Is it possible to have a type of economy not on the spectrum from capitalism to communism?
I'm sincerely ignorant on matters of economy, so I apologize if my question makes no sense.
Depends how you define both. In fact, one can even argue that worker self-management is closer to capitalist side, because when you define capitalism as private ownership and communism as state ownership, then it's just going to be private ownership shared between a group of people. On the other hand, some socialists claim state socialism is just capitalism with the state being the capitalist, since you still go to work to earn wage and stuff. So, depends. Then there are fascists, who like to claim they're following "the third way", and some minor currents of thought like certain variations on Catholic social teachings (that Mondragon company was set up by a priest IIRC).

(Sorry for the late reply.)
Ahh, trust me, I know about the spectrum thing and have lived through a good span of it. That said, socialists don't consider social democracy to be socialist because their economy is still based on free markets, and for that same reason I'm not going to, either.
Ahh, the world isn't lacking in non-democratic capitalism, but really, it's pretty much a requirement, money is power, and when all the money is in the hands of a single entity (say, the state-government-party), well...
Also, I'm curious about that independance thing.
Panama didn't kill any colombian soldier during the separation process. The US provided naval support to avoid having to fight. All because they wanted the canal. Also, panama had an oligarchy up until the military coup in the 60's. They were all a bunch of white rich dudes who ran all the ballots and most of them were part or descendants of the independant movement.
That's awful
That's not awful. That's capitalism 101. An aristocracy of nobles is replaced by an aristocracy of wealth. And they weren¡'t all bad. Most of these presidents were capable, and not at all partisan.
I was referring mostly to the canal thing. Though if they weren't partisan, well, good.
President Chiari appointed the opposition leader to be his envoy to the US when the January 9th 1964 happened.
I just counted the number of functional clocks in my room.
I have one for every hour plus one extra!
^^ Sounds like a cool chap. Our whites and greens didn't last long before partisanship took in, and then the reds brought it to a new level.
Also, nice holiday.
^ I can't remember the last time I had a clock.
I have ten clocks in my current living space.
No, they are not all wall clocks. Only one of them is.
Most of mine are wall clocks, with a few desk/tabletop clocks thrown in
Also the number would be higher if you count things like cable boxes and microwaves that show the time on their displays, but I only counted dedicated clocks because I figured I have to draw the line somewhere
I don't have that many clocks, but I like the sound of ticking.
wall clock
VCR/cable box/TV thingy/??? clock

Seminar class, session 1: canceled because school had a snow day closure. Professor revises syllabus to accomodate the change.
Seminar class, session 2: professor is attending conference on seminar class topic, about 900 miles away. Impending ice storm. Return flight cancelled. Professor books new return flight; asks students to stay for an extra hour since class will start an hour late. New return flight is cancelled. A while later, professor secures Skype connectivity from another professor, and will use that to hold class at regular time.
And who is the vice president candidate of Ricardo Martinelli's party? Marta Linares de Martinelli. No one was surprised. It just should be illegal.
While I suppose it shouldn't be illegal, our vice president is such on the merits of banging one of Chávez' daughters.
(Psst, if you make a General Pmá. Politics Thread, I'd read it.)
We panamanians dislike the concept of re-elections. the point of a president is to have a leader with one time privileges, having continuation in power is bad for democracy. And Jose Domingo Arias is a candidate with limited accomplisments already, Marta Linares is a poor public speaker, as her announcement made clear. For more info on the concept of continuation in power: The 1994-1999 president did a referendum to change the law so he could run again for president the result was a resounding NO.
And I don't have the time nor the political acumen to make such thread. It's not a bout venting, it's about having a concise and clear political ideology.
Reminds me of the protests over 2007's referendum. Good times.
I kinda just repost news on the Vzla. politics thread, and venting is fuuuun! Ahh well, I'll have to tell 14wings to make a General S.A. politics thread. >_>
My political ideology has become very clear and concise: fuck the reds.
That's not a position, that's a reaction. It's the thing that keeps people reading Julius Evola's racist backwards shit. I was pretty red as a teenager because I was reacting to the overbearing capitalism and social injustice wrought from that system. And my godfather, who I think is a non-theist, also my uncle, was a law student in the USSR so I got lots of feedback from mother russia there. But then I've started to realize, I am more of a social democrat in practice and values. A perfectly horizontal society is unnatainable at the scale of population we need, that is, the scale to reach the stars.
We've once had identical twins as president and prime minister. Attack of the Clones jokes were had.
Hmm, you're right about the reaction thing. For yet another parallelism-in-reverse, I had been cutting the reds a bit too much slack due to the fact that things weren't all rosy during the 90s and that the opposition weren't saints either, especially early on.
Really, I mean it. I can't believe my best friend reads that doofus. It's insulting to the intelligence on so many levels.
Mussolini's thinking-brain guy.
I can give you a summation: Democracy bad, equality bad, hierarchies are the natural state of humans, fascism is a natural reaction of europeans against the forces that try to destroy what makes it great, but is misguieded. Black people are the descendants of a southern precursor race brought down by their inherent materialism. Norther europeans and native americans and some asians were the descendants of a superior norther race, like atlantis, who were brought down because they lost touch with their spirituality, and they were not entirely physicial beings and the mixing of races is bad because it dooms everyone to the downs that the souther race had and a great monarchy should be ideal and oh my god.
Sounds like a Metapedia idol.
My friend is too right-wing for even them.
