To be honest, I am having some trouble figuring out why people didn't realize that complaints about TVT on SA, while sometimes quite legitimate, were (1) not always reasonable and (2) rarely delivered with any convincing sense of decorum, to the point where it seemed that some of those people bashing TVT on SA were as obsessively bashing TVT as the TVT users they criticized were obsessively defending Troper Tales / lolicon content / whatever.
It's not that they didn't realize, it's just that it was hardly relevant.
How was it not relevant? There was a wave of SA-idolization among several veteran TVT forumites. This realization could have cut down on that stupidity.
Well, simply put, Glenn, people were unhappy. When people are unhappy, they'll take what they can get to act against the reason of said unhappiness.
also, I'd say that the thread wasn't always as bad as it is now.
One of the things that always bugged me about the TV Tropes threads on SA was the dogmatic equation of ephebophilia and pedophilia. ...no, wait, I'll explain.
The acceptance of ephebophilia (by which we define attraction of adults towards teenagers) varies from country to country, and appears to be way more accepted in Europe than in the US. Where I live, the age of consent is 14 and anyone over that age is considered fully sexually mature, and sexual attraction to anyone over that age is considered perfectly normal. Relationships between teenagers and older adults aren't considered sick, just inappropriate due to the huge age gap, but it's not uncommon to see a couple consisting of a teenager and a young adult in early 20s.

What bugged me the most about that thread was many posters' tendency to run their mouths before getting certain facts straight that puts into context whatever page or attitude they were trying to mock. They used to make good points often enough regardless, but in terms of humor it made the thread pretty groanworthy.

I stopped taking the SA mock thread seriously when a Troper posted about a 13 year old classmate dating a 19 year old and they all went "oh come on is not that bad". I wish I had some kind of link to prove it but it's such a huge thread I can't be arsed to look for it.
I stopped taking taking it seriously when they jumped on a goon for pointing out to another goon who defended some (mild) form of incest that it's the sort of thing they mocked tropers for. It was mild, but it really was something they mocked and continued to mock.
Oh, yeah, I was also bugged by the ex-tropers (namely, Daionus and Scrye) who acted hard to look like they were far removed from the TVT community by hurling site-wide accusations they wouldn't have otherwise.
Hell, I dunno, man.

In other words, people trying far too hard to distance themselves from something, to the point of lobbing criticisms past the realm of good reasoning.
It's because having sex with a teenager and a child are both statutory rape, so many people consider them to be the same thing.
Also, relatedly, people consider ephebophilia and pedophilia to explicitly involve having sex with a minor when they actually just describe an attraction to a minor.
Also, most people don't actually know that "ephebophilia" is even a word, and so just use "pedophilia" to describe everything related to sex with a minor.
I don't really understand why people are so willing to equate pedophilia and ephebophilia. As much as I detest child porn and, to a degree, pedophilia, I would never really put it in the same category as ephebophilia.

You know, yeah, I went off into at least one rant with this idea. So it is, heh heh heh, relative. Define what do you mean, eh? 'Cause it's all "morality is relative" and those with other views are dangerous fundies, and then somebody finds out about loli porn having a TVT entry, and suddenly all those who cry relative, they go ballistic. Where's the logic in it?
If you're curious, I'm not sure myself to whom do I belong, relatives or objectives. It'd take a paragraph or two.
T be fair to Anne, she's not viewed by the SA people as a "messiah who was willing to tell those TVTropes jackasses what's what", as most of you seem to think. She was commended in the past for that, but they've pretty much gotten over it by now. She's been told multiple times to stop dwelling on her banning, in fact.
It's also pretty funny how many of them insult TVTropes users for taking the site too seriously... when they're posting on a thread devoted solely to mocking another thread.
I still think TVTropes is a screwed up community, but the SA thread is far from the bastion of sanity I used to think it was.
That's debatable. I agree with you, probably, but there are plenty of people who have argued and will continue to argue that morality is objective or at least based on objective principles. In fact, I think even many (most?) people who say that morality is subjective will say that things like, say, murder, are pretty much always bad, for instance.

Some people make the mistake of believing that TVT is a morality enforcement tool.
Good and evil, as abstract human constructs that vary from individual interpretation, can only be subjective. However, most people today equate harm with evil, and objective harmfulness is a lot likelier to exist than objective morality. Most moral dilemmas nowadays boil to defining what is/isn't, or is more/less harmful.

I think the problem is that these mock threads easily turn into crusades to "clean up/destroy (whatever site)" and people lose all sense of proportion. That's definitely what happened with the Reddit thread, which I also used to post in, probably because it was full of redditors, much as the TV Tropes thread is full of ex-tropers.
I think this has led to paedos being seen under every bed. I do think TV Tropes has a problem on this score which has never been properly tackled by the moderation. I just wouldn't tar absolutely everyone who ever posted there with the same brush (or I wouldn't still be here). A lot of people in the SA thread do.

I mean, I could complain on all the sort of crap the Internet has, including, like, all the Turn-On Tropes lists and shit we've had back on 'Tropes, but I prefer to stay quiet, under the surface so to say. You know, not to show myself as the stupid fundie uncool loser, these things. So from my perspective, I just stay quiet, and suddenly all those cool fun-having people, those whom I imitated (I mean, I didn't surface, so perhaps imitation is not the word, more like, say, staying in the background or whatever) all the time (still do, there're a couple of questionable views up my sleeve even now) they as if wake up and start wreaking shit, and I'm all like, what the hell?
If you're curious 'bout that loli porn: meh. That was a rhetorical device, had nothing particular in mind. Rather the general idea of animated porn and all that hentai shit. Besides, doesn't seem there's anything to link to now.
