Try out one of the Persona games first, set it to easy and don't be ashamed to grab a walkthrough.

The stories are usually pretty good, though Nocturne has been leaving me pretty cold so far...

On a related note, I often wonder what compels us gamers to max out stats and beat up monsters hoping some ultra rare drop comes out. That kind of thing tends to make me feel empty afterwards compared to something that actually requires skill.

^^Same, but SMT games have a lot of elements to them that I'm willing to grind through, such as the (usually) strong stories, characters, and the addictive fusion mechanic.

^^I was more influenced by general commentary (Angry Video Game Nerd, for one; it's more his style of commentary I picked up rather than the dropping f-bombs, primarily things like letting the work itself do the talking when you can and giving slack when slack is due) rather than direct liveblogs.
