    They aren't cutsier-than-usual though.  They're just kind of... moe.  Because it's a show for otaku.

    I don't really think it matters much that they're Hidamari Sketch designs at the point where you have typical magical girl outfits anyway.

    Yeah.... But anyway, even among cutesy styles there is plenty of variety, I find HS to be very ill-suited to portray "seriousness", and many scenes clearly suffered from it.

    Are you sure that's why the scenes suffered and it wasn't because of the show's awkward pacing or inability to make up its mind about what it's even about?  It seems like that bothered me a lot more than the art style.

Unless you meant to say that knowing that Urobochi Gen is the writer is enough to dispel any illusions about the show's true nature. I might have parsed your post incorrectly, or something. I dunno.

    But I see your point. I thought it worked more than well enough, though.

    ^^^ Ooookay, then. It just seemed like poor transitioning. I knew what he was getting at, though. I'm familiar with Urobochi; I've played Saya no Uta. Well, that's it, as far as other works I've partaken of goes, but I might look into his other stuff at some point.

    . . . I remember reading one comment on MyAnimeList where someone said that Kanon had beautiful art, or that it was an example of an especially beautiful anime, or something like that.

    Needless to say, I had a good chuckle.

    But I still plan to watch it.

    Kamichama Karin.  (Danbooru, so the ads are NSFW)

    Even the DVD version is still kind of bad, and it's a huge improvement from the TV version.

    And every episode was like that...

    I think Kanon has quite nice art, until it hits the QUALITY parts.

    Not the Toei animation though. Ughh. Couldn't even see that after I watched the 2006(?) version.

    Another artstlye that bugs me is Hisashi Hirai's. It doesn't even bother changing a single bit from series to series, which means every crappy series that has his art slapped on (SEED, Fafner) makes the good ones (Infinite Ryvius) retroactively worse for newcomers.

    ^^Dude, just watch the sub.  If it gets licensed, it'll still be a long time until the dub is released

    I don't wanna watch the subs because then I'll get used to the Japanese voices....

    And really, no matter how good the acting is, any dramatic scene isn't as.....dramatic when you're reading boring text at the bottom.
