  • Chagen... it is called a Pavement because it is paved. It is made of paving stones.  It is still called a pavement if it is paved, irrespective of whether it is by the side of the road or not.  If it is made of something else then it is called what it is made of.... or just called the path.  This is sensible.

What is not sensible is calling it a "sidewalk" when one can do many MANY things besides walk on it, and one does it upright and forwards, not sideways, nor on your side, nor any such similar nonsense. Nothing about the term "sidewalk" is even remotely sensible.
  • The metric system is easier, but at this point sheer inertia is preventing us from changing it.
  • You can change. You can.

It's at the SIDE of the ROAD.

Um, to us, the road is the pavement. Because, you know, it's paved. The sidewalk is at the side of the road.

It's not called pavement, it's called Asphault. pavement is in parking lots.
  • We call it pavement down here in Texas.
  • Metric system is roughly forty BILLION times better than imperial because it actually makes a bit of bloomin sense!
  • Life doesn't make sense.

  • Except life DOES make sense. Also, what game is that GIF from?

    You can change. You can.
Life doesn't make sense. Science, however, does.

^Nope. Car is way too modern.
  • Sweet. I was planning on getting that at some point, maybe.

EDIT: I didn't read correctly or think correctly, but someone is inevitably going to have seen my post in the 10 seconds before I edited it and have replied to it.
  • Pretty that's Saints Row 3.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
The road isn't paved it's tarmacked, the pavement is paved with paving slabs. :D

  • "Tarmacked"?

    We use "paved" over here.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
We do, but "paved" is technically inaccurate.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Also just to chime in metric is so much better due to the ease of conversion between units as the linked picture earlier in the thread showed.

    Same way fishermen brag.

    "It's about this big! Really!"

What is up with 'hard' cider?
  • Well, if it's hard. I'd assume it's cock was up.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    That make so little sense.

I feel the idea of 'hard' cider silly as it seems to be only in the US that you have it, whereas elsewhere cider is automatically alcoholic, non alcoholic cider is apple juice :p

    [tɕagɛn]
We have apple juice as well. I think cider is always alcoholic here too the hard stuff is simply more alcoholic. Never mind, we have an entirely different kind.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^No, I've definitely had non-alcoholic cider before and it was just called "Cider." It didn't taste quite like apple juice.

    RE-ANIMATOR
"It's at the SIDE of the ROAD."

Should I rename my ears to "Sidelistens" then?
Should I rename cutlery to "Sideprods"?
Ooh, maybe my pockets should be "Sideputstuffins"?

    No. Just NO.

"Um, to us, the road is the pavement. Because, you know, it's paved. The sidewalk is at the side of the road."

Fortunately, others have covered this, so I don't have to explain to you how entirely wrong that is.
That said, I'm aware that roads over in america can be made of cracked concrete with tufts of grass growing in it rather than tarmac (freg knows why)... BUT it still isn't paved.

*Drinks a can of Scrumpy Jack and watches all the talk about what is and isn't cider, then looks at his can*

    Yup.
    This... is cider.

Sure is Anglocentric up in here

Sure is Linguistic Prescriptivist up in here

The term sidewalk apparently dates back to 1739.
