  • ^^ That's something Moe dantes tended to do, I think.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Dantes tended to do that to everyone who wasn't living in the past, not just gamers.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I live in the past and I got that shit.

You gotta live in *his* past.

    In the eighties, then.

    In Castle Greyskull.

    >Yeah, I get that. I just don't get why people looked to a film critic
who doesn't play games and has no interest in them for an opinion on
    games.

Cause Ebert is not just a critic he's the critic. His expertise being elsewhere doesn't matter as he has a lot of fame, influence, and clout, therefore his opinion on anything matters more.
  • You can change. You can.
Yeah, I get that. I just don't get why people looked to a film critic who doesn't play games and has no interest in them for an opinion on games.

Because lolvalidation, which ties into the persecution complex mentioned above. Also, Ebert is a very approachable critic.
  • Re Roger Ebert: Who is this person anyway, and why do I hear so much about him?

I hope you're being sarcastic. I mean, if you've watched television or films in your entire life you've heard "Roger Ebert gives it X thumbs up!" ...if you do so with any regularity you've heard it thousands of times.

Exactly. Gamers lost their shit because a film critic didn't care about video games, like they expect (and need) everyone ever to like games.

    Also this.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^ I think it's because they didn't want Ebert encouraging a narrow interpretation of video games.

I was not being sarcastic; I genuinely had not heard of Roger Ebert until I started hanging out around TV Tropes.
  • That's quite some rock you've been living under. Plenty of movie ads reference Ebert in some way.

You keep talking like gamers are some evil monolithic hive mind.

(hint: they are not, and it is not exactly helping your argument)

I rarely watch movies, and pretty much never read reviews or pay attention to ads.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
This topic honestly strikes me as self-advertisement more than sincere, considered criticism.
  • You can change. You can.
Honestly, I don't see anything wrong in looking for Ebert's opinion. Hell, I don't see anything wrong in disagreeing with his opinion. It's when you act like a five year old because some guy who doesn't play videogames...well, doesn't play videogames and thus doesn't appreciate them when you should check your attitude.

I do think Ebert kinda overstepped his line and I maybe fuzzy here, but I do remember his article being quite condescending and snide (Also, he talked a lot about gaming being only a competition, which is not entirely accurate. At least, there are a lot of games which de emphasize the competetive factor)

^^Self advertisement for what? That gamers keep pissing me off in the news? :p

^^^You don't have to watch movies, read reviews or pay attention to ads either, he's just referenced freaking everywhere. He's been doing this for like, forty or fifty years I think, pretty much every single movie to hit theaters and then some.

So he never noticed him before. Why is this a big deal?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Well, apparently I fell through the cracks in his coverage. :P

Considering that I have almost never sought out TV shows or movies to any non-negligible extent to watch, and I didn't start chatting about these things with friends until I got to college, and even then this topic was rare among my friends and me (topics tended to be news, gaming, politics, school and dorm politics, music, music theory, game design, internet memes, computer usage, etc....just not TV shows or movies)...yeah.
  • edited 2011-12-09 22:12:13
It's not a big deal, it's just remarkable, hence I am able to remark upon it! :D

I don't know who almost any figure in the music world is but that is because I'm a total weirdo who doesn't listen to music.

I would say that games contain art, like musical scores and character designs, but the gameplay itself is more just a tool for viewing said art.
  • ^ like Okami?

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
So here's my opinion on the whole Ebert-vidya thing.

    1)Dude's obviously wrong. Don't sweat.
2)Dude's dying and doesn't care if he's wrong or not. Don't sweat.
3)Dude retracted it. Don't sweat it.
4)This would be a lot more worrying if Shigeru Miyamoto or Hideo Kojima said something. Ebert has no effect on the medium.
  • Incidentally, here's what Kojima had to say:

"The thing is, art is something that radiates the artist, the person who creates that piece of art. If 100 people walk by and a single person is captivated by whatever that piece radiates, it's art. But videogames aren't trying to capture one person. A videogame should make sure that all 100 people that play that game should enjoy the service provided by that videogame. It's something of a service. It's not art. But I guess the way of providing service with that videogame is an artistic style, a form of art."

  • You can change. You can.

but gameplay is just one aspect of games. And even though it is the major and most defining aspect of videogames, it is hardly the only one. hell, under this logic, i can safely say that movies are not art and they just contain art aspects, like narrative, photography and music.

Since when does a movie, a song, etc. try to capture just one person in this good ol' capitalist world?
  • I'd never heard of Roger Ebert till MovieBob mentioned him in Game Overthinker.
  • edited 2011-12-10 12:27:37
And other people never heard of him until Nostalgiacritic's review of Siskel & Ebert's old show and praised them as his biggest inspiration. Even people I know who have utterly never watched a movie, ever, know who Roger Ebert is >:(

What is WRONG with everyone?! It's as if some human beings were somehow born more recently than I was...but that's impossible, I'M JUST A KID.

Do you watch a lot of movies, frequent a lot of media discussion sites for movies, popular fiction, or gaming, including news sites and review sites, or talk to people a lot about this?

And yeah, I think the first time I heard of Ebert's name was in combination with Siskel.

That said, I didn't really care for it so I didn't investigate further.
  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
I didn't hear about Ebert until 2009, sorry, scythemantis, I am a failure of a man because I grew up in panama with no internet access or cable tv.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
And other people never heard of Kierkegaard until Yahtzee's review Batman: Arkham City mentioned himand praised him. Even people I know who have utterly never read a philosophy book, ever, know who Soren Kierkegaard is >:(

This is kinda reminding me of two of my suitemates freshman year, who insisted that everyone in the world knew where their little game was from.  They were talking about this little mindvirus-like game where if you fart, you have to say "safety", or else someone can say "doorknob" and you have to touch a doorknob or other people get to punch you (albeit lightly) in the shoulder until you've touched a doorknob.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Never heard of him either.
However he is an American film critic and I'm from the UK and not really a huge film buff.
