Banksy Shouldn't Be Punished Because It's Art

edited 2011-04-25 03:23:34 in General
Erm, what? I've heard this statement a whole bunch of times and it doesn't sit right with me. Banksy defaces people's property, there is no reason what soever that he can't do his paintings on canvasses LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Or Hell, do them on his own damn wall.

I mean, if I killed a bunch of children, ripped all their bones out and used them to make sculptures, then I would rightly imprisoned, no? Well not if I call it art!

    "Graffiti is a victimless crime!"

One assumes you're not the shopkeeper or building owner having to remove ugly images that would look just as "good" on paper as brick, then.

It's fucking vandalism, and should be done on your own property, not somebody else's. If I'm sitting on a train reading a paper, you don't have the right to reach underneath me and start drawning on the other side of it. I'm quite sure there's a similar, better analogy I can make based on the same idea.

  • You were just waiting to post that.
  • $80+ per session
    Fuck that's hot.
  • Well, graffiti is vandalism, so if the wall in question belongs to someone, it is far from victimless.

People are free to paint whatever they want on their own walls or if they have an owner's permission.
  • His art would simply not have worked anywhere else but on other people's buildings. But we can't let him go free because of that. Laws should be enforced consistently.

He's perfectly entitled to take up architecture, create some buildings, and vandalise them to his heart's content. Otherwise it's no different from claiming theft to be art if you do an interpretive dance to get past security.
  • The law should indeed be enforced consstently. No exceptions for "art" and so on.

Even though this one would pay to see that:

^^^ It would be much cheaper at that point to vandalize buildings and pay the fines.

I've plenty regard for humour, but deface property that has fuck all to do with you and I will ensure you're arrested and forced to clean it up. Or is this a case where the victims of crime are in the wrong because they don't "get it" and their minds are too constrained to accept the brilliance of the vandal's crappy drawings?

Because you never know what you might see.
I think Banksy's art is pretty good, but YMMV I guess.

I remember there was some funny graffiti near here.  Somebody painted a carousel onto a traffic roundabout just down the road from here.  Then the council painted over it because they are boring sods.
  • As a petty and vindictive person, I have to take extra steps not to appear petty and vindictive.
Around here, graffiti art on public spaces and unused buildings is pretty much sanctioned.

Besides, I don't think very many people nowadays are pressing vandalism charges when they get a Banksy stencil on their wall.

Around here (Glasgow) people often don't push charges if they get stabbed. Doesn't mean people should protest when charges are levelled.

Wait, I thought the whole "everybody gets stabbed in Glasgow" thing was a joke?

Depends whereabouts in Glasgow you're talking about really. Dennistab (Dennistoun) is much cleared up these days, being mostly students these days and The Gorbals is nowhere near the shithole it used to be. But you still need to stay the fuck out of Pollok, Easterhouse (mostly), Maryhill, Drumchapel and the like. Knife crime has always been a major problem here, and I don't see it changing.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Heh heh, Dennistab. Ironic that there are no longer many stabbings there, no?
  • FUCK I WAS JUST ABOUT TO SAY THAT GLORIOUS

I thought the same thing as GLORIOUS.

Dennistab was the Detractor Nickname only because it was one of the scuzziest parts of Glasgow for a time. Now it's pretty much obsolete, the place is perfectly safe so people don't really call it that anymore, except for nostalgia.
  • When in Turkey, ROCK THE FUCK OUT
Wait, so it was intentionally named that?

    :(
  • Banksy shouldn't be punished nor anybody else who draws on other people's walls.

I have to say I really don't see why people care. It's not like brick looks so amazing.

If people want to give others permission to draw on them, that's their business. But it shouldn't be assumed in advance, because it's their property and they might have their own reasons for not wanting it painted on. Like not finding it aesthetically pleasing. Really can't see why this needs to be battered into people's skulls.
