    @Juan: I found her more annoying than Shinji, actually. Her initial peppiness was highly irritating, especially since I probably would have reacted as awkwardly as Shinji, at least as far as the small talk goes. And then her guilting and strong arming him into keeping up the fight, under the pretense of him having a choice, and being surprised when he didn't want to fight, was even worse. At least with Shinji, I can understand that a mentally unhealthy fourteen-year-old is hardly an ideal hero, and that's the point, but I can't find Misato's excuse. Perhaps I'm misremembering things.

    Thing is, I don't really like any of the characters so far, at least not as people; I just enjoy the drama.

    I think of her as....well, if you forgive the comparison, Shinji's Yoko. AKA, a sorta motherly figure who's trying to encourage Shinji into growing up. And who Shinji doesn't really see as a motherly figure.

    Also, Misato's reason to force Shinji to fight comes a lot later, when you discover why they chose Shinji in the first place.

    But I don't think Rebuild tackles that.

    And Rei has to be 14. She's shinji's love interest. It'd be creepy if she was older. Well, creepier. As the whole point of her fanservice is to be, you know, creepy and cringeworthy.

    Don't forget Misato counts a Shinji love-interest too. Just sayin'.

    I'd say that the point is that they're all flawed damaged people, but who try to be better. It's just that they fail. Until...well, bluh, etc etc spoilers.

    In any case, no it didn't really bug me... at least not until there were signs Misato reciprocated.

    I mean it's pretty natural for a fourteen-year-old boy to have a crush on a cheerful, sexy, twentysomething woman who isn't fully grown up.

    I'm aware. But the horrible personalities have yet to be outweighed by their value as characters, for me.

    I often thought that Misato didn't reciprocate so much as was incredibly incredibly lonely after youknowwho died.

    Misato's loneliness was definitely a factor, but I still think she found herself attached to Shinji.

    I would say that yeah, that is true, but I wouldn't say that's really love. Dunno, maybe it's just me.

    I do admit I was kinda moved by it, even if it was sick and twisted.

    The only time Rei ever managed to be even a little bit creepy (from the material I've seen, so not counting any of Rebuild) was in the later parts of End of Evangelion.  Anno failed pretty spectacularly otherwise.

    ^^I think that it's honestly not all that bad considering the context. I mean, Earth's gotta be repopulated. When the planet starts to get a population of 50 billion we'll look at the idea of Euthanasia being wrong as quaint.

    ^That too. Or rather, the only really creepy aspect of her to me is the fans.

    That'd apply if Misato knew what was going to come next. Which she didn't. All she knew is that NERV was on their ass.

    As for Rei, she didn't creep me out, but my point is that she really is unappealing. And seeing how at least 3/4 of the fandom seems to agree with that, I wouldn't say he has failed.

    I think I have the curse of having a high bullshit threshold, I liked the original eva characters, except rei, who was a boring living prop to elementary school me. And is still a prop to me, at least in the original show.

    I've grown fond of her in the original show on rewatch, but she can be incredibly annoying. Specially as the show tends to use her for the whole "Let's use poetry and rambles instead of actual storytelling" scenes the most.

    Watched You Can (Not) Advance. Wow. Thoughts:

    1. Shinji definitely came into his own, and Rei's a bit cooler, too. And newcomer Mari has potential, but is pretty wacky now. Kaji amused me a bit, and I wish he was around more.

    2. Newcomer Asuka can eat a dick, though.

    3. I can't wait to see how any new angels could top that last one. The movies are really good at high-stakes action scenes, even if the resolution is consistently underwhelming.

    4. That was part of Gendo's plan? The fuck is wrong with this guy? O-O

    So, yeah, this is quickly becoming one of my favorite anime ever.

    I heard that the d8 angel became an impressive though uncreative shapeshifting geometry-teaching creature.

    Also, I find Rei creepy through the main series too.  It's a combination of how she never smiles or does anything other than a dour expression, as well as her extremely unusually barren apartment, and then the aquarium.

    End of Evangelion is a pretty good ending for the series. Also, I really like how it's optimistic if you pay attention. Then again, I thought the original series' ending was rather pessimistic if you paid attention, so. >.>

    Like, I prolly wouldn't have realized all that Rei-plotness if I hadn't known ahead of time.
