Congrats; it's gonna cost more to rehire people. Assuming you can even get them back.
You see, there's a set of beliefs which has recently been noticed as the ideology of Silicon Valley billionaires, a sort of technologically-minded libertarianism. Libertarianism as the ideology of billionaires isn't surprising, if perhaps a bit misleading since it's a bit too much freedom-minded for folks who don't want their factory drones get too high, but where the difference lies is in that it got cut with a lot of, shall we say, pop-science stuff. Cryonics, evil AIs, neuralinks, the like. I guess you could say they are mainstreaming it, since about the only vaguely mainstream one of that ilk is Nick Bostrom, who wrote a book on the threat of evil AIs, but AFAIK even so he shied away for going all the way to "evil robots from future will drag you to computer hell for not giving all your savings to some neckbeard who wrote a mildly interesting Harry Potter fanfic".
So, Nick Bostrom, Peter Singer, and the whole "rationalist" crowd. Add the notions of the heroic capitalist into the mix, and you get folks like Musk deeply convinced they are not only superior by virtue of having more money, but also freaking world-saving superheroes to an almost literal extent. So, the stupid shizzle he does isn't just because he made bad decisions, he made those decisions because he sees himself as some sort of maverick hero saving the world from itself against the masses of sheeple who don't think "rationally" or "long-term".
Makes me think there's some sort of generational thing. Bill Gates is also a billionaire, but he engages in much saner stuff, like third world vaccination. When the lessbonk party got going, he was already established, so he never had the time to develop the taste for kool-aid or some such.
This article summarizes Twitter's current (as of a few days ago) problems with advertisers. Some of the observations include:
* many advertisers are pausing and/or reducing ad spending on Twitter
* Elon Musk has apparently personally called (or at least sought to do so) chief executives to "berate" them for curbing advertising
* lots of employees have left, most relevantly in ad sales but also technical staff
* some advertisers are even having technical issues with advertising on the site
* Mr. Musk blames leftists (lel)

TL;DR the Boring Company, Musk's tunnel-building company, promises to build major infrastructure projects better and for cheap and undercut competitors by a lot, and then fails to deliver. And it's done this in multiple locations already -- San Bernardino, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Maryland.
There's a similar pattern of promising big things and getting a lot of glitzy attention only to run into the problems of reality later on.
(He blames excessive government regulations, because of course he blames something else. Though as the article points out, the state of Maryland (with a Republican governor, even) fast-tracked permits for the project Boring was supposed to be working on. Yet the company still ghosted the state.)
More updates on the business situation.
There's a lot of cost-cutting, in ways that are patently unsustainable. Like, literally not paying a bunch of bills, including but not limited to rent. There's also firing people, from kitchen staff to the trust and safety team, and even selling off kitchen equipment.
There's also a lot of legal wrangling waiting in the wings. And there's been shake-ups in the legal team -- not just when Musk took over the company, but even with Musk's own guy (i.e. Alex Spiro) leaving (seemingly due to Musk's displeasure).
And apparently there's also the idea floating around of not paying severance for employees who've left. Of course, if they violate more agreements this will just mean even more legal wrangling.
This is all gonna take a while to play out.
In light of the legal and financial troubles the company is facing, this whole recent thing about the "Twitter files" regarding Hunter Biden feels like more of a distraction, heh.

The funniest thing is, even if Musk and the Twitter staff make this change, that means there's now more details to sweat over, and (assuming there's still gonna be regular polls) more features to maintain. Also this change is also based on another very recent change itself, and of course a lot of Twitter staff have left the company during this very tumultuous time, meaning...whoever's gonna be handling this is gonna have a fun time with ironing out software bugs.
there's other recent developments such as login issues but I don't feel like going out of my way to look that up so don't take this thread as some sort of comprehensive assessment of what's going on there
