Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

In light of a recent conversation on IRC about FFV, I want to note that the player's exposure to Gilgamesh isn't just a couple battles and "a few lines of casual in-combat blather", but also includes hearing a rockin' action boss battle theme.

1: Take these elemental crystals and beat up fiends sent by evil void.  (The time loop mindfuck only happens in the last hour or so of the game.)

2: Evil empire is fucking shit up.  Grab an airship for your rebellion and beat them up.  Expect almost every named character who isn't a permanent member of your party to die pointlessly.

3: Save the elemental crystals and beat up evil void.

I mean...there are a few common threads here.  Just saying.

Also, halfway through Lapis Ruins in Recettear's postgame.  Well, that plot just took a very sudden and unexpectedly dark turn.  D:

...I really need to get back to playing Recettear.

I'm at the point now where trash mobs drop absolutely nothing I need unless they're red knights or will-o-wisps.  And the last time I tried fighting will-o-wisps they hit me for mid-90's.  I'm thinking that's gonna involve Caillou just sitting there spamming sparkburst.

Other than that, all I need are chest and boss drops.  Joy.

  • Recently beat TL2 on Veteran with all four classes (Classist achievement).  Currently level 66 with an Outlander defensive/poison build on Veteran and very very early in the game with a HCV Engineer tank build.

Spelunky's remixed version, with tons of new features, updated graphics, and what appears to be a multiplayer mode with high friendship-ending tendencies, has now been released on GOG and Steam.

  • They're somethin' else.

    Sweet

    Kichigai birthday!!

I've been playing DJ Max lately. I suck at it but it's pretty fun.

I wish I had a PS2 and beatmania controllers weren't so damn expensive though.

    I wish I had a DDR pad.

  • Kichigai birthday!!
Actually DDR is the Bemani game that seems the least fun to me. Which sucks because it's also the most popular.
I just want to play some Jubeat or Reflec Beat

    Wrong thread.

  • Kichigai birthday!!
I wish Game Freak made more 2D platformers. Both Drill Dozer and Smart Ball were pretty good.

In fact, I wish their games that aren't Pokemon got more attention.
  • Fact: Pulseman is objectively the best gamefreaks game.

  • Pulseman was pretty great, though it loses points for me because the Casino level hurt my eyes to the point where I had to stop playing altogether.

    Kichigai birthday!!

I beat Drill Dozer today. It was very fun.

Man, with such great in-depth reviews it should be no time before Kotako hires me.

@AttObl is streaming AIR (the visual novel) here: Watch live video from attobl on www.twitch.tv

Argue all you want about whether visual novels count as videogames but I'm announcing this here anyway.

Edit: Stopping temporarily.  Will continue streaming later.

Edit: Oops, I completely forgot about the streaming thread.  Good call on that one!

    a little muffled

Wow, somehow I have been in offline mode on Steam for the several weeks without noticing. That would explain why my achievements in XCOM weren't updating properly. (If you check my profile now it will tell you I unlocked sixteen achievements today.)

Lapis Ruins complete in Recettear.  Arma get.

Arma is kinda terrible.  I mean, she starts out at level 1, which is enough of a pain in the ass, but her attacks are really glitchy and don't hit floating enemies half the time.  Also she only has one special, and it's slow as shit and uses all your SP for one shot, so you're entirely reduced to spamming a shitty normal attack that's not that powerful, too slow to keep an enemy locked down or prevent them from attacking (you get freely trampled by blue tentacles, can't kill pumpkins before they take off, and gnolls will get shots off in between hits -- all of which will murder you silly in the bottom third of the only dungeon left in the game you actually give a damn about by the time you get Arma), has a ridiculous recovery time, and utterly fails at killing bees because it has no lateral area.  And in the dungeon that opens up right after you get her, bees are REALLY dangerous.  It mostly just sucks at everything but range, really.

Oh and she has to take several seconds to reload every 10 shots, but you can't do it manually during a safe spot.  You have actually expend the entire clip.

Also I got a treasure called a Welcome Bear.  Not sure if WoW reference or just silly thing.

How does God of War's gameplay suck, exactly? Like Monsoon said, it combines aspects from various other games to create a fluid experience.

    Oh wow I'm late.

In any case, God of War's gameplay is more or less fine, but it doesn't encourage players to consider synergies, strategise or otherwise put consideration into their approaches to problems (apart from the occasional puzzle).

Take the different weapons, for instance. I've forgotten what they are because I so rarely used anything that wasn't the default weapon. This is because you acquire new weapons relatively evenly throughout the game, but each one has to be upgraded separately. Since you have the default chain-blade-thingies from the outset of the game, though, they'll be the first to be upgraded unless you come into the game with the knowledge that you'll acquire additional weapons.

So the upgrade economy of the game, due to resource distribution and the placement of the additional weapons, doesn't support making a choice between weapons. Most people will have already upgraded their default weapons and made them almost entirely superior to other choices. In addition, they won't want to split their investment between different upgrade paths. That means that there's a strong incentive to only use and only upgrade the weapon you begin with. And when you break all that down, you have a game where that choice is an illusion because so few people will, in a practical sense, actually use the options available to them.

That's just one example, although it does reflect how the combat doesn't really ask you to use the tools provided -- you can win each of the games largely by repeating your favourite combos.

God of War certainly plays fluidly, and I'll give it that the level design is often very good. Even excellent. Those traits are wasted, though, when the core gameplay doesn't have much depth. God of War isn't exactly intended to be a strategy game, of course, but with millions of dollars sunk into the development of the various games, I would have thought at least one of the game designers might have come up with a way to incentivise more diverse approaches to the problems put in front of the players. This is why I was praising Castlevania: Lords of Shadow before; by linking your HP to your performance in combat, it incentivises playing efficiently at all times, meaning that you have to diversify your strategies, combos and the tools you use in order to overcome each of the game's obstacles.

  • a little muffled

I got a 3DS for my birthday. Someone tell me what to do with it.

  • Pokemon XY?

That's what I'm getting for my birthday.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

    Monster Hunter. Also Fire Emblem.

    a little muffled

@Kraken: Oh I'm definitely getting that when it comes out (it's one of the main reasons I asked for a 3DS), but that's still two months away.

The other main reasons I wanted a 3DS are the new Zelda and Ace Attorney games but those are even further away.

@MadassAlex: Eh, I'm not a huge fan of Fire Emblem as a series after having played a few of the other games, but I'll look into Monster Hunter.

  • Kichigai birthday!!

I've heard good things of Kid Icarus.

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

@Nyktos: Pretty sure you can get a demo. I've heard the demo is pretty awful for new players, though, in that it doesn't give you an introduction to the different elements of gameplay.

Give it to me, I will have no need to ask peeps for info on games!

  • If you don't have it for the PS2/Xbox/PS3 already, get MGS3.

There's a bunch of great DS games, such as the DS Castlevania games.
