This father and how he punished his kid

  • If I'm understanding right, you dislike that the punishment came with permanent effects.

But up until that point, the punishments with temporary effects weren't working. The next logical step is to make it have more of an impact or it's not so much a punishment as it is going through the motions.

And it isn't 100% permanent; he's not keeping her from going and getting a job and buying her own laptop. Difficult? Yes, very. Self-inflicted by not heeding warnings? Yes, very.

  • I dunno. I'm just biased because it was a computer, I suppose. I would have at least backed up her data for safekeeping.

  • No rainbow star
^ He might have done that. You never know

I know he probably didn't mean for the video to go viral the way it did, but uploading it to the internet, with the dramatic gesture of shooting the computer just seems to be asking for it. Parenting should happen in private, not be broadcast to the entire world for their amusement. If he did in fact backup any data there might have been on the computer, I don't have a huge problem with him destroying it, though selling it would have been better, if less dramatic. If he didn't, it's a real dick move though, since important files, school-related files, private files etc. could be on there (on the other hand, he might know that she doesn't use it for that kind of stuff).

I don't know, it just seems like the kind of show-off parenting where you hope to be able to settle everything with one huge dramatic act, instead of actual parenting which is something you have too keep up constantly. Besides punishment is the easiest and shallowest form of parenting there is, yes sometimes it has to be done, but it's better if you can avoid it as much as possible in lieu of actually talking with your children. Yes the girl was acting like a stupid bitch, but the father didn't really come of as having the high ground once all was said and done. Instead he seems to have lost his temper, this one event tipping him over the edge, sending him into "justified anger" mode, in which he overreacted to his daughter's words. That kind of tipping-over-the-edge angry moment is not the basis for good parenting. So to me, it's just an example of an overall failed parent-child relationship, one participant alone is rarely to blame in those cases.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

Parenting should happen in private, not be broadcast to the entire world for their amusement.

Take note. He did everything exactly the way his daughter did. He just uploaded it to Youtube because Facebook's video uploading sucks.

  • How is doing exactly what his spoiled daughter did a good thing, though? I don't like using the whole "two wrongs don't make a right" thing, but in this case I don't see how sinking to her level makes him any better.

Also complaining about your parents on Facebook isn't really the same as punishing your child in the most hilariously dramatic way possible and uploading it to YouTube. Honestly, I'm willing to wager that most children have bitched about their parents online and it really isn't that big a deal.
