  • Ridi, Pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto!

One of the suspects in the Boston Bombing has been killing in a shootout, a police officer also died. The other suspect is on the run and Boston is basically on lockdown.

Sometime last night, there was a robbery at a 7-11, and the robbers looked enough like the recently-released photos of the marathon bombing suspects that the police started going after them.

At some point, an MIT Campus Police officer was shot multiple times, in Cambridge, across the river from Boston.  He died of his wounds in the hospital.

Then I've heard something about shooting heard in Central Square in Cambridge and sometime in Somerville possibly.  But the major action has been (allegedly) a car chase, complete with grenades lobbed, that ended up in Watertown, which is a bit further west of Boston.

There, there has been a firefight and explosives detonated, and one suspect was shot and died in the hospital.  At some point, an MBTA (Boston transit) officer was also injured and is in the hospital, but is alive.

A second suspect is still at large.  A massive manhunt is currently underway.  Boston and many of its suburbs (Watertown, Cambridge, and other places) are on lockdown.

A third "person of interest" is in custody as well.

The suspects have been identified as 19- and 26-year old residents of Cambridge who had lived there for at least several years; they were originally from the Chechnya region in Russia.  Speculation abounds as to their motive. EDIT: THIS HAS BEEN CORRECTED, SEE BELOW

These events are pretty much confirmed to be all related, AND the suspects in these events are indeed the marathon bombers.  As if it wasn't obvious from the fact that this was a car chase with grenades...

    So, Stormtroper...

Who do you support given the paucity of options that do not suck? Are there any reasonable third-party candidates? Anyone not completely insane or obnoxious?

I wonder how @evergreen and @DYRE are doing.

DYRE's last log-in was a few hours ago, but I don't know about Evergreen.

DYRE was around IRC as late as a bit before 8 AM this morning so I know he's fine; it's just that I wonder how his campus is responding and how he's being impacted by it.

Same with Evergreen except I haven't heard from him.

    So

a small detail has come up

I don't have a work permit and my means of getting one are apparently out of reach if my mom keeps doing this whole "Sending me pictures of me instead of actually answering to my questions" method of communication.

    so...yay for that

  • Who do you support given the paucity of options that do not suck?

Capriles, of course. The only thing I have against him is that he didn't really say much about how he'd govern (maybe he did during the last elections, I wasn't paying attention), oh yeah, and the thing with raiding a Cuban embassy during the coup 11 years ago. But hey, he has experience, leadership, and speaks of national unity without insulting a huge proportion of the population.

Plus, he already saved us once, chavists are trying to forcibly impose their ideology on what's now known is half the population, imagine what would've happened if he hadn't been a candidate (as many thought) and Maduro had gotten the overwhelming majority he was looking for.

(Although I want to take back what I said about him being my personal hero. That's silly.)

Meanwhile, the other officialists who seemed reasonable demonstrated to be ruthless thugs, and really, having a non-chavist president would in itself bring some much needed separation of powers.

Are there any reasonable third-party candidates? Anyone not completely insane or obnoxious?

There's this candidate who's famous for, after being unable to answer during interview what her economic policies would be, asking the interviewer for "a little bit of help" on the question. My joke votes go to her.

There's also two or three other people whose names I don't know.

I am not a Venezuelan, so take everything that I say here with a shaker's worth of salt, but Capriles strikes me as just a little dodgy himself. Surely he's not even in the same ballpark as Maduro, who is a complete and utter loon, but I always get wary when politicians start talking about "market-friendly" economics. Seriously, the American economic system is not the example that you want your country following.

It's relative, "market-friendly" here could easily mean "not downright hostile to private enterprises". For whatever it's worth, on the last elections Capriles said he'd follow Lula's model (this must've backfired when Lula supported Maduro).

According to the Boston Globe, the Kyrgyz state news agency has confirmed that the two are natives of Kyrgyzstan.

It is not clear that he is even from Chechnya.

So, all that speculation about Chechen-Russian relations?  Yeah, put that on ice, people.

Someone on Twitter claims that at the UMass Dartmouth campus someone's being dealt with by "men in tactical gear", "at gunpoint".

blegh, everything is getting more frustrating to deal with.

hopefully today's job interview will lead to a job i can actually do without a work permit (It's acting bullshit, so...yeah)

The MIT Police officer who was killed is Sean Collier, a 26-year-old who graduated from Salem State with a degree in criminal justice.  He was a resident of Somerville.

The MBTA officer who was injured is Richard H. Donahue, Jr., who is a 33-year-old father.  He is currently in stable condition.

Apparently, both of them graduated from the same police academy class.

    Has friends besides tanks now

This has been a surreal day for me. Not to the same disturbing degree as being in the same dorm as one of the Boston marathon bombers (though my stepbro is also in Boston and has been lying low), but in my Spanish class, people were put into groups to put on fake news program presentations on different Spanish speaking countries, and my group got Venezuela, with a four-day-old report from El Pais Internacional of Maduro winning the election. Needless to say, I'll be looking at Stormtroper's posts again since that article is a few days old. It was interesting talking to people in the class about what's going on over there.

And on a lighter note, I ended up eating lunch with a new friend/project partner from the Spanish class since my Philosophy class was cancelled (the prof has shingles), found more writing majors, and one of them mentioned John Barth. When I get onto Goodreads today, I'm very quickly pointed towards Chimera.

And my younger cousin just gave birth to a son today. Still feel weird about her having a kid already, but she and her boyfriend are legitimately really excited for this, so I can sort of rest assured knowing he'll be loved.

Weird day, but not bad for me, and I consider myself lucky for that. I hope that things going on elsewhere get better soon.

  • I'm fine. There is plenty of reassurance by campus authorities that we're not in any danger. Obviously because of the lockdown, I had to scrap plans to go on a fun outing to an abandoned psychiatric hospital far outside the lockdown zone because my friend with car lives off-campus. I'm thinking I should step outside to get some fresh air at some point...this is considered safe to do, and I'm getting awfully antsy trying to write this silly little architecture paper on Louis Kahn's Yale Center for British Art...

  • If you were heading to the one I think you were, then I'd like to ask you to write a post about your trip if you ever manager to go. If you do, I'll totally lost pictures of the time my friends and I got locked on the roof of an abandoned factory. :)
  • This was going to be my second trip. I could try to direct you to some pictures from my first. But at this point I'm not even sure I'll have time to go at all ever unless...well, I don't even know. I don't want to speculate too much.

It seemed like a viable option even after the MIT shooting but once Watertown went nuts, I knew that was it for everything.

  • Needless to say, I'll be looking at Stormtroper's posts again since that article is a few days old. It was interesting talking to people in the class about what's going on over there.

    lolz I've become a journalist.

Also, this happened at Maduro's swearing in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AACp9v_-d4k

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    That looks amusing.

Can you please explain what happened so that I will no longer find it amusing but instead find it worrisome that it's happening in real life?

  • It's what it looks like. Someone broke in during his swearing in, took his microphone and shouted some stuff. ("Nicolas! My name is Yendrick! [Some other stuff that's hard to understand]")

Whether that's funny or worrisome depends on what they decide to do with him.

    IT'S OVER

    56s

CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

    It is OVER!

Epic props to all the Boston-area police departments!

Special honor, and condolences, to the MIT Campus Police.  May Officer Sean Collier, as well as Martin Richard, Lingzi Lu, and Krystle Campbell, rest in peace, with the satisfaction that the situation has been resolved, and finally resolved very elegantly, no less.

  • I love how real life tends to throw out little ironic coincidences every now and then.

Search the entirety of Watertown to find a suspect. Where does he end up? In a boat.

  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human

I see the locals took a good hard look at that m*****f***ing boat.
