    Sure.
  • It would probobly be better if you used actual Scottish.
  • That is Scottish.
  • sounded like English with a Funetik Aksent.
  • Yes this why I always go with the wonderful theory of if you don't know what you're talking about, keep you're God damned mouth shut.

That language is what is known as "Scottish English", it evolved from the English occupation in Scotland, as a kind of compromise between English itself and Gaelic.
  • interestign the m ore I know thanks for tha tlesson.
  • Kichigai birthday!!

  • There's a difference between a language (German) and a dialect (Scottish English).
  • ^ No. Scottish English IS a language. I'll thank you to keep your mouth shut thank you very much.

    Kichigai birthday!!
^^ Yeah, they are both annoying when spoken around people who don't know them.

    Oh wait you said difference....

Actually, I should be the last one saying this.
  • Conductor: It's understandable to English speakers.

Ergo, it's a dialect. Do note that Linguists disagree on when something is a dialect or a language.

Also, I research languages for fun. If you're so big and bad, then explain to me the difference between an aggluntative and an isolational language.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
Catalan and Gallego are understandable to Spanish speakers and both are languages
  • Then they straddle the dialect/language line.

There's a lot of disagreement as to when that line is crossed.
  • Chagen, I was pointing out that I don't like people insulting my language or culture. Scots is recognised as a language in the UK Census forms.
  • Good for you. But Scots is different from Scottish English.

....Well, wikipedia has different articles for them.
  • Should've gotten an army and a navy.
  • -SIGH- Are you really trying to lecture me on my own culture? The language is called "Scots" or "Scottish English". The dialect is also known as "Scottish English".
  • Well, shit, how was I supposed to know that when I live across an ocean from it birthplace and current place of speaking?

Never mind that giving two different things the same name is kinda ridiculous.

    Calm the fuck down.
  • "Well, shit, how was I supposed to know that when I live across an ocean from it birthplace and current place of speaking?"

I'll quote what I said to Tnu earlier; "Yes this why I always go with the wonderful theory of if you don't know what you're talking about, keep you're God damned mouth shut."

"Never mind that giving two different things the same name is kinda ridiculous."

It was hardly a conscious decision, it's just how things happen.
  • Expecting people to just know this distinction when there is no way to make a logical deduction leading to the conclusion "Scottish English means two different things" is utterly ridiculous.

    Seriously man, U MAD?

    "Calm the fuck down."

Says Chagen. I find that hilarious.

  • You can change. You can.
Expecting people to just know this distinction when there is no way to make a logical deduction leading to the conclusion "Scottish English means two different things" is utterly ridiculous.

But you come here all high and mighty thinking that you're right about something you're not right about. something you're note even knowledgeable about.

Look, when you ask questions before you give lectures, we'll start taking you seriously. Till then, you'll still be the guy who spouts stuff about languages he doesn't even know about.
  • Juan, I personally simply assumed that Scottish English was a dialect of English because it was perfectly understandable to me. That's my subjective opinion on what a dialect should be. Its grammar is nearly the same too. Never mind that it has the word "English" in its name.

If it is a different language, it is, but Conductor flipped the fuck out when I made a small mistake.

I don't care about the Celtic/Germanic UK languages as much as the mainland Europe ones. Simple mistake, jesus.

    You can change. You can.
You made a mistake, true. But nobody here has a problem against that. What we do have a problem against is how you came here with posts like

Good for you. But Scots is different from Scottish English.

     and

Well, shit, how was I supposed to know that when I live across an ocean from it birthplace and current place of speaking?

and expect us to somehow not feel offended.

  • There's also the fact that Wikipedia said that Svots was different from Scottish English. Though, I think that was because they were talking about Scotland's dialect, not the Scottish Languages themselves.
