People who Torrent/Pirate abusively

edited 2011-04-20 07:54:32 in General
We've all torrented stuff, whether it be music, movies, games or software but then you have the people who pirate just for the sake of it.

I've downloaded games but my reasoning was that they were old and can't be bought through simple/cheap ways anymore (Like EarthBound) or games I used to have but lost and want to play again but what really annoys me are the people who torrent games that came out within the last year or hell even last week and their reasoning being that they don't have money, I can understand not having money and wanting to play the game but can you not wait a while, wait for it to drop in price or just get it for Christmas/Birthday. I have a friend who has a friend who's like this, every time I hear about him it's that he's playing some new game he torrented or he's using some emulator for the Wii or PS3. Last game I think I heard him playing was Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for the PC and that was on the day it came out. Are there others like this, people who just can't wait a few months for prices to drop or people who feel the need to torrent EVERYTHING in sight. It kind of reminds me of those people who torrent because they feel they deserve to play the game for free because of some excuse or another.

Whatever happened to the feeling of holding a physical copy of something, I like having the actual thing, playing on emulators is free and fast but it's just not the same.

  • I know a guy who pirates everything, but owns a legit copy of photoshop, box and everything. It is beyond surreal.
  • Guilty as charged.

I do this with Pokemon games (As I will buy them no matter what) and once with Scribblenauts (Glad I did. It showed me not to waste money on it)

Would be nice if games just had online demos =/
  • An online demo would be interested like play the game for 20 minutes or something.

^ Or beat the first level or area, etc. Basically, enough to give the person an idea if they would like it

But you never had any to begin with.
Well, maybe if I was actually able to buy Radiant Historia, Trauma Team, any of the MegaTen games released in the last couple of years, the SRW games, most bullet hell games (and shmups in general), or Chrono Cross without importing them...
  • Well there are good exceptions like if it's a No Export For You type of thing or if you just can't buy it anymore then that's fine but when it's a game you could easily just go to Gamestop for then you don't really have an excuse.

    "Guilty as charged."

    Same.

Although, it would be different IF I ACTUALLY HAD ANY SPENDING MONEY.

Not only that, but it would be a huge gamble buying a game in the assumption that it would run on my computer. But in any case, it is kind of fun.
  • I like turtles.
    I steal
    Only what I can't afford!
    (That's everything!)

    Exactly.

(for some reason I read that in Batman's voice...)
  • I like turtles.
    Adam West?
    Michael Keaton?
    Val Kilmer?
    George Clooney?
    Christian Bale?
    Rino Romano?
    Or Kevin Conroy?

Or some other person who has portrayed him?
  • I use freecorder to, um, "preserve" youtube videos (since the ones I like rarely last), and I tnd to abuse the trial periods on software, but I plan to buy more once I've paid all my current debts.
  • Eh.  Not going to waste money on something I don't know I'll like.

So, torrent stuff first.  If I decide I really like it, I'll consider buying it when I have money.

Though, games are just a waste of money for me, since I never play them for very long before I lose interest.
  • "Radiant Historia, Trauma Team, Chrono Cross"

    Those three have been localized.

  • Yeah, I don't like this too. I don't torrent things that just came out, I almost always only torrent things that would be near impossible to get.

And my computer can't play the latest games at anything higher than 10-15 FPS.....

^^ Wait, 10-15 FPS is BAD!?

I don't torrent stuff, I save rips of it to my computer, host it on a server and upload the torrent file for others.
  • a little muffled
I do this with music, mainly because it'd be expensive as hell to buy as many albums as I download. However, I have resolved to start buying more CDs as well.

Sometimes I torrent anime series, but I do buy them if I really like them most of the time. I also buy anime that I haven't watched before sometimes, if they're cheap and the series interests me. So I feel okay on that record.

Downloading new episodes of TV shows I feel is more justified, since I don't have cable and a lot of the ones I watch don't even air in this country.
  • There is nothing I don't torrent. And I don't care.

^ Child Porn? Murder Fetish Videos? Child Murder Fetish videos? Bad Pop music from the 90's? Shitty Hentai? Movies you will never watch?

    Re topic:

While I do make use of ...unsavory acquisition practices, I do make a point of trying to buy official copies of things, and encourage others to do so.  Especially if they actually have the money to do so.

Come to notice it: I'm currently the ONLY source on all the internet for the term "Spookhouse Lookout" - the name of a boss room in the game Monster Tale.
  • Finding out people are trying to pirate Portal 2 pisses me off. Buy the goddamn game.

But that requires money, and a sense of moral relativity.

And getting out of your house, getting a job, or both.
  • There's nothing moral about paying for a game and then realizing you wasted money because you don't actually ever want to play it.
  • Other games, maybe. Portal 2, you pretty much know what you're in for, that excuse won't fly here.
