Again, nothing is stopping you from bringing up whatever book you want to talk about. If others don't respond about it oh well.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

The thing is, when people talk about a book I haven't read, the only thing I can really say about is "well, that sure exists. Probably."

  • We are...the Sander's Sons.

    no wait that's dumb

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

I am now far enough into Warbreaker to comment on the plot.

    It's really good.

  • a little muffled

I'm probably going to start that tonight or tomorrow.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Okay, this is going to sound really weird, and I can't say why because spoilers, but I think this book is a metaphor for itself.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

You know you're reading a Sanderson book when people start sciencing magic.

I now picture the character who just did a major exposition dump as wearing a lab coat and nerd glasses.

  • Please someone tell me whether R. Scott Bakker is a genius or a misogynist so I can stop paying attention to debates about it, please.

He is actually a clock work mecha piloted by a colony of tree frogs.
  • It all makes sense now!

So yeah reading Gun Machine now. It's a very Ellis book and pretty fun. I love how simple the premise is that I can explain it in three sentences and everybody gets it. I don't really think it would work too well as a comic because it likes to hover in Tallow's thought processes. Still, the review of it saying Ellis wrote it as a book instead of a comic so the action wouldn't slow down from breakneck made me want to smack somebody.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

does anyone know where I can find a copy of Under The Volcano

  • I'm a damn twisted person
You can get it off Amazon for prices between $5 and $10.
  • yea i make potions if ya know what i mean

Normally I'd say I don't use Amazon but I actually have a gift card for it so nevermind.

Under the Volcano is the sole book on my to-read list and has been for almost two years. I don't read much anymore.

Started Warbreaker last night. Was too tired to read past the prologue but...that was quite a prologue.
  • So I'm re-reading Catcher In The Rye for a class.

I don’t hate Holden like some people seem to. I’m worried this shows some immaturity on my part. I mean sure he's a hypocrite who harshly judges people, but I can't really hold that against him for some reason because he's a teenager, and his heart is in the right place.

  • I'm a damn twisted person
If anything that's a mark of maturity, to try to understand why somebody is a tool and factor that into your assessment of them.
  • You can change. You can.

I think the reason most people hate Holden is because they saw their own annoying teenage asses in him, really.

  • They're somethin' else.

The first time I read it at age 16, I loved everything Holden had to say.

Reading it now, I almost have to keep myself from yelling "ADAPT, YOU DUMBASS."

By the by, how are the Dark Tower books?

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
When I read them, I loved them, but that was also a good five or six years ago, so take that for what it's worth.
  • First one is boring. Next few are better, although 4 is mainly just Roland backstory. 7th is mostly crap, but I liked the ending. No one else liked the ending, though.

  • They're somethin' else.

Welp, speaking of whiny protagonists, Myrm, you still hate Chuck Palahniuk's books?

  • Hate is a strong word. I just dislike them.

    Here, There, Everywhere

The thing about The Catcher in the Rye that I think a lot of people seem to miss is that Holden Caulfield is supposed to be an unlikeable asshat. Deep down, he is a broken person, and that makes him act like an immature and selfish twit.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

I would have thought that was common knowledge by now (except for teenagers, amusingly enough).

  • JHMJHM
    Here, There, Everywhere

Yeah, but the problem is that the two reactions I see most are either identification (from teenagers) or "he's so whiny" (from any number of other people), both of which miss the point entirely.

  • Fun fact: Until someone I pointed it out to changed, it, the quotes page for Catcher In The Rye were from South Park and Family Guy.

  • I'm a damn twisted person
Yeah the first Dark Tower book was basically King having an idea of Roland and him being on a quest, but aside from that he was just winging it. The whole Mordred subplot in the 7th book was a waste of time, and the confrontation with the Crimson King was weak, but I liked the true ending. Roland's quest was so pervasive to his identity he couldn't accept any fate besides carrying it on.
  • Finally someone who agrees with me on the ending.
