Why are they so vehemently opposed to them?

  • For me it's because i'm legally blind. when I watch something subbed I have a hard time following it without pausing every second. THat isn't to say I won't watch something subbed if I don't have an y other options (Yu-Gi-Oh for example is too far butchered to watch dubbed).
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
Their logic is that they watch a movie to watch it, not read it. Ignorant excuse really.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
    Stop generalizing.
  • Oh yes and Downfall i've been meaning to check out Downfall.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
My roommate avoids subs because he has ADHD and can't follow it.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
^Sometimes it is hard to follow. Reading subtitles while trying to watch the action. Sometimes, it's easier with a big screen.
  • Has friends besides tanks now
My friend watches dubs instead of subs because he's a slow reader to the point of basically needing glasses, but finding it difficult to afford them, and doesn't want to have to pause his show too often.
  • When I'm watching a sub the first time, I usually miss something very important that is non - verbal and have to replay the scene multiple times.
  • INUH: I....have ADHD and can read along perfectly...that's not an excuse....
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
There are different levels of ADHD, Chargen.
  • poor eyesight however is glasses don't even do anything in my case. I just can't follow without pausing.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
I'd say for the majority of cases it is the "I paid to watch, not read" excuse.

Or perhaps Americans can't relate to anything from another culture hence all the remakes of foreign shows.
    :p
  • Oh god I HATE Americanitis.
  • Or perhaps Americans can't relate to anything from another culture hence all the remakes of foreign shows.

That's probably due to producers thinking that, not because it's actually the case.  Also you make more profit remaking other people's work than you do re - releasing it.

I'm pretty sure that is the reason, as I doubt that America/American public could really be that intolerant of other cultures.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
^^How does that work? You'd think the networks would be all over that being how the show is already made and all they would have to pay for is the American copyrights.

He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.
I am ADHD and I watch subs whenever I can. But then, I am panamanian.
  • You can change. You can.
I think I prefer dubs when it comes to Anime. but I don't have anything against subs.

And I'm Colombian, so therefore, I'm American. Same goes to you vandro. :P

    That's why I never said I wasn't american.:p
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
  • Oh look, an Americans are dumb thread.

Time to check off the free space on my internet forum bingo card.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Wait... how do you check off a free space? Isn't it already checked off?
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Also, you would think Chagen would like Americans a wee bit more considering he is one.
  • You can change. You can.
^Taking into account you're a jew, I don't understand how could you not understand his selfloathing :P

Anyway, I think it's more of a general, common preference. I mean, here in Colombia, I've yet to meet someone who likes subtitles better than dubs.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
Americans, who call Americans stupid, often think they are better than most Americans.
  • So if you're not an american, you can call them stupid all you want? Sweet!

^^^ Don't ask me about "Jewish guilt." We stole it from Catholics, after all.

    ^ Of course you can!
  • When a movie is live-action, I prefer subtitles. When it's animated, I prefer dubs.

    I like subtitles 'cause I'm a weeaboo.

That said, I also prefer subtitles on things in other languages than Japanese (except, obviously, y'know, English), so... I dunno.
