  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    *offers cygan hugs*
  • Cygan, I just want to let you know that you have my deepest sympathies and that if you ever feel the need to wail on your bitch of a mother with a nail-board I will totally testify on your behalf.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Eh, it's okay. She can't do that to me any more.

I just have to make sure my little brother is taken out of her hands.
  • nail-board is that the best that can be done? make a sword form a lawn-mower blade, a gas tank, and a motorcycle handbreak.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I hope you realize it was meant to be a short, sweet metaphor.
  • Have you reported her to Child Services yet Cygan? Your clear history of abuse should make for a very strong case.

And Tnu: Fallout 3 is NOT a good guide to homemade weaponry. You actually try to make that Shishkebab and all you're gonna do is earn yourself a very fiery ticket straight to the Darwin Awards.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I'm going to do that sometime this week, actually.

Regardless, I didn't mean for this to be a sympathy grab. I meant to offer this up as a counter-argument for Tnu's argument that we have no decency.

Above, I stated my reasons for disapproving of the thread. Does this make me a bad person?
  • No, Chagen's circumstances are clearly far less troublesome than yours. It's perfectly fair for you to disapprove. Just so long as you don't completely disregard that Chagen does have legitimate problems.
  • in essence you were using The Misery Poker Equation. it is evident that you have worse problems but this doesn't mean that Chagen has no right to speek his mind. It may just be a  bias with me as Appeal To Worse Problems is a b it of a Berserk Button for me. Everyone deals with their own problems on their own terms far as I can tell. Chagen's dealing with his. You're dealign with yours. Can't that just be respected?
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
    Which I have acknowledged.

My point is, is it fair for people to say "Deal with it"? Not really.

But is it fair for Chagen to push his problems on to us in turn?

I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Not really, as someone(chagen) is complaining about things in an exaggerated way whilst the things are minor.
You have right to complain about serious household happenings, and so in comparison it looks like Chagen is spoilt.

(Edit: Well apart from beating he mentioned a while ago, that is less minor.)
  • yes in comparison can we just respect that everyone has their own problems wihtout a comparison? Chagen has just as much right to complain as anyone else. What you're saying is "you have no right to complain about anything since you're not the person with the worst life in the world". If we could find a single person with the worst life in the world nobody would be allowed to complain ever by this argument. Complaining is a natural thing people. It is often a helpful coping mechanism. Usually though complaining about small things people are able to suppress and ignore larger issues.
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I don't like to complain about them =/
  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
Chagen has just as much right to complain as anyone else

Nobody else is complaining. That's the problem here.
  • You should. It's cathartic why are people always telling people to shut up around here? venting is perfectly normal and healthy it's kept me going all these years. People need a place to feel safe. To  be able to confide in others and speek their mind without ridicule and harassment. What's the point of a place like IJBM if you get harassed and accused of "attention whoring" and other such things for complaining? This place needs to be a safe haven.
  • They're somethin' else.
We're not telling Chagen he has no right to complain. We're telling him to accurately access his circumstances before he types them out.

    It's a message board.

Not a therapist's haven. Not a place for screwed-up individuals to gather.

    That's why.

    ^ Yes.

Fundamentally, it's not that Chagen is not permitted to complain because other people here have it even worse, but it's an issue of Chagen lacking perspective. I too find it offensive that he elevates relatively minor problems to the level of child abuse.

And Cygan, I wish you well in getting help for your abusive situation.

@Tnu: Other people exist. This isn't some solipsist haven where everyone must submit to you.

There we go. That's what I mean, put into understandy words.

    And thanks.

    Woki mit deim Popo.
I think the is problem Chagen just keeps talking his problems when people like Cygan had far worse to deal with.  It just sound so much like Chagen just being emo.
  • What offended me the most about his allegations was that if his account was taken to be sincere, then he would at least make some effort to get out, yet he kept rejecting any advice to do such a thing. And on a more personal level, his angry letter to his parents reminded me of myself thinking the same thing, which made me realize how much of a spoiled, ungrateful brat I was.
  • The problem with getting out tends to be how society encourages one to stay with their parents and all that shit and due to that runaway kids are stupid we should sent em back to their parents and you know what else.

There's also the "if I run away and they catch me they'll make me go through even worse things" thing that does not escape many people's heads.

    Though I don't think that's Chagen's reason.
  • when people say "he lacks perspective" it just reminds me of Appeal To Worse Problems.
  • They're somethin' else.
How recursive. You're falling back on pointing out fallacies, which is a fallacy itself.

And now I'm doing the same thing.

    Friggin hell, man.
  • wait a second so it's ok for people to use fallacies? Because syaign they're using one invalidates any argument now? God the Fallacy Fallacy make sno sense.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Yes, it is okay for people to use certain fallacies, Tnu, as long as they think when they post.

    They're somethin' else.
And as long as they contribute in turn.

I know it's a little late for this, but wow this thread title is kinky.

Pointing out fallacies is valid as an arguement against an arguement that uses fallacies.  It is not valid to say "the arguement for A is supported by fallacies, therefore A must be false."

Unless the burden of proof is already against A.

@Chagen: We got a Bill of Sale right here.
