    Shonen: For boys
    Kodomo: For children.

    Seinen is specifically young adult males.

    Josei is the equivalent for females.

    Mina is family stuff.

    Seinen manga is distinguished from shōnen, or boys' manga, by having a stronger emphasis on realism. Because of the emphasis on storyline and character development instead of action, some seinen series are often confused with shōjo, or girls' manga.

    -shrug- That's how I see it, at least. Then again, I've never watched another shonen or seinen before, so...

    The terms shounen, seinen, et cetera simply refer to the target audience. Nothing more, nothing less. FMA is more mature than a lot of shounen action series, but it still is one.

    Yeah, but the labels are based on what the actual target audience of the manga/anime/whatever is, not based on the content.  The easiest way to determine the target audience is based on what magazine the manga ran in, since manga magazines usually target one particular demographic.

    that's what the author inteded when he published that in that magazine. Same way someone who writes for DC knows that he can go to main division to write superhero stories that are aimes at the whole family in terms of lewdness and stuff, but with an emphasis for teenage boys, or go to Vertigo and write more profanity-laden, less restrictive stories for people who are older.

    ^ Basically, manga runs in magazines. FMA was published in a shonen magazine.

    The first FMA series follows the manga until roughly halfway through, then goes in a completely different direction, as the manga wasn't finished yet.

    FMA: Brotherhood covers the entire manga.

    Kodomo means children in japan.

    "Kodomo" is a demographic, like shonen or seinen, which is aimed at little kids.

    "Kodomo no Jikan" is a series which roughly translates to "Children's Time" (I think), but it is not a Kodomo series.
