I tried to play Katawa Shoujo...

I'm not sure why but the wording of this irks me.
Well, I can't say that it "is" a dating sim because it has other stuff, but part of the game is a dating sim.
I DID GET BETTER, SHYEPARD
I GOT YOUU
Also...
While people certainly can pretend whatever they want without the aid of a game, it's pretty clear that people still want something to base their fantasies on, or else porn in general wouldn't be popular. Dunno exactly what you mean by "they seem pretty limited" but... the purpose of all the clicking is that having a lengthy story actually gives the reader time to become emotionally invested in it and develop an attachment to the characters, which is kind of important when the goal is to, you know, get the reader to be emotionally attached to your characters.
...People get attached to those things?
People went to student counselors sobbing when the seventh Harry Potter book came out because they were worried he was going to die. So yes.
Bob, can you honestly say you've never read a story in which you gave a shit about any of the characters?
See, the problem here is that you're dismissing the entire medium as an excuse for porn. Sadly, that's true of far too many VNs, but not all of them.
^^^...Please, deer god please, tell me you are joking.
^^lolz, love Samara's face
^I've grown attached, but not that attached, and not for something that was obviously just wank material, pornographic or not (because even if it isn't, most of the people playing it are probably still going to wank to it).
See, KS isn't just wank material. I can't stand most dating sims, because, well, a lot of them are, but KS...no, I don't feel that that's the case.
You could be forgiven for thinking it is, since the guy who thought up the concept was obviously going for a parody of the wank material ones, but the devteam wasn't.
I should mention that most of the time is not just a matter of attachment, but a matter of relatability. Especially (I'm guessing here) in the case Malk just brought up here.
Especially in the case of Harry Potter it's a matter of growing up with him. I'm sure many people began to see him as a friend they wish they could have. I don't see that as a 'silly' or 'pathetic' unless it affects their personal life and even then it should only inspire worry for their well-being.
On the subject of dating sims, I mean fuck look at waifu phenomenon. Sure, you could create a fantasy woman but something not completely known will always be more interesting.
I never saw Harry as being friend potential, especially after the fifth book. He turned into a belligerent, leaky douchenozzle.
You didn't, but other people did.
Speaking from experience, yes, very much.
Strange people.
But whatever. I have a really strong buffer between what I see as real and what I don't see as real. It takes something powerful (Like Seymour from Futurama) to make me genuinely care about something I know is fictional.
^ Whoever says they didn't feel anything after Jurassic Bark is a horrible liar.

I also cried at the endings to "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings," "The Sting," "Leela's Homeworld" and "Lethal Inspection."
I don't know what it is about them, but it gets to me.
Well, "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" was going to be the finale, so there's that. And the ending was a very touching one at that.
I liked the music.
Also, the Doctor Who episode "The Girl Who Waited." When Amy was talking about why she loved Rory, and how he became the most beautiful person she'd ever met, I... I got it. It actually made me cry. There were tears.
I'm getting teary just thinking about it. Damn. That doesn't usually happen.
