  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I keep misreading this thread as "Angus Young Puts Van Halen In Their Anus."

    You needed to know this.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    Thanks Forz.

    I didn't need to sleep.

    Anytime, bro.

I'll agree that Classic rock is ill-defined. It also leads to the whole 'Zeppelin is not metal' syndrome, but the sentiment behind the term dad rock annoys me.

From what I understand, the term was born out of kids in YT going all "Lol, I'm 14 and I listen to my dad's rock. better than that popshit!!!111"

not sure if that is comforting.
  • Likes cheesecake unironically.
Guys, what are you even talking about? Both AC/DC and Van Halen suck completely. Just as any of this old crap. Listen to some real music like Linkin Park or Tokio Hotel.

    I feel dirty.

Seriously, I don't think I ever heard something of Van Halen (maybe I heard something sometime without knowing that it's Van Halen), so I can't judge it. But I 'm rather fond of AC/DC, although I have to admit that I haven't heard very much of them, and don't understand how one could think that their songs sound the same.

Before I read this thread, I didn't even know the term "dadrock". But I think it sounds stupid and apparently the concept behind it is stupid, which would be rather appropriate because the word sounds stupid.
  • ^ I always thought of dadrock as being more modern bands who slavishly imitated the classics without attempting to do anything original and usually not as well as the older bands had anyway. Oasis were constantly being accused of falling into this category, for instance.

I wouldn't regard it as a term you'd apply to AC/DC or Van Halen, even though lots of dads like them. For what it's worth, my Dad favours the Kinks, the (pre-hippie) Beatles and the Stones, among others.

Also for what it's worth, AC/DC are one of the best hard rock bands ever. I haven't heard enough Van Halen to really comment on them.

erm, the term is supposed to mock classic rock in all its form. it's not supposed to be about music actual dads listen to.

"Oasis were constantly being accused of falling into this category, for instance"

Oh God. Oasis is even worse than AC/DC, in my opinion.
  • You can change. You can.
Do you like anything good, damnit >:|

(I don't really like Oasis, regardless of Champagne Supernova >.>)
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Oh god. Oasis. When people told me they were like the Beatles I then assumed I didn't like the Beatles.

Then I listened to the Beatles.
  • You can change. You can.
    wait

people compared oasis to the beatles

    mang

    the 90s sucked
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Seriously. It happens all the time.
  • You can change. You can.
    not on my front.

    i guess i'm like...really lucky.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
I haven't seen the sentiment expressed, thankfully. I'd have been pretty perturbed since, you know, The Beatles are actually good.
  • You can change. You can.
I do think they borrow from The Beatles. But that's like saying that just because you quote Woody Allen, you're as funny as Woody Allen.

shit doesn't work that way, son.
  • I was never a huge fan of Oasis at the time, partly because they seemed such copyists. Actually, my favourite of theirs is Half A World Away, which is nothing like most of their songs.

In the 90s, in Britain, there was an awful lot of lazy ripping-off of the classic British bands of the 60s. However, there were also bands like Pulp or Suede who actually were trying to do something new.
