Katawa Shoujo (visual novel)

edited 2012-01-29 14:16:28 in Media

I thought you would be this trashy rag exploiting disabilities for fetish appeal.

Instead, you're a heartwarming game about a cast of characters who are on the most part normal highschoolers going through personal (i.e. character) development.

And there's only like one panty-shot outside of the designated h-scenes, and those can be switched off. And the h-scenes themselves aren't exactly glamorous either, in such a way that I'm wondering if it was a critical commentary on that sort of thing itself.

And you've even brought me to tears by the end of Rin's arc!  What is this?  What's going on?

    Moe

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

Rin? She's barely bearable. Rambly and unfocused.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't care for Rin. I never really care for that kind of character, and I can't imagine being in a relationship with one.

  •

    Only Rin that matters.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

    Tohsaka Rin is Best Rin

    Loli rin

    Comes in loli flavor too

  • But, see, the difference is that I haven't watched Fate/stay Night but I have watched and read Kojika.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

    That is from Fate/Zero, though.

    I haven't watched that either though! :O

Also, Gen Urobuchi, so I probably never will watch it.

Wait, Urobochi is involved with the Fate series? In that case, I kinda want to watch it more. Just so long as it isn't too shonen-y; I recall the episode and a half I saw being way too much like shonen, and sucking as a result.

    What's wrong with Urobuchi?

Also, Fate Series being shonen...that makes no sense, it is a demographic not a genre, and if you were implying fighting series...Let me laugh at you...because it is not the same type of fighting series.

Madoka was shitty, and if that's the sort of story that Urobuchi gets such an outstanding amount of praise for, then I don't have any interest in his other works.

    Madoka was shitty

I was gonna say something, but we've already had this discussion a bunch of times.

  • edited 2012-01-29 21:01:12

Actually, I should say that there were good parts in Madoka, but absolutely none of them had anything to do with the writing.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!

Madoka was okay, but nowhere near as good as Saya no Uta. And that's after SnU loses a bunch of points for the unnecessary unskippable sex scenes.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

So, moving discussion to other thread or something? We've kinda hijacked this.

    holy shit, ninjas. >:|

whatever. All I have to say is that I can easily argue for Madoka's good points. It's overrated, yes. But what good series isn't? I mean, this is the internet we're talking about. If something is not the holy grail of media, it is the hitler of media.

I was sort of implying fighting series, what with most fighting series being shonen as far as I know, but I didn't feel that the writing was particularly strong, either, and I suppose I've come to associate bad writing in anime with shonen, especially in this case because the Fate series has much to do with fighting. I was only referring to one or two episodes, but I saw a boring, formulaic fighting series topped off with a lousy dub.

Madoka was okay, but nowhere near as good as Saya no Uta.

Arguable. Course, you know that I, of all people, would argue this.

Madoka was cool in some of the fights, like the last one with the battleship and everything.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

Hmmm, everest, first the anime was a subpar adaptation, second, the start of the story is slow. and I should continue this elsewhere.

But it has plenty of bad points as well.  More regrettably though, it had a good concept and an extremely talented staff and blew it on what ultimately amounted to a Nanoha clone except with more Shinbo.  Which would have been perfectly acceptable, and indeed quite entertaining, if not for the fact that it was constantly being hailed as the next Evangelion.  It's true that the only reason I have such a strong negative opinion of it is because every other person seems to have such a strong positive opinion of it but in this case it really doesn't matter.  Since even if it weren't popular, I really doubt that it would have given me much faith in Urobuchi's writing ability, and I still probably wouldn't be terribly excited about Fate/Zero, since his involvement in it seems like it was considered to be fairly significant/heavily marketed/etc.

  • You can change. You can.

...such as? I mean, so far, and to be honest, all of your complaints have been basically "It's not good enough." and "It's overrated". Hell, you even point out wh the arguments following that sentence don't matter.

Also, a show being a clone or unoriginal is not a con or a pro unless the show intends to be original in some shape or form. And I'm sure that a show that is deliberately borrowing from various and different animus is not exactly claiming to be the most original thing ever.

Those aren't exactly big arguments there.

  • He who laments and can't let go of the past is forever doomed to solitude.

Fate/Zero bears the markings of an Urobuchi work in being a cynical show where many people die. But that means nothing when the book it is based on is a prequel to a series that starts by saying these people died and the consequences of those deaths put the plot in motion.

    >watching Madoka for the fights

. . . Okay, that fight was pretty cool, I'll grant, but the fights weren't really supposed to be the selling point of the series.

I have a feeling that wasn't what you meant (or at least, I really hope that that's not what you meant), but it seems like something out of left field.

  • No, but they were about the only parts I enjoyed from it. And the last couple episodes, I suppose.

  • Has friends besides tanks now

    :<

Ah, who am I kidding, I practically live off of depressing fiction, so of course I would defend the entirety of the series.

  • You can change. You can.

I don't think the fights weren't exactly that unimportant, everest. I mean, the series was short for a reason, and it was to get better looking animation.

    Raping Sayaka notwithstanding, of course

  • Personally, I partake in fiction for escapism and cool/funny stuff. Not really sure why I watched Madoka, I guess just because it was the cool thing to do at the time. But yeah, the fights were all right.

    Katawa Shoujo was pretty heart-warming.
