^^^So long as it starts with Loeb.
In any case, one of the things I liked in 3.5 was that one book I forget the title of but was called 'Weeaboo fightan magic' which was basically a bunch of fighter non-caster classes that had Wuxia-style abilities.
Really the magic class I've had a soft spot for was the warlock. The class tells you you have a bunch of at will powers and tells you to go nuts
Malk - book of nine swords. And as bad as Loeb's stories can be, he isn't a terrible person like a few other writers. Miller, Millar and Ennis spring to mind.
Yeah, but he's heading the change in cartoons that is resulting in EMH getting cancelled.
That would be Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, which features the warblade I mentioned earlier (ninja'd). I think that was a step in the right direction.
True. And you could recover them. But I still thought it was silly how they implemented that; rather than letting these classes reuse some maneuvers right away because it's convenient to do so, or using a point-based system that measures fatigue - because it's understandable that certain maneuvers are more taxing than others - it was, in the cases of the more mundane maneuvers, based on the opportunity to make such an attack only presenting itself once every battle, or once every thirty seconds or so, until a pool in the metagame refreshes.
Yeah. I've always preferred the classes with more spontaneous casting anyway. Well, I can understand the need for At-Will/Encounter/Daily powers, or points to spend, but some abstractions just don't make sense to me when applied to certain types of casters, and in any case they don't have to apply to every casting class.
Honestly, what annoys me the most is that I think that this was the only cartoon that has even come close to be on par with the Justice League cartoon, and the only reason it probably won't get to get there is because lolclippedwings
In any case I think 4e had problems with classes feeling a bit too same-y but it's definitely preferable to Fighter's being worthless after a few levels and casters getting pretty much everything under the sun.
The Dresden Files I think is another place that has a good handle on magic where different mages have different specialties like Listens-to-wind and healing, Molly and veils, and Dresden's Boomomancy.
I've never really felt that 4e was too same-y, either, honestly. But that's probably a matter of preference/perspective and I don't think it merits its own discussion.
I haven't actually played 4E, but it's one of the common complaints, which therefore has a lot to do with the design goals for 5E.
Alkthash: fine I'll give you that fantasy race thing but dwarfs are awesomesauce so shut up
Well, if the playtest doesn't get enough people, I might try to get some people together for a game that's actually about as complete as it gets.
EEEE DEEE SEEE TIME NIGGA!!
About the playtest discussion, I don't find the balance issue to be that grave, because even if what's said about greek heroes is true, the support characters mages and evil mages were actually more powerful than the hero, they usually lacked the luck or tenacity of the hero, not his ability to kill shit.
Yeah, but if people play a swordsmaster it's hard to feel like the awesome hero when the wizard has already mopped the floor six way to sunday.
^^^ The point is that the fighters ought to be just as capable of legendary feats as the wizards so that players feel equally as useful and no one has a significantly greater amount of fun than any of the others. If it's a matter of him winning because he's lucky, then maybe the fighter could get a luck bonus X times per day. But saying "even then, wizards were stronger" doesn't actually do anything to balance the game, and let's face it, 3e is ridiculously unbalanced. I'd hate to see another entire edition of improper balance.
I find game balance second to consistency but I do agree balance is needed to prevent broken parties.
^^ I can't back consistency, in this case, because it's a fantasy game anyway, and in any case, how many historical wizards are capable of doing literally everything imaginable and ascending to omnipotence like 3.5e wizards and clerics? Whereas party balance is crucial to enjoyment of the game flat-out.
(sigh) so I ended up deciding to unfollow a friend on tumblr. I really didn't want to do it, but things were getting harder and harder to deal with, what with her telling people she didn't like to kill themselves (something that reminds me of some rather unpleasant times in high school) and then lecturing on the potential of triggering someone.
The final straw basically came to her insisting our friendship hinge on agreeing with her on an issue and... well that was that.
Oh wow. That's pretty terrible. I'm really sorry to hear that.
Huh. Got put on a 3 day ban on TVT. Whatever.
Playing P3P some more. Man, I love the Gold Shadow Floors. So much money to be had.
Malk: Hrrn. I feel ya, to say the least. I do hope you still remain as friends, though.
Eesh. That sucks, bro.
^^^I hope so too, but I'm not the one who gave the ultimatum. I imagine it was mostly posturing, but still...
She often does that, actually. I'm checking her blog and I don't see any actual ultimatum, though (I do see a somewhat OTT comment, tho'). Was this in private?
Basically one of the tags (she might have removed it) was 'if you don't say yes we can't be friends'.
All this tabletop talk has reminded me of the 4e games I wanted to run--a one-shot and a Spelljammer game. It looks like my creativity will be channeled towards shipping this summer though.
