    I feel more or less the same as Juan about the two endings, re:pessimism/optimism.  Though, I think the original's ending was a better ending to the series in a number of ways.

    Well, it's obvious that going on by what we're watching, we're barely watching the original characters so much as Shinji's perception and understanding of them, which is why they act so distant when they were never distant at all during the show. Well, they were, but as always, it's complicated.

    EoE is fairly optimistic, yes...

    ... until you remember that the entire world's ecosystem is probably irreparably shattered, and all traces of civilization are gone, meaning that yes, you can come back, but you really shouldn't.

    Not to mention that by the end of the series finale everyone's alive. Something that EoE throughly denies, so they can't be real. Of course, that's if you believe that EoE isn't just an alternate ending.

    EoE said everyone got tang'd, which means that everyone's souls can all reach each others'.  If you observe ep 26 you'll notice that you have people talking without their mouths moving.  One could infer that this is their souls reaching out to Shinji's soul and telling him that the world isn't so bad after all.  The scene is clearly all in his mind anyway.
