And I do like the format.
I know people hate the "it gets better" claim, but it's very true for Homestuck.
I also don't get why people complain about things not being "as funny as they think". Humor doesn't have an objective existence, and I don't think the comic points towards all its jokes and says gee look how funny I am. If you didn't think it's funny, it's just not to your taste.

You're basically asking if you should keep reading it even if the first part seems slow. The answer is yes.
Sorry to say that you're going to get that as an honest response, though I hear some people day it becomes better at Act 2 and others at Act 4. No way I'm giving guarantees, since you know what you like better than I can.
The ending flash of act 2 was what really hooked me, though.
Return to the Core), and that was after taking taking nearly 2 weeks to read hivebent because it was so boring, but Act 6 is making everything worth it. I've laughed out loud more in the past month than I have in the past almost-year.
I'm not super annoyed with it yet, but I do kind of really want to get back and see what's going on with the human characters.
