"Women are superior to men. In every way, shape, and form." [sic]

edited 2011-09-01 03:44:47 in General

I've been told this twice now, by two of my closest friends. (of which you may or may not know, but I will not share their names). Both of whom are male... is it ok for me to be bugged by this? I'd like to think that they are wrong, that both men and women have their advantaged that are not equivocal to the other. Of course, there are some things that don't help my case...

Now, I know most people don't hold this view, and that it probably has to do with my own background that some of my friends think this way. (or, to be more precise, that I have friends that think this way).

But it's comparing an apple to an orange! Apples are tougher, and oranges are sweeter! There are certain things that an apple can be made into that an orange is just no good for! And the same goes the other way too! >x<

  • When you get down to it, apples and oranges are both fruits. Just like males and females are both people.

Each should be individually judged on their own merits. Both fruits and people can be really rotten or really wonderful.

    They're just pussy-whipped.
  • But what if you stumble upon a very tough orange and a shockingly sweet apple, hmm?

    But seriously, seconding Waltzy.
  • thats my thoughts on it too...

they probably have their reasons for thinking this say, but it just bugs me that they do. I should naturally be offended as a guy, right?

  • Thirding Alex.

The only reason I can think they'd say something like that, is they've bought into stupid man-guilt lauded onto them by Feminists.
  • I should make a note here, to help define what it is that bugs me about it.

both of my friends are guys.

they also happen to be g.i.r.l.(s)

when I asked them why they chose to behave that way. (not accusing, just curious as to why, because they really are my best friends, and It doesn't bother me at all, really.), that quote was their response.

I dunno... I just dunno... something about that struck me personally... I mean, I'm a guy! I'd like to think I'm a macho guy too?! or at least thats what I try to put off when I'm online. I know that in RL I'm just an ideological dimwit at his computer spouting quotes from his favorite shows... so to say that to me was really offensive...

I dunno, I think I'm getting too worked up over it?! People are entitled to their own opinions. It's my opinion that they are idiots, so there. we can coexist now.

  • The 2 people described are idiots, simple as that.

Especially since they're going into hyperbole, which really make them look ignorant.

Anyway, I tend to think a lot of what are considered to be psychological differences between men and women are more influenced by nurture than nature, and even then probably exaggerated. Not that there aren't differences, considering the different scores the sexes tend to get on standardized tests and whatnot. And then testosterone and estrogen have some sort of role with the brain.

I also don't think it's unreasonable to say that men tend to be stronger, and I don't think it's entirely fair to hold women to the exact same physical standards considering that they're smaller on average, and the extra energy and biomass it takes to grow and maintain a people factory. Of course, I'm not going to ignore that there is a large number of women fitter than me.

Also, nature vs nurture is a false dichotomy due to gene-environment interaction.
  • Nature vs... culture, then?
  • To be honest, it's difficult to explain since I only found out about that recently. But in short, it's accepted that both nature and nurture play a role.

Though in regards to your point on standardized testing, a lot of it is due to girls being told by society that they are inherently less good in mathematics.

  • I guess that could make sense.

That's the thing I find damaging about gender stereotypes. They end up becoming something of a self-fulfilling prophecy that keeps everyone in line regardless of their own individual personality. And really, this affects both boys and girls, so it's not so much an issue of one side persecuting another.
