Internet culture hubs

I hate the internet. Let me tell you why. :D

4chan - Anarchic and antagonistic. Chews up newbies for fun. On the other hand at least they admit their faults more readily than some of the others on this list. Project Chanology was great once but now I just want to kick Anonymous' shins in. Fucking bunch of irresponsible subversive cocksuckers.

SomethingAwful - A bunch of whiny assholes who feel a need to ACT mature without actually knowing how to BE mature (see also: Anne kissing ass in the PYF thread very quickly after her initial arrival and discovering she couldn't complain openly). Pretty sure they secretly hate everything and only follow a given show/game/etc. in order to feel better by belonging to a trend. Is in the ironic position of being politically liberal as fuck on average while simultaneously accepting a sitewide almost-libertarian mindset of anything-goes-if-it-lets-me-be-a-dick. Manages to be whinier than the social justice warriors they mock. And despite claiming to hate memes they just promote their own obnoxious brand of in-jokes, best embodied by the inane mark-of-shame bullshit people put in the redtext they buy for each other's avatars. By the way, I have an account there. You know the saying "Familiarity breeds contempt"? Yeah.

Reddit - Still haven't forgiven them for the r/jailbait fiasco earlier this year. Oh yeah, individual Redditors can be plenty cool, but that's not going to prevent me from hating the site as a whole. Also, I've grown FUCKING TIRED of rage comics.

Tumblr - HETERO CIS WHITE PRIVELEGE SOCIALISM REBLOG THIS OR YOU'RE A PATRIARCHAL FASCIST STOOGE, RESPECT MY RIGHT TO MY FICTIVE HEADMATE. Also, you totally dig me being an anxious shy social wreck, right? :3 Alternatively: http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2229

Facebook - All other problems with this place seem small in light of their recent decision to insert unskippable, autoplay video ads into the website. Seriously, fuck you Zuckerberg and fuck your couch.

Yahoo! comments - Makes a convincing argument for forced sterilization.

TV Tropes - I don't have to explain this to you IJBM lot, now, do I?

Moral of the story: The internet doesn't make you stupid, but it DOES enable stupid people to not be punished adequately for their actions.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

He says, to a bunch of people who probably use multiple of those :V

One foot in front of the other, every day.

Slacktivist warriors are part of what made me quit Tumblr. Funny thing is, I didn't believe in "reverse racism" (what's the "reverse" about? Racism is racism) until meeting Tumblr's unique brand of social justice. You cannot win if you are a white, heterosexual male. Which is perhaps an appropriate reversal of general social trends, but if you let it be known that you're white, heterosexual and male, you will no doubt get taken to task for being these things.

You express understanding? You pig, you could never understand our suffering. You try to relate it to your own, most similar experience? You asshole, you should speak about the actual issue here.

Tumblr is a place where actual, practical egalitarianism has no voice. There is no unity. There is only Tumblr.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I have a tumblr, but I only go on it to follow Forzare's blog and a bunch of blogs that post pictures I like.

  • a little muffled

Sometimes I think Tumblr and Reddit are in a war to see who can be the shittiest site on the internet.

  • There's a better reason to hate Tumblr: Those fucking gif portrait thingies where all they have is a character moving their head slightly. They're dumb, and I hate them.

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

Dude, Adblock + NoScript + Ghostery = problem solved.

Other than that, I agree completely. Kill all nerds.

  • @Crimson: It's the principle of the thing! That and Instagram and by extension Facebook can't seem to avoid being TOTAL DICKHATS lately.

  • if u do convins fashist akwaint hiz faec w pavment neway jus 2 b sur

I have several Tumblrite friends. When I asked them if they ever came in contact with the infamous tumblr social justice warriors, they just looked at me oddly and said that they are there for the pretentious hipster pics.

    Kill all nerds.

I think that includes everyone here, even you :v

Other than that... I do see what Charlatan's saying. (facebook does suck)

  • Charlatan, long time no see.

And yeah, I dislike most internet communities as well. Even "Internet Culture" annoys the piss out of me, especially memes.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I've been using tumblr for like eight months now, and really the only time I've ever actually come across the stereotypical social warrior type is when one of their posts occasionally shows up on my dashboard with like eight other comments making fun of it.
  • I had to bring up Tumblr because I love Zudak I really do but every time I see him reblog one of Jethro's posts I cringe. A lot. Jethro comes across as the LGTBQ Euro-socialist version of Sam the Eagle to me.

Hell, just the whole culture of REBLOG REBLOG annoys me. Someone I know set up a Q&A Tumblr for her experiences as a transgender person, and you know what? I LIKED IT. You know why? Because it actually puts a human face on a social issue and answers questions instead of trying to guilt trip you over shit coming out of left field.

  • You can change. You can.

Eh, I am fine with Tumblr. It's badly designed, true, but Missing E is a thing.

And there are assholes, but you're going to find those anywhere on the internet. The advantage with Tumblr is that you can easily just follow whoever you want and get rid of the content you don't want to see, which is why it baffles me when people treat it (And Facebook and Twitter, too, for that matter) as if it was a culture hub. I guess you could say there are various sub-cultures and movements going around, but you can easily just go and follow people you are acquainted with/whose work you follow or whatever and you wouldn't be missing on anything.

I can see what you mean about Reddit, SA and the rest because those are sites that actually have an administration and moderation (And can afford to have those too) and while I guess you could make the "control content " argument I made above for those, the thing is that these are sites that supposedly strive for an intelligent discussion environment, rather than "Here, have this thing where you can say whatever you want to and people will say whatever they want about this".

  • Problem with Tumblr isn't asshats in my feed, problem is when people I like start reblogging stupid shit from people I don't like, therefore INDIRECTLY exposing me to it.

It makes me feel conflicted and it ticks me off.

See my mention of Jethro above.

  • Kichigai birthday!!

xD it seems we have a srs case of le russel'd jammies here :DDDDD 100 ml of babby butt aid :D ebin served

  • You can change. You can.

Tumblr savior it. Bam, problem solved.

  • a little muffled

I don't remember Jethro seeming so bad on TVT.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

but what if i don't want to rely on third-party extensions to make a website's experience tolerable to me

    what then, huh????

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!

^^I remember him going out of his way, and twisting people's words, to be offended. Which is something that Tumblr SJWism encourages.

  • "you duck spawn, refined creature, you try to be cynical, yokel, but all that comes out of it is that you're a dunce!!!!! you duck plug!"

Don't remember this Jethro guy. Anyone could describe the dude, if there's more to say than what's already been said?

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

A small but disheartening handful of TVTers have gone SJW.

  • Also he actually went along with a news brief where China said that the U.S. doesn't have a leg to stand on human rights-wise because if its treatment of Africans.

Zudak insists otherwise but I'm growing increasingly certain Jethro hates the U.S., albeit as an institution rather than a nationality.

Still want to tell him to shut the fuck up, though. I'm pissed as Hell at my country too and you don't see me complaining about it HALF as much.

    You can change. You can.

Then don't use the site. - shrug -

But what I mean is that there are solutions to Charlatan's complaints, that's all.

To be honest, though, the only real benefit that comes from using tumblr is that there's a particular social configuration that I, personally, find pretty fullfilling. I'm hardly defending it and if it's not your kinda thing then sure, far be it from me to tell ya what to do with your time, you know.

I don't remember Jethro seeming so bad on TVT.

He's OK until politics discussions come up. And even then, when he actually speaks he's normally OK. It's just that some of the shit he reblogs touches on my issues with the way tumblr approaches social issues. (Namely, the whole "Assume the worst out of the person you're talking to" thing)

I remember him going out of his way, and twisting people's words, to be offended.

I have my own issues with Jethro but this has never been a thing he has ever done.

Nah. It's actually a really great social networking site. Probably one of the best ones out there.

It's just the social networks that have cropped up suck.

He sounds like he'd fit right in GBS.

Pray tell, how does he feel about police officers?

I think it was a gradual thing. Honestly, I stopped paying attention when the vegetarian activism came in.

where China said that the U.S. doesn't have a leg to stand on human rights-wise because if its treatment of Africans.

There's also the whole failure to prosecute war crimes thing, but then again, being wrong in one thing doesn't mean you're not right in another. But that's a topic for another thread...

... I mean, seriously, people. Am I going crazy here, has nobody else noticed the crime against mankind that those gifs are?

  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

I've never had the (dis?)pleasure of speaking with Jethro, so I don't know where to stand here. However, I think it's best if we avoid making disparaging comments behind people's backs in general. If you have a complaint about Jethro's behaviour, you can by all means express it -- but there's a difference between discussing it and making insults.

Arguably, Jethro's behaviour may serve as an example of weak internet social justice, but let's keep discussion of him in that context rather than as a matter catharsis.

  • Very well.

Sorta surprised so few people responded to the SomethingAwful comments.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.

I think few people here care enough about SA to respond.

More people use Tumblr, so they might respond.

More people use 4Chan, too, but you were kind of spot-on and everyone knows 4Chan is terrible anyway, so nobody would bother to defend that ever.

^^ Most of the people who actually use SA either admit to its flaws by now or simply aren't on.
