize everything like a greatsword can, and they don't do massive damage like magic does, but if you're going that route anyway, I don't see why you're playing a high-Dex character. And if you're not playing a high-Dex character, why are you using a bow?

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Because pathfinding exploit kills :D

I'm not saying bows are useless. They're just not optimal.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

    Claymore is the only optimal

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Man-serpent greatsword is better.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Yeah, but again, if you're going for an optimal build, why are you playing a high-Dex character?

Well, backstabs, I guess. But that's boring. And difficult to do quite often due to terrain.

  • Technically, I guess an optimal build would have 99 in everything, so they would be a high-dex (and everything else) character...

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

That would take a ridiculous amount of grinding.

on second thought i don't actually care so

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

You know what would we cool?

A sci-fi setting that uses all sorts of fantasy names for high-tech things.  A "skeleton" might be a basic model of powered armor.  A "warlock" might be a lightly-armored high-speed ground combat vehicle.  A "wyrm" might be a mobile long chain of guns.

Stats stop giving you much after 50.
  • edited 2012-05-29 11:02:37

You'd still benefit from them, even if only a little bit.

    Except for Attunement, I gues.

But yeah, 50 everything would be almost as good.
