That's because: 1.) Japanese people love Dragon Quest and you should too, and 2.) it makes it orders of magnitude easier to create content.
Anyway, while RPG Maker is sort of limited, if you want to make an RPG or another game that uses a similar system, it's far easier, even if you're going to be using RGSS, than using Game Maker or another similar tool.
^Yeah, if you're making the sort of game it's made for, it's really good.
PC gamers, particularly those looking into new computers, take note: the Ars Technica System Guide for December 2012 is out.
I used the two-year-old one to build my current system, and as of now the only game it's been unable to run maxed out is The Witcher 2, so if this one is equally good, I'd highly recommend it.
I have never played a Dragon Quest game.
Anyway, my issue is that the devs put in side-on, sprite-based combat ages ago and there was a bunch of community content created for that system and then they scrapped it.
Well, you can't really use RPG Maker 2k3 sprites in later RPG Makers anyway because 2k/2k3 used 24x24 tiles whereas XP/VX/ACE use 32x32 tiles.
In any case, because of RGSS you can implement basically whatever in XP and later makers, and so there are multiple side-view battle systems that have been created, should you want to use one.
This brings me to the other thing about RPG Maker, I guess.
If I'm going to put a significant degree of effort into a system (not just copypastaing someone else's code, but you get the picture) then I'm probably going to look for more versatile engines and platforms in the first place. Getting the most out of RPG Maker requires a substantial amount of effort, like getting the most out of anything in games development. But in the long run, that effort is better spent on more versatile and personalised stuff. After all, I'm reasonably sure you're not supposed to sell any games you make via RPG Maker, especially if you've used any of the default game assets provided.
So RPG Maker is a lot of fun and a great hobby tool, but it leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to going to full nine yards in developing one's own game. Even if it's an RPG. That said, I've played some really good RPG Maker games (they do happen, at least like once in a blue moon), but they've all been constrained and damaged by the limitations RPG Maker has put on them.
I think you actually can.
Huh. I'll take your word on that since I was making an assumption rather than reading anything to do with licenses or conditions of use. Never heard of anyone actually selling their RPG Maker game, though.
It's been done before, I think, though I can't actually recall what commercial games have actually been released.
There certainly are a lot of people who want to make commercial games with it though, but naturally most of them are terrible devs who will never finish their game in the first place, let alone make it good enough to be worth any money.
I seem to remember one game that was first released free, got super popular, and then they made a deluxe version with tons of extra content that was paid for. Blanking on the name though.
Also, I seem to have crappy luck, because the day I decide to get The Secret World is right after I missed sweet deals on Amazon and a bunch of other sites to get the game for 15-20 bucks. So, as soon as I get another 5 bucks in my Paypal, or I find another deal that drops the game at least 5 bucks, I will buy it and start showcasing it for you guys.
Maybe do some audience participation RP-y fun, since the game has some "gasp" choices.
^^Cave Story? La Mulana? Probably other indie games I can't think of right now?
^Dude. Steam sale is in less than a week. It'll probably go on sale for 50% off or more.
I think he was specifically talking about RPG Maker games.
That's the line of thought here.
Then I'm stumped, since the only RPGMaker game I'm familiar with is Yume Nikki.
Yeah, RPG Maker.
Thanks, Crimson, you're probably right.
ALSO, can I just say I NEVER saw the point to the RPG Maker PS1 games? Even if they were good?
^ I've played a lot of Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle Deluxe lately. Basically, it is a Yuri Adventure Game/Visual Novel made to look like an RPG that makes fun of literally every RPG and fantasy trope in the book. It's very smart, very fun and...very hot.
It's only true problem is the fact that there are WAY TOO MANY ENDINGS AND OUTCOMES. Seriously, there are too many fucking things you can do, and lock out, and endings you can get, and loads of loads of characters. It's very easy to miss things. Luckily, there is a full official walkthrough that tells you the order to do everything in to get all the endings that matter, include the True Ending.
There are games that do choices much, much better. :v
There isn't much of a point except that it's fun, since obviously it's pretty difficult to distribute games and such, plus lots of limitations and a console controller is not ideal for game development. (also they weren't just on the PS1. There were two for the Super Famicom, two for the PS2, I think two for the GBA, and one for the DS) I really loved them, even though I never ended up really doing anything with any of them.
That said, there are a couple communities that shared games made with them (via various hardware for storing savegames on computers), so it's not like it's impossible to play other people's games or anything.
You've played it, Nova? Could you tell me about it? Is 30 bucks worth it?
I played it for about half an hour, then gave up on it. Didn't particularly like it though.
That's...disappointing. I do hear plenty of good things from certain people though...
Hmmmm...I really wish there was a trial. I only have the $30
Meh, I'll get it anyway. It's only 30 bucks, and I have it for life, no subscriptions. If I don't like it, I'll consider it a lesson learned.
I know of the following RPG Maker games: Houston's Big Adventure (only demo available), To The Moon, Millenium: a Hew Hope, and a ton more RPG Maker games on various places on the internet than you can shake a stick at.
...waitaminute, where did all those games gonever mind they're under "RPG" rather than "anime".Yeah, let's see...Ahriman's Prophecy, Aveyond, and much more...

Yeah, there are a lot out there.
Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle was a blast. I'm surprised it's not more well-known, honestly.
Also the true ending made me wut.
But yeah it's big problem was that there were way, way too many mutually-exclusive aternate endings. Including some that made no real sense. Also I missed the entire drow plotline first time around.
I know about it!
I even downloaded it once.
I never actually played it though.
Apparently the Deluxe Edition added several endings. I'm not sure I really want to play the game again just to see them though.
I'm also a tad annoyed by that, I though the dev was working on the sequel.
It's really well-known among yuri fans, and it's fairly well-known elsewhere. It's just not a great game, so people don't talk about it a lot.
It's the best sprite-based RPG/visual novel hybrid I've ever played.
Incidentally, you seem to think a lot of games are not good.
I think a lot of games are very enjoyable. I think a lot of games are okay, or even good. I think not a lot of games are great. I think a lot of things, and I will talk about them at length if I get bored or annoyed, so shush.
