Well, the forum is mostly PHP and AJAX so it's not too difficult to play with.The biggest issue is that TVTropes doesn't really have an API. Maybe PMWiki does though.

Application Programming Interface. Basically, it's a way for programs to interact with each other following a set of rules.

PMWiki is open source, I believe.

It's still fairly similar in terms of appearance.. There are lots of other additions though and I'd hate to actually know what Eddie's code looks like.

About potholes, the forum software here is supposed to be open source and pluggable. It'd be entirely possible to create a wikilink system plugin to do pothole syntax if you had the time and knowledge.

Well, the software's not the problem so much as the hosting. IIRC, Longfellow said that with the "free" Vanillaforums.com account, the customization options were so limited that, for example, he can only choose between six pre-made color schemes.

It's like the difference between running a Wordpress blog on your own server and setting up a free blog on Wordpress.com.

Well, it's not that expensive to host a website. My website is hosted for around 4 cents a day, plus the yearly domain registration.

http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net has cheap and flexible hosting.
