"X is a bad -something" "Not when it came out!"

I've been thinking about this in regards to Goldeneye. Make no mistakes. Goldeneye is a shitty game. It has loose controls, is somewhat obtuse, and just plays clunkily. I've heard many people--including those who played Goldeneye when it came out and loved it--say this. However, they always append "But it was revolutionary when it came out!" Why does what matter? It still sucks compared to today's games. There is no such thing as a Grandfather Clause. Some games do stand the test of time--Super Mario 64, for example, is a good game even when stacked up against today's games. Goldeneye isn't. You could replace "Goldeneye" with pratically anything that is overrated and get the same effect.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Mario 64 had loose controls and played clunkily too.

Overall it matters as it revolutionised/developed/popularised the genre.
  • You can change. You can.
    > Implying Goldeneye is not as fun as it was in its time.

    /thread
  • Yeah, but Super Mario 64 was actually playable.
  • While I understand your point, it is only fair to account for when it came out. There's a huge difference between something that was awesome when it was released before becoming horribly dated, and something that just sucked all along.

At the same time, it's not really an excuse considering there are plenty of old games that are still pretty awesome. Both sides have valid points.

    Kichigai birthday!!
    Perfect Dark is better anyway.

But I don't think Goldeneye is a bad as you put it,though it hasn't aged that well
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Goldeneye might be dated, but it's far from unplayable.
  • ʍɥɐʇ po ʎon ɔɐll ɐ ɾoʞǝ ʍıʇɥonʇ ɐ dnuɔɥlıuǝ
    >Goldeneye
    >Unplayable

    Uh, no
  • Compared to modern day games, it is unplayable.
  • You can change. You can.
It should be mentioned that quality is not retroactively variable.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    ^^
    In what ways?

You run forwards prexx button to shoot, press other to reload etc.
It plays like nearly every modern fps but less graphically intense.
  • It's been a while since I played it, but I remember the game just moving as smoothly as it should. It was decent. But that was it.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Decent =/= unplayable
  • Decent =/= unplayable
  • ʍɥɐʇ po ʎon ɔɐll ɐ ɾoʞǝ ʍıʇɥonʇ ɐ dnuɔɥlıuǝ
Sooo it's not unplayable. It's not even bad, it's decent.

...stick with a point and defend it please
  • I remember GoldenI

Had a lot of fun with it.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
stick with a point and defend it please

This so much.  Can you please try to just say what you mean from the beginning so you don't have to keep backpedalling?
  • "Decent" =/= Good
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Perfect Dark was better.

Neither are unplayable, both are kinda clunky by modern standards. Both are well-loved enough to earn remakes, though, which says a lot.
  • ʍɥɐʇ po ʎon ɔɐll ɐ ɾoʞǝ ʍıʇɥonʇ ɐ dnuɔɥlıuǝ
YOU CALLED IT A SHITTY GAME

    DECENT =/= SHITTY

    Make. Up. Your. Mind.
  • What is it this thread even about? Golden Eye and Mario 64 being dated games that served their purpose?

    Or what.

You said it was a shitty game.  You said it was unplayable.

Neither of those fit under "decent".

Please try to be more consistent.

    so many ninjas
  • They're somethin' else.
Chagen, don't try and weasel your way out of the fact that you're objectively wrong ;P
  • Half-Life is tedious nowadays.
  • Doesn't change the fact that it bored me rather quickly.

I mean, at least COD keeps my interest.

ʍɥɐʇ po ʎon ɔɐll ɐ ɾoʞǝ ʍıʇɥonʇ ɐ dnuɔɥlıuǝ
It's not the fact he's objectively wrong, he's just not defending his points well or with any sense of consistency. That's all I want

Edit: don't change the fucking subject
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Chagen, whenever someone offers you constructive criticism, you just ignore it.  That's not a great policy in life.

You make threads to talk about stuff, and then refuse to play ball when people try to debate about it with you.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Compared to modern day games, it is unplayable
Unplayable is an absolute, not a comparative. If something has ever been successfully played, it cannot, by definition, be unplayable.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Also, CoD is a poor comparison. It's arguably the first example of a truly "modern" FPS, having codified the most popular features associated with the genre as it stands.
