Final Fantasy nowadays

edited 2011-07-14 08:38:49 in General
I hate that it has gorgeous graphics and ridiculous anime characters now, with anime bishies as villains. I miss when it had 8-bit graphics and ridiculous anime characters, with lame Joker-ripoffs as villains.

Don't worry. At the rate Square-Enix is going, the final Fantasy is coming and then you won't have to deal with anime bishies villains for that series ever again.
  • Yeah, I look forward to the day when Square-Enix goes bankrupt due to selling so many well-reviewed bestselling games.

So many well-reviewed bestselling games? Is it still the 90s?
  • Selling 1.7 million copies in Japan in 2009, Final Fantasy XIII became the fastest-selling title in the history of the series. As of May 2010, the game sold 5.5 million copies worldwid
  • The game was well-received, earning year-end awards from numerous video gaming websites. In Japan, it shipped more than one million copies within a week of its release. One month after its North American release, it had sold over one million copies and was the second best-selling game of 2006.[4] As of March 31, 2007, the game has shipped over 4 million copies worldwide
  • The sales of Dragon Quest IX set new records in Japan; these sales helped boost Nintendo's earnings and have impacted future plannings by the company. Dragon Quest IX set a Guiness World Record with its Chance Encounter mode surpassing 100 million people communicating anonymously as reported on May 20, 2010
  • Final Fantasy XII received near-universally high review scores, and earned numerous "Game of the Year" awards in various categories from noted video game publications. Selling more than two million copies in Japan, it became the fourth best-selling PlayStation 2 game of 2006 worldwide. As of March 2007, over 5.2 million copies of the game have been shipped worldwide. A sequel, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, was released for the Nintendo DS in 2007.
  • Dragon Quest VIII has enjoyed much success since its release, both in Japan and in the US. It is a Square Enix Ultimate Hits and a Sony Greatest Hits title. A survey conducted in 2006 by the magazine Famitsu earned the game the #4 spot as the best video game of all time after Final Fantasy XFinal Fantasy VII andDragon Quest III
  • According to Square Enix, sales reports ending March 31, 2010, Just Cause 2 has sold over 1,480,000 units worldwide.
  • Go Square Enix. Guess they have a GREAT silent majority.
  • The World Ends with You received positive reviews and has been commercially successful. Game Informer named the game its Handheld Game of the Month award for May 2008. IGN gave The World Ends with You its Editors' Choice Award, and named it the DS Game of the Month for April.[62] In Japan, the game premiered as the second-best selling DS title during the week of July 27, 2007.[63] Nearly 193,000 units were sold in Japan by the end of 2007.[64] The World Ends with You sold 43,000 copies during April 2008 in North America.[65] The first shipment of the game sold out mid-May[66] and a second shipment was made in mid-June 2008.[67] The game was the top-selling DS title the week of its release[68] and again two weeks later.[69] As of September 30, 2008, The World Ends With You has sold approximately 140,000 copies in North America and 20,000 copies in Europe.[70]

Oh really? That's amazing! What kind of numbers are their for Final Fantasy XIV? And when is Versus coming out? I wonder how that Final Fantasy VII Compliation is going. Those Kingdom Heart side-games sure on popping up a lot.

  • no longer cuddly, but still Edmond
    Hahahah yeah.

I don't agree with your specific point but I do think Final Fantasy as a whole largely hit the shitter. The biggest problem (besides increasingly-shoddy gameplay mechanics) is just how full of itself the series is. Every time I see one of those games in action I can't help but think that somepony on the design team was so high and mighty on how artsy-shmartsy he thought he was that the self-adulation alone probably made him cum in his pant. The sheer pretentiousness of those games is revolting.

Actually I just described Squaresoft's entire catalogue from the PS1 era up to the present day. I should probably check into what Enix is doing--I seem to remember they actually made good games.
  • «Yeah, I look forward to the day when Square-Enix goes bankrupt due to selling so many well-reviewed bestselling games.»
Actually, the question is whether Final Fantasy sales will be able to keep up with their rapidly expanding budgets.  If current trends continue, Final Fantasy XX will have to sell to every human being twice in order to break even.

Then just SAY THAT instead of acting like your personal dissatisfaction with a game reflects a universal law.

"Oh really? That's amazing! What kind of numbers are their for Final Fantasy XIV? And when is Versus coming out? I wonder how that Final Fantasy VII Compliation is going. Those Kingdom Heart side-games sure on popping up a lot."

Why yes, I did just prove you to be dead wrong.

^Meh, you proved my wrong using Wikipedia. So?

I hope you stay right, honestly. I like Square-Enix games, but they desperately need to rework their business model if they want to say on top, because they are always one Spirit Within away from the poor house.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I think Myrm is complaining about people who complain about the new Final Fantasies.

Why do I take his bait so? I need to quit commenting on his topics until after someone else already has.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
God forbid people think new Final Fantasies aren't particularly noteworthy.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    FF13
PRESS A HOLD FORWARDS: The game.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I still haven't played an FF game I liked enough to finish, old or new.
  • Only for the first bit! You do that later on and you're going to die fast.

Look, I'm not saying the Hold A, Press Forwards thing wasn't a problem. But it wasn't as big a problem as people made out, once you get later into the Battle System does actually get very strategic and in depth.

    -smiles at the FFXII comment-

I have actually heard a lot of people liked FFXIII, but it's just that a few people did not like the fact that you weren't allowed to waste time running around.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
I liked FFXII. The gameplay was fantastic the story was okay. Funny how Vaan came about though and how the game has more side-quests and main quest. But one thing that bothers me about the series is that in a lot of the games, everyone can do everything. FFIII and V (I think, can't remember) had the job system, FFVII gave us Materia, FFVIII Guardian Forces, FFX sphere grid, FFX2 dress spheres, FFXII license board.

^ The international release has job systems, it's just the NTSE (whatever) version that doesn't. I liked not being bound to any jobs though, because then I could have White Warriors.
  • I'm about to go all yar-har-fiddle-dee-dee on my PS2. Out of all the all the FF games from 7-12, what I should get first?
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington

It's great that the games at least let one play the way they will. I like to specialize my characters, but that's just how I am. I guess to me, it just feels like the characters are less individualized because of the customization. It's not the biggest turn off though.

  • You can change. You can.
I recommend XII as it is the only actually playable one, Inkblot.
  • Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
Yeah, XII is good. I hope you like Star Wars though.
