MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
so recommend me some books, bitches.

To help with advice, here's contemporary stuff I like.

The works of Simon R. Green
The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks
The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Most of the things by Neil Gaiman
A lot by William Gibson

Even if it doesn't follow recommend me stuff you think is awesome.

Also, general book talk I guess since we've been lacking one.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
^^Been mostly getting pap and public domain stuff. Also, I didn't care much for No Country For Old Men. The novel anyhow.

Conductor: I've read Mort, The Color Of Magic, and The Light Fantastic. Are there any other must-reads? Is that one with the girl with magic powers any good for example?

    @Malk

Guards! Guards! Is considered one of the best, along with the rest of the City Watch books.

If you're talking about Equal Rites, it's a decent book, but Granny Weatherwax's personality is a bit different from her latter characterization. Speaking of Granny, the witches books are good, too.

Really, you can't really go wrong with Discworld. Pick a storyline that looks interesting and stick with it.

Is there perchance a helpful chart to help me choose?

Well, there's  this, but it's a bit out of date and thus missing a couple of books.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Thief of Time is also an excellent one, as is The Truth.

MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I ended up getting Sourcery because... well, I like wizards.

Also, on the subject of what I like. I like fantasy novels, but I'm really not fond of the 'people sitting around talking about politics' variation which is why I'm so hesitant to pick up A Song of Fire and Ice. I like sci-fi, but usually more of the Future Fantasy variation though I've liked slightly harder stuff like Beowulf Shafer and other Larry Niven stuff and I dig the hell out of Philip K. Dick.

I'm also a big one on pulp noir, which is how my love for the Dresden Files started.

My 'older' tastes are more varied, I guess.

    That's a decent one, I guess.

Most novels pre-Guards! Guards! are considered to be inferior to the later books. Still good, though.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I'll keep that in mind for later. I managed to find them for about $5 so I might get a lot more in the future.
  • probably human
There are also quite a lot of things in the earlier books that end up being retconned, just as a warning.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
...am I going into Star Trek/comic book levels of retconning here?

Not that it will stop me but a warning would be nice.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Retconning in the Discworld isn't like retconning in our world. It works on narrativium, so those retcons were always in place, even if they weren't. Or something.
  • probably human
    @Malk

They're mostly minor, as far as I can remember, with the exception of Death being evil in the first book.

The retconning is explained/handwaved, at least.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I don't remember Death being evil... just rather callous.
  • He definitely was a different character in the first 2 books, though.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I would barely call him a character at that point.
  • probably human
He actively killed people for no apparent reason, I'd call that evil.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Maybe I'm misremembering the novel (It's been a good six years) but I remember him just being regarded as kind of a force of nature and he just happened to be there when bad shit happened.
