    cute girls

is all the reason I need to convince myself to watch a show, so... >.>

BUT this is a novel, not a show.

It's cute how you think you have good taste.

They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...
The only possible way this could be good is if it drives Icycalm into a frothing, demented coma.

Well, the only person in that manga that's acceptable for Icycalm is Nietzsche, and besides, the worst-case scenario for him is that he'll say something like "Silly subhumans with their poor understanding of the great Nietzsche!" (Although with more feeling and CAPSLOCKED WORDS)

Back on topic, how many japanese products got to be as ridiculous as this? First Seikon no Quazar or whatever it's spelled, and now this.
  • edited 2011-09-17 22:23:49

I'm not sure how this is comparable to Seikon no Qwazer... >.>

That is, Seikon no Qwazer is about magical breast milk or whatever, this is just yet another series about moe anthropomorphizations of things that really didn't need to be anthropomorphized at all.  And there are very many such series lately.  Even Strike Witches counts as one, and it's certainly stranger than this one.

EDIT: Also I just realized that calling them anthropomorphizations is weird when the things they're based on were already humans. >.>

  • edited 2011-09-17 22:24:23

Moe anthromorphizing real people. Well, that's one I haven't seen before.

But I am wondering, has the manga industry Jumped the Shark, or is this just a real life non - sequitor?

Also, does anything I just typed make any sense?

  • They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...

^^ Well, both are still ridiculous in their own way.

  • But I am wondering, has the manga industry Jumped the Shark, or is this just a real life non - sequitor?

This is a light novel, not manga (though, yeah, the industries are related).  And as for jumping the shark... if it has, this certainly wasn't the jumping point, since this series isn't particularly unique and mostly seems to just be following a trend.
  • You can change. You can.
    > Manga Industry
    > Jumping the shark

    wait you are serious

no, industries as a whole can't just jump the shark all of a sudden. That'd imply that any contemporary work released alongside this is automatically bad. And, well, I don't know much about manga, but I refuse to believe that.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
For one thing, this isn't really a manga. But details aside, this is simply the result of years worth of Otaku pandering. They do this because it sells, nothing more.

Curse not the work but rather the circumstances that allowed it to exist.
  • You can change. You can.
I should mention that we are judging the work by its cover, rather than the actual content.

Yes, I saw Spinoza's panties, I don't care. Maybe there's something good in all this? Hopefully? Please? For the love of anything good ever?
  • You mean like Kodomo no Jikan (supposedly)?

Well, I doubt it'll be particularly great, but on the other hand it's not like it really seems offensively bad.  It's most likely just a typical moe/comedy series, and the moe philosphers thing is just thrown in as a gimmick, to differentiate it from all the other series that are exactly the same thing except without moe philosophers.

tl;dr: expect nothing particularly good or bad.

    ^ in what way?

^^ guh, ok, i'll shut up.

^ Basically "Loli fanservice show that is actually well written (supposedly)"

Basically "Loli fanservice show that is actually well written (supposedly)"

    Ah.

Well, it's more like, a loli fanservice show that is reasonably well-written when it wants to be, but it's still primarily an ecchi comedy and it does not make any attempt to hide that fact (especially the manga, as the anime was less ecchi-ish), so it's not something I'd really recommend unless people wanted an ecchi comedy that is primarily about lolis.

Which I guess is also pretty much the most I could reasonably hope for out of this book, I guess.  That is, it might be decent, but I definitely can't imagine it's the sort of thing that would be worth reading if you weren't a fan of moe and whatnot.  Of course that's based on seeing absolutely nothing but some of the illustrations and the title, I guess, so... yeah... >.>

  • I really hope that this book is ridiculously dense and filled with philosophy stuff that goes on for pages and ends up being so dense and well-researched it's awesome.

    But it won't.

And that makes me feel sad.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Am I the only one who thinks this is actually a good idea for teaching? I mean, moe is popular and this could get a lot of people genuinely interested into philosophy, just like S&W did with economics.

To me, it looks like it will be mostly stories that are parables for the characters' philosophies.

Really, it's really not any worse than those 'The Matrix and Philosophy' books.

Also, I think a lot of the character designs are spot on, especially Kant's. I just hope Kierkegaard's in it somewhere.

Worst case scenario it's an amusing example of Japan being weird.

  • They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...
^ I don't think they would know about Alex Kierkegaard, if that's the guy you're thinking about.
  • Hmm...as I've stated, I sincerely doubt it would be a good Philosophy for Dummies resource, but benefit of the doubt and all that. The main reason for my scepticism is the way the word "philosophy" is thrown around.

^^^I'm not sure if I want the type of person that would be into this sort of stuff to get into serious philosophy...
  • Would they have the attention span to attempt comprehending actual philosophy texts?

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    ^^^^Wrong Kierkegaard, bro.

^^^Yeah, but they're using actual philosophers and not just asking 'what's your life philosophy, maaaan?'

^^Why not? Being into moe doesn't automatically make someone some deformed neanderthal.

^You know, people get on me when I say this shit about people who liked the Transformers films so I tried to stop. Just sayin'.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
Maybe not, but someone getting into philosophy because of some moe anime/light novel thing...irks me.

No worse than people who started taking philosophy because of The Matrix. A lot of these people might not even realize philosophy is their thing until reading this. It's intended as a gateway drug.
  • edited 2011-09-17 23:39:59

Well, I guess that will depend on the writing, which again I'm sceptical of.

"You know, people get on me when I say this shit about people who liked the Transformers films so I tried to stop. Just sayin'."

Point. Though philosophical arguments are written differently from comic books, to say the least.

I doubt it will ever be translated so I won't be able to say.

I just enjoy the hell out of the concept.

Also, the credentials of the writer are something I'm interested in. If they're a genuine philosophy professor or whatnot I'd be optimistic.

^^^The Matrix (the first one at least) was a legitimately good piece of film with a great deal of mainstream success. There isn't any evidence that this isn't anything more than your average Otaku crap.

    Or basically what Abyss_Worm said.

There isn't any evidence that this isn't anything more than your average Otaku crap.

There isn't any evidence of anything at all, one way or another.

From that article, we know that the characters are all cute girls.  And... absolutely nothing else.  You can't really make any judgments about it other than that it's trying to appeal to otaku, which doesn't really mean a whole lot.

(yes, I am aware of all the other judgments I have previously made about it in this thread. >.>)

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Also, just think if there was press release about a slick martial arts movie teaching the philosophies of Socrates and Descartes every philosophy major would go bleh.

Funnily enough, I showed this to a friend of mind currently getting his Masters in Philosophy and he can't wait. XD
