    My favorite is the Divergent one, Activity 3 literally just tells teachers to tell kids to just go buy Four already come on.

    also it's probably a bad idea to learn character development from two characters who basically flip flip around until one of them dies

    I was about to crack some joke about American schools being looked at through fixed sights more often than being fixed, but then I realized I probably don't want to be so edgy. On a scale of edginess from Sunday School to 4chan, this would be somewhere around... I dunno, Something Awful? That seems to me about appropriate, at the moment at least.

    Huh, I just learned about forced labour (and death through it) of millions of German after WWII, loads of innocent civilians included.

    I'm used to reading about bullshit that went on during the war itself, but I feel weird only now learning about post-war bullshit like that.

    Yeah, a lot of really important pre and post-war context is lost in the simplified narrative favoured by popular media and throwaway History Channel documentaries. Australia's WW1 perspective on ethnically German and Austrian citizens is telling, for instance; they were considered "enemy subjects" of the English crown, despite usually having no political affiliation with their countries of ethnic origin. One might imagine that, given time to fester, such resentment could contribute to a backfire -- such as ethnic solidarity wielded as a weapon of brutal nationalism. 

    WWII in particular is disproportionately subject to narrative preference. Like how obscure that little resource blockade Churchill imposed on India was, resulting in millions of deaths via starvation, despite India being a territory of the Empire at the time.  And yet, positive results of WWII are nearly ignored (such as the establishment of the UN and the movement towards welfare states) in favour of nearly baseless moralising. 

    I find the irony of WWII to be how commonly accepted it is that there was a "good" side and a "bad" side, despite it being possibly the best example of how such total war destroys ethics, morality, and often law well before there are winners to twist the story.

    Also, firebombings of civilian populations. Yes, yes, demoralize the population, end the war, but that only really works if enough of them are killed in one swoop, I'd wager. Otherwise it just galvanizes the lot.

    On second though, I did know about all the rape going on, so I did know about post-war abuses, just not officially-sponsored ones.

    I never liked the civilians "paying for their crimes" thing, but learning that it was used as an excuse for that makes it downright bothersome. I'll wikiwalk some more to see what else I've missed. Maybe I'll find something on the Danish resistance?

    I'm afraid I can't concentrate as well as I normally could on the current subject, but it's nice to be in a place where people agree that killing civilians is both a bad thing AND a serious thing that you shouldn't just trivialize.

    Because I was just on fucking TV Tropes and the people I talked to there don't seem to think so. I'm sorry if this is importing drama, and if so I'll try to keep it to a minimum, but this counts as an update on me.

    It finally happened. I've been banned from TV Tropes, or as good as banned. I can't post, I can't access PMs, and I can't look at threads if I'm logged in.

    I'll go into what happened if that turns out not to be a problem. But for now, all I'll say is that this fucking sucks. Both because I can no longer interact with people I enjoyed interacting with, and because I discovered it was a mistake to put faith in certain other people.

    EDIT: I also have a request. If anybody here is able to still post and/or send PMs on TV Tropes, I was part of the Roll To Dodge thread there, in Forum Games. They just started up a new session before this happened, and people are likely going to be wondering where I've suddenly gone. So if somebody could either post in that thread or contact the person running the game and tell them I'll be gone for either the foreseeable future or for good, I would appreciate it a lot. I'd hate for people to post what they want their character to do and then be waiting around going "When the hell is Trout gonna post? Should we wait for him or what?"
