Do you even know the composer?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Honestly, this argument comes to mind with one question.

"Which band wrote Hot For Teacher?"
  • $80+ per session
If I did, I could probably have found it by now!

    >Hot for teacher

    oh, so AC/DC is better?

but seriously, of all Van Halen songs...you had to pick the most boringly vanilla of them? Not even Jump? Panama? Or "Ain't Talking Bout Love"?

    for shame.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^^^I will stab you.

Those are all great songs, but Hot For Teacher is one of my favorite songs ever, though definitely not their most technically impressive.

Listen to that opening guitar and call that 'vanilla'.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
More like listen to that rollicking drum solo at the beginning.

I'd agree with him that "Jump" is boring, but "Hot For Teacher" is kickass.

Hell, listen to any bit of the song.

I'll agree the drums are great, but the guitar is what gets my blood flowing.

Also, I'm now tempted to make a K-On AMV to Hot for Teacher.

If only I could find good freeware that let you work with .MKV

^^ You think "Hot For Teacher" is boring and vanilla?

For a Van Halen song, yes. But that's because Eddie can do far more unique and fun than that.

Listen to that opening guitar and call that 'vanilla'.

I...actually was thinking of that. It's not a particularly...Van Halenish riff, if that makes sense. The blues scale spliced in makes it sound like any run of the mill Aerosmith 70s song. Just with more distortion and palm muting.

More like listen to that rollicking drum solo at the beginning.

bah, i say. It's the kind of annoying drumming that just goes on tangents on its own with no beat and just being super fast.

I'd agree with him that "Jump" is boring, but "Hot For Teacher" is kickass.

urm, i never said that Jump is boring. It's a fun song, with a not terribad synthline

that makes it better than any song with a synth out there.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
They both need a bit more dubstep personally.
    :D

    Well just Youtube it really.
Although the quality will vary greatly.
    Edit:
    Grabbed one:

. . . You know, I think AC/DC might actually be salvageable with a drop or two and some techno sounds.

"bah, i say. It's the kind of annoying drumming that just goes on tangents on its own with no beat and just being super fast."

Whaaaa? How is it tangential? It sets the tone for the entire song with its bounciness. Maybe the floor tom bit at the beginning, but once the bass comes in, it's on.
  • $80+ per session
This whole thread could use some more dubstep.

OK, you know what, you're almost making me want to give that song a second chance after I decided to never pick it up again.

    Let's see if you're right.
  • @OP:

    >implying Van Halen isn't just as shitty as AC/DC

They at least have a few songs I can bear to listen to. "Hot For Teacher" in particular.

The eighties are dadrock? Most of the people who listened to it when it was on the charts are only slightly older than me.

Also, you're back on notice Dyre.

    The eighties are dadrock?

dadrock is just a mocking name for classic rock, not just to rock that your dad or granddad listened to.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
That makes sense since nobody says it about The Kinks or the Beatles or rock bands that actually were around when our dads were actively listening to the radios.

    They don't?
  • You can change. You can.
I hear it a lot about the beatles and the stones. specially the stones.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I dunno how "classic rock" the 80s are, apart from a small amount of well-known bands like AC/DC and Guns 'n' Roses (which was a direct attempt at reviving the late 60s/70s sound). Even Van Halen exists outside the rawness and bloodstained sound of the era. I listen to Black Sabbath, Led Zepl, AC/DC, Deep Purple, ect. and I feel the flaws in the production and the limitations of amps bring it something powerful and bestial, like those records are constantly pushing their limits. When the 80s are in full swing, even distorted guitars sound kind of "clean" to me, but I guess it isn't helped that a lot of bands went with clearer harmonies over the experimental approach that characterises the birth of hard rock.

Anyway, I like AC/DC because they're very simple, very pure hard rock. And that's surprisingly difficult to find. A lot of modern rock bands don't go the distance to have a hard-hitting sound, and most either don't have solos or can't compose an effective one. AC/DC did all these things very simply and ingeniously. Like most rock bands of their era, they took the basics from blues music, turned the volume up and cleared out the harmony. Pretty much all of AC/DC's riffs are slow or medium-tempo blues phrasing with open-string power chords thrown in. Their solos are pure uptempo blues, and they even take it further than most other rock bands of the era by sometimes finishing a solo with a major pentatonic phrase.

Van Halen's contribution to metal guitar was pretty neat, but ultimately not that overwhelmingly awesome. Tapping's application is pretty context-sensitive. It's a good technique to know, but other guitarists have done better for lead guitar in the context of rock. Jason Becker, Marty Friedman and Yngwie Malmsteen have all done brilliant things with sweep picking and conventional-technique phrasing. For instance, Marty Friedman often uses phrasing drawn from Asian scales, and combines that with bending outside notes into the harmony. It's not as "cool" or "impressive" as tapping, perhaps, but it's a lot more interesting from a compositional standpoint. Most tapping deals with arpeggios, after all, and if you just want pure shred, sweep picking is a better port of call than tapping.

But honestly, the most impressive guys in the history of hard rock/metal are probably Iron Maiden. No weird scales, no secret master techniques -- just creativity, technical skill and a great sense of dynamic songwriting.

I'll agree with the last part. Maiden's my favorite band for a reason.

In any case, I find AC/DC's sound incredibly boring. I find nothing in their music that I can't find done better or with more heart in other bands. Van Halen however has a distinctive and unique sound and genuinely memorable melodies.

As for dadrock, I've only heard it in disparaging context and quite frankly it's a really stupid idea. "Oh old people like this. I guess I can't." Seriously, the term dadrock makes me think of some teenage bitch jacking off to Avenged Sevenfold.
  • You can change. You can.
I use it and I love classic rock. Mostly because, let's face it, classic rock is the most undefinable thing ever.

    Like

    fo' sure

Also, I'd question Malmsteem's influence because let's face it, a guy who only uses minor harmonies at hyper speed is as innovative as Robbie Krieger (IE Not really)

not to mention that he kinda sucks, dude.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I'll agree that Classic rock is ill-defined. It also leads to the whole 'Zeppelin is not metal' syndrome, but the sentiment behind the term dad rock annoys me.
